OT: The Scroll: 50th anniversary of Jack Kerouac's On the Road

Just a tribute to one of my all time favourite books.

Yesterday - Sep 5th - it was 50 years ago Jack Kerouac's novel, On the Road was first published.

I learnt a few days ago that the uncensored version of Kerouac's novel will be published (or is it already?) including 'deleted scenes' and the original names.

Take a look at Kerouac's original manuscript - the scroll: [www.npr.org]

The story behind On the Road: [www.npr.org]

BTW, those of you being able to watch Danish TV, DR2 will dedicate a whole evening on Sep 24th(I believe it was) to On the Road.

Yeah I can't possibly imagine I'll ever get tired of that one.

Looking forward to read the unedited version as well

Incredible book
There's also a CD "Jack Kerouac reads On The Road" - which also contains 5-6 songs recorded by Jack singing...next to a jukebox. The music has been overdubbed later on, but the jukebox is still audiable underneath - highly recommended

Thanks for the notice Sohoe - will watch it!!!

By the way - for a different look on the beats (this is after Jack died) I'm presently reading a book by Sam Kashner "When I was Cool", concerning the time he was enrolled in the "Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics" - for a while, actually, the ONLY student there.

This is a great read about meeting Ginsberg, Corso, Burroughs and countless others - perhaps in their decline - butr certainly in a different light ;-)

Thanks for the tip on the CD Erik and thanks mofur for the info on the Sam Kashner book.

BTW mofur, the programme I'm talking about, is part of their 'Tema Tirsdag' programmes on DR2, so I think the accurate date might Sep 25th instead.

Sohoe, here's the CD I have
[www.amazon.com]
Can't understand why they put that horrible review on top - with all the good [and true] ones below.

Have only listened to this one - but I'll have to get it myself sooner or later

Thanks Erik, say track 9 off the first CD you listed, that's Tom Waits isn't it?

Yes it's Tom. THere's also a song by Primus there - which I don't care for
Everything else is a fantastic listen, especially the 6 songs in which Jack does sing

Jack sings? Wow....I got a lot of CD's and records with Allen Ginsberg singing - but no Jack ;-)

...and Tom took a lot of leaves out of Jack's book ;-) ("Jack was sitting poker faced with bullets backed with bitches/Neal hunched at the wheel putting everyone in stitches"; "jack and neal", Foreign Affairs)

c'mon, kerouac is at best a marginal literary talent; much of his acclaim springs from the counter-culture aura that surrounded him.

cees nooteboom's superb 'Roads to Santiago' is a far superior "journey" book . . .now there's a man who really has something to say . . .

Hey, cool it.
Dont have to be ultra-elitist all the time, NB.

Keruoac will never fade away.

excuse me, mr. phD, but what's "elitist" about having, oh, i dunno, taste?

does my liking the stones over, i dunno, journey, somehow make me an "elitist?"

gimme shelter - or at least a break.

Thanks to Sohoe for this thread on the IORR-Site.

I was really addicted to Kerouacs books and read them all - several times.

He's been quite similar important for me as the Stones and Keith Richards.

"On The Road" is perhaps my favorite book.......and yes it inspired me.

Other books that inspired me are "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas," and "The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test," to name a few.

Hunter S. Thompson - YES!!!! Such a brilliant writer. I fyou've only read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" you should give his more political musings a chance. He is/was a very keen analyst of American politics.

And to boot there is that classic interview: HST versus Keith Richards ;-)

I often have arguments with friends about the true merits of Kerouac. Quite a few share Nikkibong's views but personally I think he was amazing, a true pioneering spirit & fantastic writer. I gave up a depressing clerical job in London, telling the boss to stuff it up his arse and went travelling in the States mainly because of reading 'On The Road' (then the others). Shame he loathed hippies as he was a leading influence & inspiration to the whole '60s counter culture.

Thanks for the tip about the cd Erik, I've just ordered a copy: had no idea there was one.

Thanks mofur. Yes, I have many of Hunter's books. In fact I think I have all of them. I miss him.
