Liddas - NO my comment isn't a joke and I really think there is something to it.

{Question} You always hear the Stones camp line: Oh it's Allen Klein &
ABKCO who hold the rights and won't play ball so it can be
released. But when Taylor was in the fold back in 1973 the
movie was released!!! Ladies & Gentelman the Rolling Stones. I went and
saw it many times with their $50000 JBL Quad system..
(sounded like the Stones were in that theater!!!)

So in 1973 something was "worked out" with Klein so that movie could hit
the theaters??? Don't tell me that if the Glimmer Twins wanted that movie
released, it would be "out" by now.. There is something more than Allen
Klein at work here....

The movie was released in 1974 as far as I know. Anyway, there has never been a legal issue with the movie. They just haven't released it on VHS/DVD (Which wasn't possible at the time the film was released). The only legal issue concerning live material was an clausul in the deal with Klein, that said something like, the Stones were not allowed to release any songs from the Decca periode live on record before 1976 (it said nothing about film). That's why the consert album from 1972 never got released. After Mick Taylor had left the band, Jagger tried to release the "lost live album" for the second time, without the Stevie Wonder part, to promote the 1975 american tour, but again it was to early. After that it simply was forgotten, (like the movie), the band had moved in another direction -time waits for no one...

STP - thanks for your input, 73/74 your probably right about 74.. it's been awhile but the movie was released here 7 there for several years after that
initial release. Saw it a nickel&dime theaters years after then...

After 1975 they just simply moved on huh?? I wonder??

There is a BBC interview from I think 1977 where Mick talks about it and mentions still trying to get it released. I think it was brought up because at the time they were releasing Love You Live. I don't think this has anything to do with Taylor being on it which I am sure is being implied here. After Love You Live came out it would make little sense to release a live album from a tour that was over 5 years old. If anything from the past at this point is released this will probably be it, Jagger has talked about this project in a few other interviews in the 80s and 90s.

Great thread, very interesting! If anyone has a scan of that cover it would be great to see here.

It's pretty clear that the Stones themselves (esp. Jagger) are holding all the stuff now. And no matter what they say about staying current or not wanting to release any old stuff, it's a mistake both artistically and commercially. Re-releases and vault digging is a growing business these days, as rock & roll is getting old, and the Stones are limping behind most other big acts (just look at Zeppelin, Dylan, Springsteen, Grateful Dead, etc.). Just look at the audience shot '70 Milan dvd that finally appeared on Dime-A-Dozen (the bootleg site). It had over 500 people downloading/sharing it at once (compared to maybe 50 for most boots posted there). Sure, those people are mostly hard core music fans and collectors but it says something about the actual interest this band's past times.

And who cares if the tourists ignore a '72 live album? Apart from A Bigger Bang, the real fans hasn't gotten anything really interesting since 1998's No Security (and even that one is debatable). I'm just hoping that the tapes don't decline faster than Keith...

I belive Mick will empty the vaults after the final tour. The fact is: if he did it now the comparison between 72/73 and now would not make the present tour look good. The "show" now is probably better. But the "music"- There is no comparison. 72/73 was the best by the best at thier peak. No debate.

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

I think Mick remembers more than he would like us to know. He likes to stay current and pretends to ignore the past, but if he don't open the vaults, someone else will. Luckily it's a big cash cow, that probably won't be left alone for too long.

I don't really think the vaults are a big cash cow. Besides us hard core fans no one really gives a sh*t about classic rock anymore. The kids are listening to hip hop and some sh*tty new bands that appear on LETTERMAN and LENO (and CONAN and CARSON DAILY) but I really believe classic rock is a sinking ship. Look at the Plant/Page tour/album (Walking Into Clarksdale) over 10 years ago, that wasn't as big considering it really was a Zep reunion tour (as close as there ever was gonna be one). Naw, the more time marches on the less important (to the masses) will be THE STONES or THE BEATLES or BOB DYLAN or THE DOORS or LED ZEPPELIN - 20 years ago all the kids were into classic rock but it's just not like that anymore. I'm just saying if they were to release LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I doubt it would make that much money, would sell that much... only us hard core fans would care - the masses are watching AMERICAN IDOL. The Recent Stones Tours make the most money and if you haven't noticed, they've been touring a lot in the last few years (almost non - stop). As they said to the WATERGATE BOYS - "Follow The Money" ALWAYS FOLLOW THE MONEY and you'll find your answer......(and it ain't about Mick Taylor or THE RIGHTS to those songs, etc - NO MONEY / NO INTEREST / NO MOVIE)

It could well be that Jagger and Richards and the rest of the band simply have an eye on keeping the brand alive for generations to come.

Ownership of material that has us all salivating like Pavlov dog's will pass on to their heirs. It's not like the band needs more money now. They could be thinking of the financial security of the family members who will inherit the rights to their creative resources.

Music that was never released to begin with may be an entirely different story. As artists, one or more of the Stones may perceive this material to be sub-par so it stays somewhat locked up. Somehow some things still leak out. Maybe it's best that the band not release this material under its own imprint. It allows them to not embrace the quality, which prevented them from releasing it to begin with.

Having stepped inside Jagger's shoes and used his brain for the purpose of composing this post, I'm going to slip back into my own shoes and return to my own brain.

By the way, I was hoping that someone would have posted the artwork for the unreleased Decca album. My attempts to find it by Googling have failed.

One side of the cover shows a poster of a silhouetted Jagger plastered on a (brick?) wall. The other side of the cover showed a poster with a silhouetted Stevie Wonder in the same style.

I can see it in my head. I know I've seen the artwork somewhere. But I can't post a link to my brain.

anything that will give the band extra cash once they stop touring they will do.

I'm sure Keith & Jagger will eventually unlock some treasures once they have @#$%&-all to do....

No, but there are countless good recordings that surfaced in the last few years that are. The best I've heard (not that I'm an audiophile however) is "You Can't Do That Baby".

I dont believe we'll much from the vaults either. WHich is too bad.
Plus I dont believe there's a whole lot in the vaults..
the disc they sold at STARBUCKS was fair at best..
its too bad they did'nt do enough set listing changes like the dead..
they could release different shows like the DICKS PICKS series..(Dead)
but since 8 songs are played at every show it would'nt be worth it for the fan.

I don't know how much of the actual album is out there. Keep Your Motor Running may be as close as we get. There's a very informative thread about the unreleased '72 live album over on Hot Stuff. Check Urban Steel's threads and you can actually download KYMR in lossless quality.

Several tracks on KYMR are very obviously overdubbed. It is my opinion that these overdubbed tracks were at least being worked up for the live album. Why else would they be overdubbed? Nico Zentgraf's website has a list of songs that supposedly composed the unreleased '72 live album. These songs were broadcast on the radio. Zentgraf, however lists the source shows for some of these songs as being different than the source shows for Keep Your Motor Running. He also goes on to say that some of the locations were unsure. I always figured that Nico was just mistaken on a couple of tunes since even he admitted that some of the locations were unsure.

From memory, here's Keep Your Motor Running....

"Brown Sugar", "Bitch", and "Gimme Shelter" from Philadelphia 7/20/72.
"Happy" from Ft. Worth 6/24/72 1st show (same version as L&G movie)
"Tumbling Dice" from Philly 7/20/72
"Sweet Virginia" from Philly 7/20 or 7/21/72 1st show (can't remember)
"You Can't Always Get What You Want" from Houston 6/25/72 1st show (same version as L&G but has a vocal overdub)
"All Down The Line" from Philadelphia 7/21/72 2nd show
"Bye Bye Johnny" from Philly 7/20/72
"Rip This Joint" from Philly 7/20/72
"Uptight/Satisfaction" from Philly 7/20/72.

....and this is what Nico Zentgraf says about the radio broadcast of the '72 tour album.....

US radio (WMMS)/(Radio Cleveland).
Broadcast of the unreleased 1972 tour live-album.
- You Can't Always Get What You Want (MJ/KR) - Houston 25.6.72, 1st show
- Sweet Virginia (MJ/KR) -Philadelphia 21.7.72, 1st show
- Bitch (MJ/KR) -Philadelphia 20.7.72
- All Down The Line (MJ/KR) -Houston 25.6.72, 1st show
- Happy (MJ/KR) -Fort Worth 24.6.72, 1st show
- Tumbling Dice (MJ/KR) -Philadelphia 20.7.72
- Rip This Joint (MJ/KR)-Fort Worth 24.6.72, 1st show
- Gimme Shelter (MJ/KR) -Philadelphia 20.7.72
- Brown Sugar (MJ/KR) -Philadelphia 20.7.72
- Uptight/Satisfaction (Sylvia Moy/Henry Cosby/Stevie Wonder)(MJ/KR)
-unidentified source, July 1972
Note: Some dates and places are unsure.

So there are a view differences here. Maybe just mistakes on Zentgraf's part? Or maybe the Stones were working on different versions of the same song. They did this with Love You Live.

Note that on both versions, no songs are included that appeared on Get Yer Ya Ya's Out.

Anywayz, there's some info for anybody who's interested. You can make up your own minds about which one is the "real" unreleased live album, or if it's even out there.

>Not exactly. Jagger keeps the cover of Decca album "Through The Past, Darkly" LP in his hand, takes out a Rolling Stones Records vinyl (yellow label with tongue), and puts it on and out comes live sounding versions of "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" - neither of them from the Decca album, and they didn't sound "Love You Live" versions either. That's how much I remember, and I haven't seen it for over 20 years...

They're the LYL versions -- I saw it not long ago.

Motor Running is the real deal-- fully mixed and mastered--the giveaways are Keith's backing vox on Tumbling Dice (full studio overdubs) and the background vox on All Down the Line. The album is a mix of Texas, NYC and Philly--and if Bye Bye Johnny from PA doesn't give you goosebumps, nothing will.

OK, opening the vaults may perhaps not lead to a big cash flow, but opening them now would surely generate more money than if they decide to open them up in say 10 years from now. While we hard core fans are still alive music from the vaults could sell quite well, but the longer they wait, the fewer of us are left, able to buy the music..........

I don't think there's anything from New York on Keep Your Motor Running. It's very clear that many (if not all) of the songs on Keep Your Motor Running were at least being worked on for the live album (overdubs, etc.). But something that I think is strange is that Stevie Wonder's vocals can barely be heard on "Uptight/Satisfaction".

I always thought that Keep Your Motor Running was the "real deal" but there was a thread about this over on the Hot Stuff forum in which a couple of people said that it wasn't so. So I'm quite unconvinced either way. I think Keep Your Motor Running is the closest thing we have right now, but I'm not sure if it's the actual unreleased album or not. Some of the songs on it are definately the same versions that were to be used on the album.

If it was the 'real deal', it seemed far from finished, although the sound quality isn't poor, it's not of the same caliber as some of the L&G soundtracks floating around.

Performance quality I suppose could be debated.

Although none of those have the Stevie Wonder collaboration...

I guess if some people are hung up on hearing a live album with overdubs in it's early stages (not to mention a fine performance!), this is good. But for a more thorough view of that tour with almost flawless sound, I'd try one of the L&G soundtracks.

Or just skip to the next tour and get Brussels Affair Definitive Edition (yet that lacks on of the '72 standouts, Bye Bye Johnnie).

Umm...aren't you forgetting the band "toured" Australia/NZ in between ??

Arguably alot better than the US Tour and Euro Tour !!!!

Give me a live album from this Tour....oh hang on - Perth, Sydney (both shows) do me fine - all being superb raw soundboards...what a Tour that was !
