Meg is NO drummer! She's a chimp with sticks that occasionally hits the drum at the right time.

Well.....obviously Max Weinberg has written a book about drumming where he lists both Mr. Watts and Ringo as influences....but what does he know? ;-)

Quote Charlie:
"I don't really know. I know Max [Weinberg]. He did the best book on drummers written. I love it because he didn't give it to somebody else to write; he actually wrote it, which really knocked me out. He wrote some very nice things about me as well. He actually had me, all his influences-the one on Ringo's very good. They're actually little articles written by someone who knows drummers."

Has anyone seen (hear) Ringo playing live? I always see him playing with other drummers (-although I only hear one- see the last waltz or the concert of bangladesh) or with a lot of percusionits around. If he is alone, he only does plinka plinka. His son really knows how to play.

The late Paul Hester from Crowded House. He was a fantastic drummer.

Ringo was a hot commodity in Liverpool in 1963 and it wasn't because of his looks.

I've always wished I could tranport myself back to early 60's
and hear those guys play and know what I know now about playing drums...
I might have made some money! ....

Would have been fun to hear them play back then,
sure they've gotten better and would have been kinda raw back then,
but how cool!

Watch and listen to Ringo on The Last Waltz movie. He both looks like and sounds like he's never had a pair of drumsticks in his hands! Totally embarissing!

Phil Rudd and Bun E Carlos of Cheap Trick for sure.
phil rudd is just sooo ringo starr, which is good.
steve jordan but not clem burke, although he is a sensational drummer.
man i love about 162 drummers!!!!

If by "from the Charlie Watts school" you mean solid and unpretentious and supportive of the music rather than on top of it then Simon Kirke, (Free), is of the same school.

Must defend Ringo while I'm here too - he is a great drummer. Even Phil Collins - who is a damn good drummer - says so.

Actually Charlie was in the Fred Below school of drumming! While he isn't alive Fred Below always had that sound Charlie was able to replicate as well or better than anyone. It is an off beat thing that Charlie had down pat. Charlie helped take the Stones sound to the next level. This is why the Stones had always had such a wonderful tempo on blues, R and B, soul, and Berry numbers. Nobody did it better in England or anywhere for that matter IMHO. Fred Below and The Aces were one of the finest backing bands of all time. The Stones were wise and respectful to this sound and style over 45 years ago and it they still have it on a good night these days as well.

The other guy who had a similar style to my ears was Al Jackson Jr. from Booker T and the MGS. That Stax Volt sound. Al was so basic and understated, yet strong and carried the tempo as well as anyone I have ever heard. There was that snap in there that Charlie also has. This is the essence of what makes a great band swing.

And he definitely had that Charlie quality of giving a song just what it needs, even if it's not technically that complex. Things like Pineapple Head might not have the most complicated forms but to come up with something that so fits the song is quite an art.

So did Shel Talmy. Avory didn't drum on any of the early Kinks records. A guy called Bobby Graham did instead.

he did, actually. the initial pressings of the Love Me do single feature Ringo - see here for more - [en.wikipedia.org]. Andy White's drumming is on the later pressings which was also on the Please Please Me album and the US release of the single.

Paul played on a couple of songs on the White album because Ringo walked out of the band during the sessions (Back in the USSR./Dear prudence)

Paul

he played the drums and bass on it. Lennon did guitar and piano. the reason why the others didnt play was simple. Harrison was on holiday and Starr was filming.

I thought that quote was attributed to Lennon? - and apparently its totally apocryphal.

I always thought Andy White was on the single and Ringo was on the album version. Obvsiously I was mistaken. Confusing, because according to Andy Whites entry on Wikipedia, he plays on the b-side, PS I Love You

All the talk of Ringo and Charlie. Let's put it this way. If you had a band and had to pick Charlie or Ringo who would you take. The drummer from the greatest rock and roll band in the world or the drummer from a band who's bass player had to do his parts sometimes becasue he just wasn't good enough?

I suppose you take the drummer that fits the band?

Hence Mick Avory for the Kinks, Ringo for the Beatles and Mr. Watts for the Rolling Stones ;-)
