How to save money in London?
Posted by: RollingStonesFan ()
Date: August 20, 2007 13:37

From tomorrow on, I'll be in London for 7 days.
I know that London is said to be the most expensive town in Europe.
So how may I save some money, I mean, where will I get something cheap to eat / drink...any suggestions?

for a cheap meal/drink, head for any Wetherspoons pubs.
they do some great bargains.

There's a chineese place just opposite King's Cross Station "Chop Chop" and if you look a bit around the same part of town, there's a few indian restaurants as well, but be aware and look closely at the prices in the different restaurants.

If there is access to a microwave in your hotel/hostel all supermarkets do ready meals. That would be the cheapest method. Wetherspoons is really cheap but I'm not sure of the quality. Beers are generally good and inexpensive though.

Chinatown is actually about the cheapest place to eat well in London, in my experience

Re: How to save money in London?

Big Tesco,s and other supermarkets do breakfasts for cheaper than you can make yourself, if you like that kind of thing. Asian offlicences often do cans of beer/lager cheaper than chainstores, or anywhere else for that matter.

go to free attractions during the day like the tate modern or national portrait gallery or natural history museum, with food that you have bought at a supermarket. They all have picnic areas.

Travel after 9.30am on a travelcard and pick before hand which zones you want.

Then spend spend spend spend in the Pilot before the show!

Instead of London, England, try one of these other Londons.
(Only problem is that you won't see the Stones in any of these.)

London, Kiribati
London, Oregon United States
London, California United States
London, Texas United States
London, Missouri United States
London, Arkansas United States
London, Minnesota United States
London, Orange Walk District Belize
London, Alabama United States
London, Indiana United States
London, Kentucky United States
London, Michigan United States
London, Ohio United States
London, Tennessee United States
London, West Virginia United States
London, Province d' Ontario Canada
London, Pennsylvania United States
London, Estado Miranda Venezuela
London, Nigeria
London, Equatorial Guinea
London, South Africa
London, Altayskiy Kray Russia
London, Kachin State Burma
London, Province of South Cotabato Philippines

All are less costly than London, England.

Try and do what Jon Voight did in MIDNIGHT COWBOY - only you have to succeed a bit more than he did in the film (I think he actually lost money). A Ratso Rizzo type is probably not needed, fly solo on this one if at all possible, it's only a few days....

Break into Madonna's Flat while she's away and check the shoe box under her bed. That's where she keeps all her money I hear......

As Adrian pointed out, Wetherspoon pubs are the cheapest places to eat and drink in London and their beer selection is second to none. The only think they lack is atmosphere.

London isn't really that bad compared to other European capital cities. As long as you avoid the obviously tourist attractions and head around the corner and find an inexpensive pub you can eat fresh good food and drink for not very much money. Wetherspoon pubs are OK but you can eat cheaper and better at quite a few local boozers which also offer plenty of atmosphere. Menus are generally fixed to the wall outside restaurants and pubs but look out for boards with todays special deals on at some places. Some pubs do 2 meals for £8 - good if you have a companion.

"Greasy Spoon" cafes are plentiful and offer full cooked breakfasts for next to nothing.

Food and drink in any of the big supermarkets cost no more in London than anywhere else in the UK and often things are cheaper than in much of mainland Europe.

For takeaways or restaurants, there are plenty of inexpensive and GOOD QUALITY options.

The UK is blessed with some of the best Indian restaurants in Europe and these are plentiful - the UK's national dish is curry and that's official. You can't go wrong with a good curry and it won't break the bank - even in a restaurant instead of takeaway (typically takeaways offer 10 - 20% discount.

Chinese restaurants are good too but often a lot more expensive than their takeaway counterparts. Thai / Veitnamese / Indonesian restaurants are also all over the capital, along with various other international cuisine restaurants and takeaways.

There are plenty of little Italian and Irish sandwich shops on street corners where you can get various nice bits and peices, including salads, sandwiches, pies, coffee, cakes etc, all made with fresh ingredients. Pubs also do sandwhiches and, if you get a good one, these are often gourmet!

Fish and chips - not healthy everyday but when in England you must go to a good old fashioned chippy. Cod and chips will definitely not break the bank!

There is also the option of McDonalds and Burger King if you want to poisen your body - but I'd avoid those.

In addition to the Wetherspoon pubs, there are planty of little pubs where you can get a pint for about £2.50 or less. Real ale is normally the best bet as opposed to bottled drinks which attract a hefty premium. Avoid fashionable modern bars as these are nearly always a fortune and instead head to god old fashioned pubs. There have already been posts about the best pub in previous threads.

Don't get taxis - get travel cards if you want to travel around london. These are valid on buses, tube and trains and you can travel all day for about a fiver.

Hopefully the above tips will help and also search for older posts where people have asked about what to do etc. London can be expensive but it doesn't have to be.

When I visited London last year I stayed in a hotel in Camden.

There is a nice market there where you can get Moroccan, Japanese and Indonesian food at low prices.

I thought that especially the Moroccan food was great......

(there's also a shop where they sell bootlegs, although I do not understand why people still buy bootlegs when you can easily download them winking smiley )

I think RollingStonesFan was asking how to save money in London and not how to spend 13 GBP on a burger. I loved to go there when it opened, bought lots of stuff signed by Bill etc. but today it's just a stupid place to get ripped off.

It's good to read that I'm not the only one going to London for a week and really is concerned about the strong British currency.. As I'm gonna walk to the O2 Arena, over the Thames and further, I checked out a place called Goddards Pie House in Greenwich. They got it all for about 3£, suits my wallet perfectly and might be a good choice if you get the munchies for that Shepherd's Pie before the show....

Hey MM,

I've just seen this message on Goddards's website...

We are sorry to say that Goddard's Pie House in Greenwich has now closed.
The Goddard's Pie and Mash business was founded in 1890 by Alfred Goddard in Evelyn Street, Deptford, London and sadly, we closed on Sunday 12th November 2006 after 116 years of selling pie and mash.

We would like to thank ALL of our customers over these years for both their custom and their support. Without you all, we would not have been able to continue selling pies for so many years. We thought long and hard about closing, it was a very, very difficult decision to make and we know many regular and long standing customers will now miss their pie and mash fix.

Thank you all again for your kind words and support.

Jeff, Kane and Pam Goddard - Goddard's Pie House

I do hope you get a plate of Keith's favourite, though!

Cheers,

Si.

Oh no! Now my perfect plan of getting a pie reward at the end of my long walk is spoiled! Thank you anyway Simon for giving me the info... Gotta look for another Pie shop now....

Cheers!

Max
