Through the Lonely Nights

If I remember right, I read this song was the B side of the song Its Only Rock and Roll. If you are fan of the album Its Only Rock and Roll, which I am, you are probably a fan of the two ballads on it... Til the Next Time We Say Goodbye and If You Really Want to Be My Friend. If Through the Lonely Nights made it on the IORR album, it would have been a third strong ballad on that album. This is a great song.

I actually think it sounds like a Goats Head Soup song though. I think its the waa-waa guitar that you hear a lot of on Goats Head Soup. Nights is actually a perfect mix of the sounds of those two back-to-back albums.

"You'll be studying history and you'll be down the gym. And I'll be down the pub, probably playing pool and drinking."

It was a GHS leftover. The original 45 lists The Glimmer Twins and Jimmy Miller as co-producers. Great song. Now if they'd just issue "Think I'm Going Mad" on CD...

Loved that song right from the start! Played it alot more than " It's Only Rock n Roll". I still have that single but I am glad it was included on Rarities. I bet there's a ton of material, unreleased, not ever heard, that we'd love to have. OPEN THE VAULTS PLEASE!

I like the expierence of a flip, it´s greater to hear it from the 45.On Rarities it´s just a "track".
Anyway, I don´t count it to high, I think it´s a little bit overrated because it was so long a rarity

It was indeed the B-Side of IORR in the UK, and what a fantastic song too!

Such a shame that we had to wait until Rarities to hear it in clear digital sound, and an even greater shame that the band never got round to performing it live.

As has been posted here before, Mick will open the vaults when the band has definitely stopped touring; it's an insurance policy for their old and multi-billion dollar old age.

The track is o.k., but clearly light weight. It's fun for us hardcore fans, but there's not a real reason to re-release it.

Great track, even after all those years. Great build up in the song. Should have been an album track. I refuse to buy rarities, so I'm glad I own the 7".

There was an article in Rolling Stone in mid-August 1973, listing the tracks that were slated for Goat's Head Soup. Here is how they were identified:

Silver Train
@#$%&
Hundred Years
Can You Hear the Music?
Through the Lonely Hours
Angie
Hide Your Love
Crisscross
Do Do Do Do
Dancing with Mr. D.

Whether some of the titles are incorrect due to sloppy reporting or due to a last-minute change in the lineup of the songs is anyone's guess. Interesting that the two ballads that were dropped into the middle of each side ("Coming Down Again" and "Winter") were not originally named. Those two songs kinda epitomize the feeling of that album for me.

Altough I'm always "at the brink of my chair" if you reply Mathijs I do agree with you this time

"at the brink of my chair" Dutch saying (op het puntje van mijn stoel)

Yes. Exactly right.

It's not bad...but it ain't worthy of all the praise it gets around here.

That´s why I fell in love with the Rolling Stones

and more than 30 years later I am so happy about it!

Great song - nice country feel and harmonies, but soulful at the same time.

"No Anchovies, Please"

Don't you consider it a " re-release" having put this song on Rarities, Mathijs? I guess fans must have influenced this choice to some degree.

<you are probably a fan of the two ballads on it>

The third is the best IMO: Time Waits For No One.

Didn't Jimmy Page contribute a guitar part to Through the Lonely Nights?

Liked it very much too, couldn't figure why they didn't put it on IORR. Better than that piece of crap short and curlies.

Another great B-Side from arguably the greatest B-Side exponents of them all.
