Rolling Stones: biggest gigs
Posted by: RollingStonesFan ()
Date: September 21, 2007 14:04

#1: Rio de Janeiro, 2006 - ~ 1.300.000
#2: Hyde Park, 1969 - 500.000
#3: Toronto, 2003 - 450.000
#4: Altamont, 1969 - 300.000
#5: Knebworth, 1976 - 120.000

Did I miss some +100.000 shows?

I think those are the top 5, I think they may have played to over a 100.000 in Prauge in 1990

100,000+ Philadelphia 1978 and 1981

The JFK shows in Philly were around 90,000 each

150,000 at Roundhay Park, leeds on 25th July 1982

theres no accurate figure for Rio, Hyde Park and Altamont as all were free shows, although Hyde Park was probably around 250-300,000 with Altamont possibly being in excess of 400,000

Knebworth was around 200,000 I think, so the top 5 in order are probably

1) Rio 2) and 3) Toronto or Altamont 4) Hyde Park 5) Knebworth

This site by Jens Backlund makes interesting reading if you';re into those type of statistics, although it hasnt been updated since 2001

Nürnberg 1998 @ Zeppelinfeld 100.000 people

(1st Euro Date for Bridges To Babylon Tour)

btw. this was for me the biggest concert, which I've seen until now. Jonny Lang was the opening-act (very good).

The figures quoted on those two links are official sales.

Rio 1995 had two shows with a total of 141,053 - so just over 70,500 per show on average - [www.abo.fi]

Nuremburg 1998 was a 91,590 sell out

There were many +85.000 gigs during the 90ies in Germany.

Nürnberg, Leipzig, Hamburg 1998
Stuttgart 1999
...

No no. It´s not true.
In the first concert, 02 feb - 70.000 people
In the second concert, 04 feb - 90.000 people
total in Rio 1995 - 160.000 people

In São Paulo - 1995
3 concerts, 50.00 people each concert.

I am brazilian. And I see these concerts.

Odd that the 2nd show outsold the first, then - plus odd that he hasnt listed the 90,000 attendance in his list of top attendances (Presumably he just had the combined figure and just averaged them)

I was at Hyde Park. Attendance was noted at "approximately 250,000" Seemed incredible at the time...especially for a rock band. Believe it was the biggest gathering ever at Hyde Park up until that date.

130.000 PEOPLE IN PRAGUE WITH THE VOODOO LOUNGE TOUR 1995

Re: Rolling Stones: biggest gigs

Mickschix: I was outside listening to the show for a while as a 15 yr old. I had to wait till '78 to see them at the Stadium.

There were tons of people outside listening in '75.

Does this thread count paid attendance? If that's the case I would think Toronto SARS wins?

SARS was the biggest one-day ticketed concert attendance EVER. By anyone.

Thanks Gazza. Always a definitive answer.

Though the Stones were not their best, best that day, they were still good, and it was a great event. Huge crowd, but extremely peaceful and easy going.

Toronto and it's people regularly impress me.

And they didn't sell more than 10 or 15.000 tickets for the planned gig in 2006 before they cancelled it!

Yes. It was a massive crowd. With a big big beer truck
in the middle of the crowd. One of the largest crowds
I have been with before the SarsStock show.

Hockenheim had some big crowds as well.
They oversold the venue I am sure.
Around 100,000 real people (not everyone accounted for).

I would like them to do more big crowds.
Ticket at 10 dollars and one million people.
That's what I call an event!

Wasn't Berlin '90 gigantic, what with the Wall having just gone down a few months before?
