Chalie Watts drum battle

I don't think this clip has been posted before (probably wrong). It;s Charlie, Jack Parnell and another drummer who's name escapes me, performing a three way drum solo on the Cleo lane show circa 1976 - a very rare clip of Charlie soloing in anger.

What a great clip!! What a sport Charlie was to do such a thing (even if it is evidence of his disliking of drum solos!)... Thanks for sharing this one.

Great clip! When was this shot? It looks like '80, with the short hair and the maple drum kit.

'with ssoul' - I am sure it is Jack Parnell on this clip (1950's English band leader) - I think the other drummer is Louis Belson, (who starts the solo). Kenny clarke is black, so with respect, it really can't be him.

Mathijs - I think Charlie started using the maple Gretsch kit in 1980. The 'chinese' cymbal also gives a clue about the date of this clip - it was first heared on 'Some Girls'. So it must be post '78.

I actually remember watching this clip at the time, (but can't be specific about the year). Cleo Lane sang a song which introduced each drummer in turn - Charlie played a very basic 4/4 beat while the other guys rumbled round their drums at a 100 miles per hour when it was their turn. Then the thing took off.
I never thought I would see this again - so many thanks to the original poster.

Found this Jack Parnell pic at this website [www.transdiffusion.org] It says it's circa 1975

I guess one of the others could indeed be Jack Parnell

Did Charlie solo more than those few secondes during the song?

The first pictures of the maple Gretsch are from Pathe Marconi, summer 1977. Charlie used this kit on the 1978 tour, and added the China symbol for Emotional Resque in Nassau, 1979. This set-up is what I consider the best ever Charlie Watts kit.

Mathijs - with respect, the china cymbal is first heared on the track 'Some Girls' - it's low trashy sound is very distinctive in the first couple of bars into the song. I agree by 'Emotional Rescue' the China cymbal was used much more. In those days Charlie used a huge 20" Zildjian China with a bigger, more explosive sound than he gets today from the Italian 'Ufip' 18" china.

You might find the link here quite interesting. It's an article written by Richard King - the supplier of Charlies second maple kit. He talks about how Charlie came to get his first original Gretsch maple set.

What do you think of the actual solo from a muscial point of view? I think it's good considering he's not used to playing solos live. The groove, the power, the musical idea and the technical demonstration. It was all there.

Checked my longer version of the song again. Cleo Laine sings in the
first part and introduces all three drummers in her lyrics.
They are CW, Jack Parnell and Kenny Claire (not Clarke).

That is oh so cool. An interviewer needs to ask Mr. Watts about this. I can only imagine his response, if he remembers it at all (he was in his drug phase in the early 80s).
