Stones songs you've never heard?
Posted by: Lorenz ()
Date: August 15, 2007 03:33

I just found out I had never heard "Too Tough".
Probably because I never had Undercover, always thought the 80ies stuff is shit.
But actually, that song is cool. That's so funny to discover a new song if you think you've heard them all (including bootlegs). Any songs you just recently (re)discovered?

I had never heard the Stones' Rick Krispies jingle (although I had heard OF it) until Bob Dylan included it in one of his Theme Time Radio Hour Programs. I guess I still have never heard the Italian-language As Tears Go By, either.

As far as anything formally released, I can't think of anything. Maybe some odd outtakes, but not many

Actually before I did'nt even realize how much stuff I had never heard before, until I came on this board. Granted most of it I could probably do without. But I just took another listen to Blinded By Rainbows, the other day and I definitly liked it better than the first time I heard it. Really heavy song, topic wise. Unusual for the Stones.

Honestly, I think if you think that 80's stuff is shit, you don't really like the band. Most of it might not have the quality of Let It Bleed or Exile On Main Street, but calling it 'shit' is quite strong statement. Despite its reputation, Undercover is surprisngly strong and cohesive album, actually. The band rocks very hard, especially in "Too Tough". It is also the last album the band is is on with full cylinders (no solo projects, etc.) and still somehow looking forward. Too bad, the production sounds a bit dated. And yes, perhaps the over-all feeling in the album is a bit tired.

Doxa, I did change my opinion about the 80ies albums - partly. Still hate most of Dirty Work, but I learned to appreciate Undercover.

Well, and this is pretty strange, and I'm sure I'm gonna get loads of shit for this, there is a lot of their very early stuff that I don't have. I don't own all of the 60's albums, especially the really early ones. I have englands newest hitmakers, big hits (high tide and green grass), metamorphosis, and then everything from Beggars Banquet onwards.

I heard each and every of their released songs, even different versions from early stuff like from Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Time Is On My Side, Poison Ivy, Fortune Teller, and a load of outtakes, radio/TV and live stuff. thats why I simply cannot understand why such a great band with such a great catalog and canon of truly great stuff is limiting itself so much to more or less the same songs when theyre creating setlists. I simply cannot understand this!!!

Recently I heard the It's All Over Now iTunes special song (From Olympia or Paradiso '95) for the first time. Otherwise I think I heard them all, even though I don't own all albums yet. I have most albums at least twice, but Flowers I never owned yet for example.
The 80s stuff is so so I'd say. Emotional Rescue is great playing that deserved way better songs. Tattoo You is great. Undercover is OK. Some shit on it and some gems on it. Dirty Work - Don't even get me started. Steel Wheels - Some outdated stuff on there, but I like it quite a bit.

Undercover is the last truly great Rolling Stones album.
Brilliant guitars, inspired Jagger, great songs.

Just ignore the production and you'll see... excellent album.

Thanks to all the great, unselfish posters in the Hot Stuff section, I've pretty much heard all of the Stones songs. I think the only ones I haven't heard yet are from their very early days. Songs like Jaguar and the Thunderbird that they played during their club days but probably never recorded in studio.

Too Tough is excellent, actually it's my favorite from "Undercover"

I've never cared about You Got The Silver until hearing it live this summer !

I've still got lots to discover - after listening to some of the outtakes courtesy of Hot Stuff I've finally just acquired a copy of Their Satanic Majesties. 2000 Man sounds like the Kinks, the reprise of Sing This All Together sounds like Mike Oldfield having an off-day, and the sound-effects are sometimes irritating, but I'm glad I bought it. I'm busy "learning" Citadel right now. And just listen to Keith's guitar on The Lantern!
