OT: Prince at the O2
Posted by: Papalaz1 ()

Anyone going? I've got tickets for Saturday - quite looking forward to it. Might be wrong but I think I remember reading that Prince once opened for the Stones but got roundly booed for being too "faggy"!

It was probably Keith booing ;^)

Got Prince for two nights - but no Stones yet.

Going in August and September, two nights apiece, plus Saturday aftershows, because he'll probably play those nights too.

Prince supported The Stones in '81. He turned up on stage in bikini briefs and sang about shagging his sister in a high voice. Result? He was bottled off.

Haha - would love to have seen that.

I mistakenly thought he was playing all aftershows - would need some stamina for that.

Indeed. He'll only play aftershows on nights/mornings where he doesn't have a show the following day.

You sure about that, Nikolai? Bugger, Was hoping he'll do the aftershow on the 24th as its his first shows for a week or so.

Seems a bit odd to advertise it as a Prince show without any disclaimer that he may not play. Whilst I wouldnt expect him to sing that much to save his voice, I'd hope he'd at least play on a few songs. I'd imagine the demand for the nights with no show the next day would have far outstripped the rest.

Got all my Prince tickets for both shows on Friday the 24th last weekend

first night of his 21 stand is tomorrow.

Indeed. I remember this very well. I had seen Prince at the Ritz in New York before on the same tour so I knew what to expect. Not many others appreciated his act...and he was lustily blasted off the stage. A shame, really...his show was boiling hot.

I'll be in London for the Stones AND Prince in late August...I'm hoping for an epochal time!

I'm pretty sure, Gazza. You never know, but that's usually the way he plays aftershows. No sense in him tiring out his voice if he's got a string of shows to play.

If you go onto 3121.com, you'll find a diclaimer in Princespeak saying that there is no guarantee that he'll perform at an aftershow. They should have called it an "Afterparty" and been more specific.

You know, back in the day (1987, when I first saw him play on the Sign O The times tour), he didn't announce aftershows at all. Someone from his entourage would leak it to a group of hardcore fans (who sold the fanzines like Controversy) and it was a word of mouth thing. Then he started announcing them at the end of gigs. He only made them "official" (i.e: ticketed) in 2002.

I just registered on Housequake.com a couple of days ago and there seem to be a few gripes about the wording on the official announcements regarding these shows which seem to have changed in the last few days to downplay the suggestions that Prince - and even the NPG for that matter - may perform.

Can understand the issue of tiring out his voice, but one of our members on Rocks Off who has seen several LA area aftershows said that when he does show up, he might just jam and not necessarily sing.

I would bet however that he'll play the aftershow tomorrow at opening night. The publicity from that will be bound to shift tickets.

Its also quite funny (in a twisted way) reading stories from long-term die-hard fans who are complaining about being fan club members, paying money to support him through thick and thin and who then get offered shit seats for the 02 - only to see better seats pop up at a later date for the benefit of 'casual' fans.

Sounds very familiar. Although, to be fair at least they werent paying £150 a ticket plus £50 membership fees for theirs...LOL

Are you going to the 24/8/07 show? Hopefully you'll meet up with us ..

I'm one of those long term, diehard fans, but I'm not complaining, because Prince isn't charging $100 for fanclub membership. He's not charging anything because he's not running a commercial fanclub at the moment.

When he DID run one, you not only got tickets in the first five or six rows, but you got to go to the soundcheck, talk to him and, if he played an aftershow, you got to go that too. For free. Those were great times. And he was making pretty great music then too, not this flaccid crap he's been giving away witn The Mail.

Anyway, a friend of mine is going to ALL 21 shows AND the aftershows. He's a fellow Glaswegian, so I was a bit shocked by his largesse. Except he's got bloody BALCONY seats at the aftershows. I've explained to him that all he might be watching is people standing around waiting for something to happen. Hope the seats are comfy.

Sadly not going to 24/8. I'm going this Saturday and on 17/8. Then twice in September. Don't worry Gazza, we'll always have Dylan, right? (LOL).

Unless you're into Springsteen, because I'm hearing STRONG rumours about a London show in October/November with the E Street Band. Reputable source too.

Christ. I remember trying to get tickets for that one-off Wembley Arena show on the 6-date Euro tour in 2002. not a prayer. Ive heard various rumours about an album out in the autumn and some shows to follow but 'Badlands' reckon there wont be Euro shows this year. We'll see.

Yeah. course I'm going to the The Stones, Gazza. 21/8.

If Badlands says there won't be a Euro tour, then there might not be.

I saw Bruce at Wembley Arena in 2002. I got the ticket at the last minute, from someone who couldn't go. Apparently over half of them went to touts, just like the Royal Albert Hall ones did in 2005.

Great show, that Wembley one. Have it on DVD.

There's a great moment when Bruce is talking before one of the songs ("Empty Sky" I think) and from WAY back in the audience this guy (who apparently does this every time he sees him) shouts "Bruce - I fookin' love ya"....Springsteen gives a quick grimace and quick as a flash replies..."Too much love drives a man insane - Jerry lee Lewis..."

see ya at the Pilot Inn on the 21st. be there early!

Ok, I'll be there. I'll be bringing my brother along too.

I have it on good authority that Bruce will be touring Europe in November/December. Watch this space for dates. Seriously.

Rumours are for December for Bruce & the E Street in Europe for a short ten date arena tour, then Summer 2008 stadium tour.

I guess it's either O2 or Wembley Arena for London initially.

My guess is Wembley Arebna again. But it's just a guess. The O2 would be better, numbers wise.

Maybe!

BBC's review of the Prince gig says that apparently he has about 150 songs rehearsed from which he's going to draw a variety of setlists for each show.

Has anybody received the CD that was promised with their tickets? Or are they giving them out on the gates on the night?

I just bought a floor ticket for Prince on 25 August in block C1 Row A1.
That's a real bargain for a total cost of £ 34.71 including a free cd.

He does. Each night will be different, although you can expect some overlap.
