Cover versions you prefer to the originals

It's often notoriously hard to better the original version of a song (or so they say) so what version of what song do you like in preference to the original.

Mine has to be Donnie Elbert's version of I Can't Help Myself which i find infinitely preferable to the original by the Four Tops.

I just think it's unfortunate it's almost impossible to get hold of in CD form (officially) in the UK. It would be appreciated if anyone knows anything to the contrary.

Like a Rolling Stones by the Stones, better than Bob Dylan. Stones' 69 version of Carol by Chuck Berry.

dare I say that the stones Mr. Pitiful is better than Otis'? I just like it more. The notes in it are slightly different to my ears and it just sounds more pleasing to me.

Joe Cocker has done this many times. A Little Help From My Friends, Feelin' Alright, Darling Be Home Soon, to name a few.

smile: but that is the original! it's not a cover unless someone else recorded it first.
i'll gladly add the X-Pensive Winos rendition of it to the list, though - that was hot!

One of Us

The original from Joan Osborne is horrible.
But check out the cover from Prince... brilliant.

How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

Although the Bee Gees original is good, the Al Green cover is the definite one.

Of course you're right. As you know, I was just thinking about the lennon/mccartney credits. BUT, the Stones' version is better than Beatles'.

Time is on my side better by the Stones than by Irma Thomas?? NO WAY!

Harlem Shuffle, though, I think tops the original.
Rare gem: Syl Johnson blows the Beatles away on Come Together
Irma Thomas raises An Peebles' "Needed Somebody" quite a few steps on her album "The New Rules", Rounder, 1999.

And don't forget Jimi Hendrix' killer version of "Killing Floor" at Monterrey.

A lot of Berry covers are better than the originals. I also prefer some of the Byrds versions of Dylan songs.

To the Worst - Whilist I really like the Who's live rendition of Shakin' All Over, no way is it better than the Johnny Kid and the Pirates original. Imo, its the greatest early Britsh rock 'n' roll record.

The Stones version of Not Fade Away leaves the Buddy Holly original in the dust.

NRBQ did Johhny Cash's Get Rhythm...and when somebody played it for Johnny in the 80's, he started doing it with their arrangement!

I love Otis Redding's original version of Respect, but at the Monterey Pop Festival he said that Aretha "took this song from me." Overplayed or not, hers is the definitive version.

To the guy that prefered the Clash take on I Fought the Law--listen to the Bobby Fuller Four version again. In a 1978 Creem magazine interview Lou Reed talked about the HUGE influence that record had on the sound of the Velvet Underground.

And while the Stones did a great job of bashing away on Just My Imagination, how could anyone prefer that to the Norman Whitfield-produced perfection of the Temptations original? That reminds me of the time they did an informal poll on the radio asking listeners which version of I Heard It Through the Grapvine they liked better--Marvin Gaye or Creedence. Because it was a rock station, the Creedence version won! One listener said he liked it better because it had "more guitar." Go figure.
