OT. things to do, when in London
Posted by: Promoman ()
Date: October 9, 2007 01:46

On Oct 20th I'll do a two day visit of London as a tourist with my friend (Beatle fan she is) and two kids (11 and 13).
I could do with suggestions of Stones (or Beatles) related sites or sights. Also suggestions of suitable clubs or gigs would be nice. Is the Marquee still open?

Sticky Fingers is always a fun, touristy thing to do. I would ditch the kids and hit some PUBS!

The famous Edith Grove flat is at 102 Edith Grove.
Not much to look at really. Still residential.

Must walk across Abbey Road, take the tube to Saint John's Wood Station, it's less than a five minute walk. If you make it to Liverpool, the Casbah is an absolute must. Be careful, if someone tells you someplace is a 15 minute walk, expect it will take 1 hr. 15 min. to get there.

Try some Cod & Chips or Cod & Vegtables or Cod & Salad...

Would combine a few of these. Sticky Fingers on Kensington High Street is very close to Earl's Court Road which becomes Edith Grove. Edith Grove ends up at Cheyne Walk, from which you can toot around the corner to King's Road, Chelsea, where the drugstore used to be. Not a bad walk.

Take one of the Beatles tours around London-- There is a guy who meets everyone
near Oxford Street and Tottenham and takes you for a 90 walk around Beatles-related stuff -- Abbey Road, Mccartneys' Soho offices, Apple on Saville Row, the Indica Gallery, etc--

Pretty fun stuff

just go to the science museum at south kensington, its free and enjoyable.

or alternatively get a carry out and sit on the tube for a couple of hours to unwind.

...Hop on the EUROSTAR (Chunnel High Speed Train) and zoom over to Paris.... just kidding (unless you can add a few more days) The Beatles stuff and Sticky Fingers are the most interesting things to see IMHO.......

Pub food and drinks. Fish'n'ships, pint of bitter. Sticky fingers. Repeat. Plus there are countless places to go in Stones history from Mason's Yard to Primrose Hill. Hyde Park. And so on. Their home ground you know.

I've heard the Pilot Inn is a good pub, but can get very crowded when there are concerts on at the nearby O2...lol.

Pilot Inn is only worth visiting if you are in the O2 area - for a show. Personally I would take any pub in London. Some are greater than others. The less tourists the better. The worst one is probably Swan on Bayswater road. One of my favorites are Pride of Paddington just outside the Paddington station, but any pub would be fine actually. As British as it gets.

Yes, the pub is a great symbol of Britain, but finding British beer can be a bit more challenging.

Lotta good ideas above.

Definitely hit one of the better fish and chips spots and also a good Indian restaurant. Perhaps read TIMEOUT for some ideas on this and other suggestions generally.

Leischester square for some movies. Helter Skelter book store at 4 Denmark Street - [www.helterskelterbooks.com] - for great selections of Stones books - and also the actual location of Regent Sound Studio - used by the Stones in the 60's. Get one of those 60's rock guides. There's so many great places to visit. And Richmond Station of course. Nothing left of the Station Hotel except a fancy sort of cafe but get the feel of where it all started, as they came out of the station building, it's all the same 44+ years ago.

Like British beer, finding good fish and chips can be a bit elusive.

Check out tripadvisor.com for loads of helpful advice.

Speaking of museums etc, this is a lesser known one. but if you're interested in architecture, you absolutely cannot afford to miss it. It's 100 percent free, and VERY well worth a visit.

True. 9 out of 10 fish'n'ships meals are just medium. My favorite f&s store near Victoria station turned into more commercial chain pub food unfortunately. If anyone know the best f&s pub in central London then please let me know. PS. Pilot Inn was just average for f&s.

PS. Best chinese restaurant in London is Mandarine House in Queensway. Highly recommended, close to Bayswater road, just one block or so off, other side of Queensway vs. the tube station, towards Lancaster Gate. Be there before 7:30pm or expect queues. Also Queensway is worth a visit any time late evenings, the street that close late, real late, and for nornmal people not posh shopping like the central streets. Also, check out Bayswater Road Sunday morning for great art, some times also Stones art, and Hyde Park Speakers Corner Sunday before noon next to Marble Arch for great weired speaches and arguments about life, God, heaven, earth or anything that is on or off topic... Yes... I just love London!

Nature hates a vacuum Gazza. You left London, someone has to fill the void! ;-)

BTW - saw an interesting T-shirt in New York, itemized 22 discrete uses for the F-word. Oddly, you weren't mentioned. Leaves some room for the Rocks Off crowd to get creative on your next birthday! (I'm here if they want any help... heh heh!)

Best Fish & Chips?

A place called Fish & Chips on Berwick Street in Soho.
Absolutely the best...GIANT pieces of cod. Also mushy peas, onion gravy, baked beans, pies, sausages, etc.
Nothing fancy about this place...the food speaks for itself.

And yet again on the subject of museums, there's a whole cluster of them at South Kensington, not only the Science museum but also the Natural History and the Victoria & Albert. Also in town at the moment is an exhibition of China's First Emperor's Terracotta Army. This is the first time any of it has been exhibited outside of China. You need to book, here's the link:

sadly BV, to my eternal disgust , the bookshop, is no more.
It shut approx 2 years ago.
They still trade on-line... but its not the same. sad smiley

If you do make it as far as Richmond, the Station Hotel isn't "Edwards" any more. It's the place opposite the station painted brown and is now called "The Bull". The new owners (if there are new owners) don't seem any more aware of its history than the previous lot.
