OT: Best Female Guitar Player

I don't know if you have had this thread before, but after watching some of my old blues DVDs and being totally impressed with watching and listening to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, I'd figure I would start this thread. Below is just a short example.

I would like to get your take on who the best female guitarist is or was.

I saw Bonnie Raitt at the Waikiki Shell last January and not only does she look like a member of ZZ Top...she plays guitar just like 'em!
She gets my vote.
Hendrix's sister was pretty damn good too.

The list MUST include Kaki King

I agree with the Bonnie Raitt mention, though ZZ Top do look different to her.

But I think Mary Cutrufello, though maybe not a household name, deserves a mention on this thread. Too bad she got dropped from Mercury Records after just one album, when that label got eaten up by Universal. By now, she's gone the indie route for releasing her albums. Feel free to google her if you like. She really rocks and is a good songwriter, too.

Nancy Wilson of Heart
Joan Jett & Lita Ford - Runaways and solo
Susan Tedeschi (sp.?) - her husband ain't bad either - Derek Trucks

Bonnie Raitt is great, especially on slide guitar.....but I don't get why someone would compare her to ZZ Top. She gets my vote.

Are they really good guitar players, or just your favorite singers playing a guitar?

Joni Mitchell did some terrific work especially with Jaco Pastorius ("Hejira" comes to mind); Pat Place played devilish slide with James Chance & Contortions. Char Vinnedge was way ahead of her time (1966-67) leading the Luv'd Ones ("Truth's Gotta Stand"), & around 1971 a forgotton lp, "Nitro Function" produced by Hendrix Band Of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox...Memphis Minnie, for sure...Sylvia Vanderpool (Mickey & Sylvia) did some nice Bo (who's on 'Love Is Strange) Diddley-esque guitar, but how could she compete with Mickey Baker? Bo of course always gave women musicians a place in his band.......Grace Slick, though hardly a technically accomplished guitarist, did some great, evocative contributions on several Airplane songs (tho more important as a pianist in the band)...I'm forgetting a lot, I'm sure, but it still seems like slim pickings compared to the boys' list

Jeff Beck had a female guitarist with him in the 90's named Jennifer (can't remember her last name but Batten or something to that effect) who could be described as a female version of a Beck or VanHalen.

Am unaware that Jimi Hendrix had a sister who was a fine guitar player?

Believe he, too, was unaware.

Bonnie is very good, and she's done a lot to turn the audience on to great blues songs and players.

Ellen McIlwaine is very good also.

Is Joan Jett REALLY good or ?

Anyone the very classy Jeff Becks asks to play has to be good.
