If I only could pick one album to listen to for the rest of my life, by any artist, this would be it. Easily the greatest record of all time, and runs a wide gamut of musical styles.
Can one think of a better soul tune than Let It Loose ? Or a better sexy, slinky, licking number than Rocks Off ? Or something that's more goovy than Dice ?
"I was was making love last night to a dancer friend of mine..."

OK. Let's assume the Stones hadn't been around before Exile and split the day it came out. Would it have been critically well recieved at the time ? Would it have been remembered...and would folks still be playing it today ?
Andrew Oldham getting the Stones that deal whereby Decca leased the music from them, rather than owning it outright, permitted the artists to decide what to record and how it should sound. that plus the phenomenon of self-sufficient artist/songwriters who played their own instruments and looked hot doin it revolutionized the whole music industry, at least for a beautiful and crucial and world-changing spell.
without that bizarre (for that time/place) clause in that record contract, which ALO says even he didn't understand the ramifications of at the time (well, who could?!) Exile and all these other albums y'all are naming would never have been recorded, let alone released/reviewed/well-or-badly received.
i know i know - i'm too literal-minded for this little "what-if" game, but the real history is so fascinating, and it changed so very much

Let It Bleed - what other album takes you from Hell (Gimme Shelter) to Heaven (YCAGWYW), has a handy listening instruction and comes decorated by St Delia!
I would pick "Big Hits" (High Tide and Green Grass).
1. "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadows?" 2. "Paint It, Black" 3. "It's All Over Now" 4. "The Last Time" 5. "Heart of Stone" 6. "Not Fade Away" 7. "Come On" 8. "Satisfaction" 9. "Get Off of My Cloud" 10. "As Tears Go By" 11. "19th Nervous Breakdown" 12. "Lady Jane" 13. "Time Is on My Side" 14. "Little Red Rooster"
