Just my imagination - best version?
Posted by: ravipuri ()

Hi

In the spread of your entire collection, in your opinion, what is the best performance of just my imagination? I am looking for something that is good as, if not better than the version on Still Life. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ravi

IMO it's Los Angeles Oct 9 1981, but plenty to choose from. You might wanna check out the '78 versions too

July 17 1982--Shattered In Europe bootleg
Totally smokes the cheesed-up, shortened Still Life version.

The versions featured on the "Handsome Girls" boot are awesome. Better than the 81 versions.

I love the part when Mick sings: "But in reality... SHE DOESN'T @#$%& KNOW ME!!!"

The Temptations - Just My Imagination ( Running Away With Me ) - Motown 1971....

Penned by Barrett Strong along with the GREAT Norman Whitfield who also produced
it...Led all the way by Eddie Kendricks on his final Temptations single before going solo ...CLASSIC

Over on Hot Stuff on this board you can download tons of stuff (Handsome Girls, fer sure). If ya can't find ask for it. Many (especially Urban Steel) can provide. You can be listening within minutes.

Hampton 1981 hands down the best with extended jam session of wailing guitars. A 10 minute version at that.

Giants Stadium 2006. - a very very good version. It's a pity they didn't play it more on ABB Tour.

er, this thread is about the "best version ever." not the most "mediocre." (let's be honest here . . . )

in '81 it was an absolute showstopper. nothing has approached it since.

Best versions are from the 1978 US Tour.

Exactly.

Hampton '81. Thanks to the great Ernie Watts and Bill giving tonal and melodic homogeneity the guitars really took off.

One of the Stones' greatest live moments. I love the '78 version as well but it's much closer to the SG-album version.

for me the BEST version would be from the Temptations :-)

The Temptations' original is sublime. But I loved the way The Stones punked it up. Check out the extended/unedited studio version on a Some Girls Outtake boot like Paris Pigalle, Girls, Pills & Powders, or the Sister Morphine version of said outtakes.

Oh, and there's the classic Prince bootleg version from 1988.

nikolai, thanks! for the info,
i've always liked the stones singing just my 'magination too -
i think it takes a certain amount of bravery to cover classic motown hits, and the stones sure know how to interpret them ... i guess their only motown cover that i've never liked much is "ain't too proud to beg" - for me it's a little too punked up and it ain't got that original "swing", but hey it's okay too :-)

I love this song, and love the album track. But I have a hard time seriously comparing it to the Temps original single - the lead vocal on the original soars waaayyy above the clouds.

On the other hand, I think that Stones come very close to trumping the Temps on "Ain't too proud to Beg."!

Agree. That is an amazing version. I listen to it a lot. The way Charlie plays and Mick's siging are perfect. Everybody is really! I very much wish they would play this more often. The Handsome Girls versions are also amazingly brilliant!

Compared to the original, the Stones made an own tune out of it!

I wouldn't say they made it their own. I think their/Jagger's intention was to take a lush romantic song and punk it up, like the Sex Pistols did with Substitute, What You Gonna Do and Stepping Stone.
