Has anyone a strong opinion on Ronnie Wood's history in the band. Do you think he has improved or hindered or kept them the same?

I love Woody as a character but I am 100% positive he is in the band as a pal/ally/victim/bully material for Keith. Woody has always clearly worshiped Keith and that's to his advantage especially when the 1980's cold war with Jagger was at it's most savage.Any guitar players out there? surely Woody cannot be rated as a great player?

Is it just coincidence that arguably the Stones have not made a classic album since MIck Taylor left? ( I suppose there's an argument for some girls and Tattoo you.) But live, Ron Wood really ranges from not bad to awful.
Listen to the live bootlegs from the Mick Taylor era... now that's a great player!

I'm positive that if Taylor had stayed or been replaced by someone with the melodic feel of Clapton, Dave Gilmour, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck etc, etc over the top of Keith's chopping riffs the Stones would still be a ground breaking band.
Here is an interesting link below and unless my eyesight is failing, Ron Wood id not even on it.

Don't get me wrong, I love woody. He is an out an out Rolling Stone and great value but music wise he has had the luckiest career of any guitarist!

Listen to the MIck Taylor live bootlegs and you have a blistering, searing but melodic guitar over the top of a nailed down riff not this 'ancient art of weaving' bit, which is a cop out in my view.Every time I see a photo of Ron Wood, I just imagine him thinking 'I know, I don't know how I got here either.'

Does anyone actually think the Rolling Stones became a stronger live band since the exit of Taylor and the Entry of Wood or like me that he got the the job because he and Keith's shared interests in the lifestyle 'other' pursuits.

If you have a decent bootleg collection play a Taylor one then a Wood one.... there's no comparison!

P.S. Quote from Charlie watts last Autumn " Mick Taylor was the best musician the Stones ever had"

He carried the band this summer. Has had his own issues but rose to the occasion in 2007 and deserves a big thank you!

Classic albums notwithstanding - and I do believe they've done a few with Ronnie Wood - I don't believe the Stones would have existed today without Ronnie Wood.

I do not think his role as a go-between in the conflict(s) between Jagger and Richards can be overestimated

for crying in the dust, here we go again ... Ronnie Wood is a 100% thoroughbred Rolling Stone.
yes the Stones have made a bunch of great albums since Ronnie joined them,
and yes they've stayed right at the top as a performing band all this time -
and obviously Ronnie's talents and his personality play a big part in that.
in a band, everyone's personality plays a part; that's inherent to the concept of a band,
not something to brush off in shallow "what if" scenarios.
Ronnie's great & graceful spirit in about the hardest gig in the business is a huge gift to this planet.

Ron Wood is the man, right?
This summer he's been nothing short of amazing!
As many say, Mick Taylor might be a better guitar player, but Ron Wood is by far a better Rolling Stone.

Wonder how many MT fanatics were dreading me getting ahold of this one?

Its no secret that I put Ronald on a very high pedistal. What in the Hell do you mean the Stones havn't made a classic album since MT decided to rudely walk out on the Stones? Total bullshit.Who are you to decide whats classic anyway? Do you really, REALLY, think that the albums from that time period would not have been made if MT were not around?Did Mick and Keith say "We have to do a classic album because Mick Taylor is a Stone now, and we can save the crap for when Ronnie is in the band"?

MT was an ok player, but he was boring as hell on stage. Woody is by far better in all places than MT.

The bottom line is that Ronnie knew a good thing when he saw it. I think the Rolling Stones are lucky to have Ronnie Wood in the band. He is a great guy, and it shows. Yes he worships Keith Richards, so do I and lots of other folks on this board. He is where most of us would kill to be. He deserves to be where he is.

As far as guitar playing, I can name countless solos and riffs from Woody that I love.Ever hear of a band called The Faces? Check them out, because Woody kicked major ass.I don't care how many bootlegs you have of MT, Ronnie is still the better man for the job. He has been playing with the Stones since 1975, always been cool, alway been faithful, and has not gained a pound.

I noticed so far, no one has agreed with you. Just wait, Open-MLC will be up soon and you'll have someone to play with.

Re: WOODY

Ronnie's a king! He has contributed musically and otherwise in a way that nobody could even dream of when he first joined. This year he has been totally amazing, and he deserves the credit. Even Keith commented on Ronnie's brilliant work. "I wanna do "You Got The silver", because Ronnie plays it so beautifully"."
And it's no secret that Ronnie's diplomatic skills actually kept the band together during the ugly 80's, when those two men up front were not on speaking terms... So thank you to Ronnie, from the bottom of my heart. And I hope I have a lot of people with me on this one.
I really feel it's no use in discussing "what if Taylor had stayed on". He didn't. And I think Ronnie's a much better Rolling Stone than Taylor would ever have become. Ronnie's a better team player. And a nicer guy.

in the long run, ronnie has been with the band for 30yrs and managed to keep some semblance of sanity...regardless of his playing or stage antics that really must count for something...i really don't think that any of the afore mentioned players could have or would have stuck around for that long...

When sober and focused he is one of the best all around guitarists period.

Ronnie in his hay day was better then all the others including Keith IMO.

Ron Wood was/is a perfect fit in the band. Tho not the musician Taylor was, they have certainly made some good records since he's been a member. Not a hindrance at all; an assett!

Ron Wood has been marginalized somewhat, moreso post Steel Wheels, but at least for the first 15 years he clearly helped influence the band's direction...Can't imagine Mick T on "Some Girls" or "Emotional Rescue", Ron's playing is more barbed, dirty, and his conception in the RS is more musically self-effacing, focused on the band sound. MT's more baroque (not on Exile tho). I dig them both, but Ron also seems to have brought a funk/soul influence i.e. "Hey Negrita", "Everything Is Turning To Gold", "Aint No Use Crying". I also prefer Wood's bass playing. Both these guys are very individual slide players...The primary issue has more to do w/ J/R's songwriting and how it's changed across the years.

Just Play "That's All You Need", "When The Whip Comes Down (Live)" (from Sucking in the 70s), "Down In The Hole", "Breathe On Me" (Now Look version), "Far East Man", "You're My Girl", "Mona The Blues", Faces' "Love In Vain" or "I'd Rather Go Blind" (both from the box), the '95 "Gimmie Shelter", or even the Birds' compilation. Mick Taylor is technically extremely proficient, a superbly gifted blues-based player who made extraordinary contributions to the Stones' albums, but Wood is easily as distinctive a stylist as a guitar player, and a gifted collaborator, songwriter, and guiding force in 43 years' worth of great British bands, notwithstanding his sometimes awkward position in the Stones and (addiction related) off nights.
