i enjoyed it! i don't do ratings, since it depends what you're looking for.
it's entertaining, neither a heavy-duty "serious read" nor sensationalized trash.
as i've mentioned on another thread somewhere, the chronology goes south sometimes, but ...
well, that gives us trainspotterly types something to do. :E

I'm about a third of the way through it and I'm enjoying it so far.

It is quite an easy read and has no great revelations so far but it is entertaining. It seems quite honest as well. I think if you didn't know who ronnie was and read this book, that you would warm to him quite quickly.

I'll give it 8 out of 10. Worth buying.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

As a biography 8 out of 10, as a piece of music history 5 out of 10. Some dates confused and the thin coverage of the Faces/Rod.

i keep wanting to say this ... so i will: it's also very nicely produced volume -
i mean it's physically pleasant. which is a nice quality for an affordable book.

I agree, Its the same with his website and artwork on CD's. Good eye for layout...

I just finished it today and it's a really good read.
Somehow it seems to me that he focuses a bit too much on drug stories (we did so and so many kgs of cocaine, so many dirty joints, this and that guy came and got stoned, etc.) instead of writing some more interesting things about his music. But it's still a really cool read.

yeah, i would have liked more about the music too, and his creative processes and that sort of thing,
but it never surprises me anymore when musicians aren't very verbally articulate about music.
that's why they make records :E

"There's nothing more boring than a musician talking about music"

Well, I hope that he at least releases some of those gems that must be in his vaults from The Wick and all his other houses where all the musicians gathered to jam...

Something else that is still on my mind as I have just finished reading is this sentence:

"Mick was growing more and more concerned about my drinking and the coke I was doing and although I didn't know it at the time, I came close to being left out of the Forty Licks tour." (page 301)

When I think back, there were rumors about that before the Licks tour, right? I can't really remember anymore.

I haven't read it yet...but the exerpts published are all designed to sensationalize and tiltilate about guns. booze, drugs, knives, and all sorts of debauchery...........certainly not passing any judgement......just........ aren't we all sort of onto other, more important things by now??

>> i guess your're not a musician <<

Erik's quoting Mr Charles Watts, if i'm not mistaken.

being musical and being verbally articulate about music are totally different gifts,
and not too many people have both. and i reckon details about the music might be considered
a pretty "specialized" subject, better left for Guitarist Magazine interviews or something like that.
Ronnie's fame stretches way beyond his fields of specialization, after all ...

>> I haven't read it yet...but the exerpts ... <<

i wouldn't judge it on the basis of the excerpts

Eh, quotes mean that somebody said it once. And Charlie Watts said this.

.explicity said......no judgement....but from what I have read....it doesn't sound to interesting.

smile: ohh sorry - "doesn't sound too interesting" sounds like a judgement to me,
but ... have it your way! :E what i meant is that it reads differently than the excerpts do -
it's not sensationalistic, nor is it heavily insightful/reflective - it's a good entertaining read.

....honestly no judgement.....it hasn't peaked my interest yet........perhaps when I get to the book store it will......but so far it just hasn't......I'm actually thinking it's time to re read some Harry Potter and especially regarding Dumbledore.

Harry Potter book 8, where he kicks his cocaine habit with Hermione and Ron's support is a very entertaining read I believe.

Have just tracked Ronnie's book down in Waterstones, no copies in the local Borders. Does this mean Borders didn't bother to stock it, or maybe they had a huge rush on it and they sold out? winking smiley

For those who have read this one and the Mclagan "all the rage": Is Ronnies similar to all the rage?
I really enjoyed Maclagan book!

I'm not sure anyone's words can adequately capture, characterize or describe any music, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try...

....then I'm buying it. Count me in.........and Lorenz, nothing makes me want to buy this book more than the thought of reading about Ronnie's druggie escapades. Seriously, I can't wait.

Lukester, I enjoyed reading about that too. Those are sure stories worth telling and very entertaining. But somehow it also shows how many troubles he got himself into....
And everytime he mentions jamming with someone or doing recordings I wish he would have gone more into detail winking smiley

That's a good point, Lorenz. I too would like to read about his thoughts and feelings regarding the jammings and recording sessions.

Not too many startling revelations, easy to read, enjoyable, a few basic errors by the ghost writer!

I've read it. It reminded me of Brian Wilson's autobiography, in that a lot of the information reads like Woodie just looked himself up on the internet and told his ghostwriter the stories he'd read about himself.
