To me the best part of this song is the ending. The chords played sound so good with the horn section and back up singers and keith's improvised vocals. all versions are good; live and Steel Wheels. I could just keep listeing to that ending part over and over again. Its very soothing and uplifting at the same time.
Simply love this song...When it was played in Horsens last year they had to restart it because Keith got the intro wrong and after a couple of comments from a smiling Ronnie, he laughingly said 'sorry 'bout that' and played a really strong version.

Almost .. the third line is "Just getting off on misery"

not following here, G man, where does that line come in?

SLIPPING AWAY (M. Jagger/K. Richards)
Guess it's just another dream That's slipping away Each time I fall asleep It seems I'm just drifting away Just as you have touched my heart Babe I wake and we're apart Yeah and it's slipping away
Here comes just another day That's drifting away Every time I draw a breath It's dying away First the sun and then the moon One of them will be around soon Slipping away Slipping away
Drifting away Slipping away
Just as you have touched my heart I wake up babe and we're apart It seems we're slipping away Slipping away Slipping away
All I want is ecstasy But I ain't getting much Just getting off on misery It seems I've lost my touch
Well it's just another song But it's slipping away We we didn't sing it long 'Cos it's fading away First the sun and then the moon One of them will be round soon Slipping away Slipping away Slipping away

I remember back in '89 how some of us thought that this might indeed be their swan song, and what a graceful way for the Stones to bow out after 25+ years. Time has proved otherwise, of course.
Do you realize that, if (God forbid) one of the band passed into the great beyond, their swan song would be "Infamy"? Not the coda I'd want to put on the career of the greatest rock and roll band the world has ever known!!

I totally agree with you. Really love this song, especially the bridge and the end part. Sometimes I just play that part over and over again. I think it's the best ballad he did with the stones. Can't say it's his best ever 'cause tracks like Make No Mistake, Locked Away and Demon are also great. There are also some great unreleased ballads which he did with the stones, such as, Treat Me Like A Fool and We Had it All.

Yeah, bad thoughts Drew. Infamy, despite it's dreadful pun, has a lovely groove to it but the lyrics are empty and bland. Slipping Away is a majestic, moving song.

Yes....the fact that for four years the last NEW studio song they released was "Anyway You look At It", which is far worse. Mind you, it was succeeded by "Losing My Touch", which would also have been an inglorious and ironic finale.
i wish i could get into this song as much as you guys, especially since he's played it so much one the licks tour. the music doesn't do much for me at all.
now- thru and thru, that's a song that gets me going, especially the transition. when i first heard it at the wiltern, i was so excited that i said out loud "that was awesome!" to no one in particular during the quiet part between songs. keith heard me (i was front row) and thanked me via the microphone. i wish he'd play it more.

Agreed. And I daresay the same is true for "We Don't Wanna Go Home", which I suppose is their most recent studio output (along with the excellent "Under the Radar").
