The Greatest Ever?
According to many cineasts anyway.

Fell asleep for the last time this morning in his Fårö home,
just outside Gotland.

Sorry to hear it. Woody Allen certainly thought he was the greatest ever, and I remember reading an interview with Brando a few years ago when he scoffed at the over-use of the word 'art' in cinema by saying it was only the preserve of a select few, such as Bergman, Fellini, etc.

RIP

Sad to hear, but as a swede, I never got what was so great about him.
Only movie of his that I could watch from start to end was Fanny & Alexander, the rest were too heavy.

Very sad news indeed. I've always been a huge fan of his, collected his movies on VHS (yes, long time ago) and went to Dramaten to see his plays. I once worked with his youngest daughter, Linn Ullman, and really felt like talking about her famous dad, but I did not have the courage... I met her mum on several occations, though.
Tonight I'll find Ingmar Bergmans autobiography in the bookshelves, Laterna Magica, and read it over again, with a good bottle of something white.
And Ingmar, since you're there - why not make a documentary about the guys we call "The Too Soon Gones"...

I had the pleasure to see him in Stockholm in 1992. for a theater premiere on the Dramaten!
One of the best ever!! Will be missed

RIP

Sad news indeed. Mr Bergman was definitely one of the greatest filmmakers ever.
I'll watch a few episodes of "Scenes from a Marriage" this evening to honour Ingmar Bergman.

Sad to hear - Bergman surely was one of the best ever - he didn't follow the stream

Saw his production of "Ghosts" at the Barbican a couple(maybe more) of years ago, extraordinary work. "Fanny and Alexander" one of my favourite films ever. His book "The Magic Lantern" was just that, he was revalatory. RIP

And remeber boys & girls.

Time waits for no one..........

Yes, star crossed in pleasure the stream flows on by
Yes, as we're sated in leisure, we watch it fly

And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me
And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me

Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman's face
Hours are like diamonds, don't let them waste

Time waits for no one, no favours has he
Time waits for no one, and he won't wait for me

Men, they build towers to their passing yes, to their fame everlasting
Here he comes chopping and reaping, hear him laugh at their cheating

And time waits for no man, and it won't wait for me
Yes, time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me

Drink in your summer, gather your corn
The dreams of the night time will vanish by dawn

And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me
And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me

No no no, not for me....

I loved the TV series "The Best Intentions", which was written by Bergman (and directed by Bille August), about his parents.

Very sad news. I'm a big fan of his films: "Cries and Whispers", "Persona", "Seventh Seal", "Scenes from a Marriage", etc. It's been years since I've seen them but I remember them. Outstanding stuff.

PERFORMANCE was markedly influenced by PERSONA.

When discussing an artist of his challenging magnitude I've discovered that it's so much easier for some to dismiss rather than examine. Others (e.g., Fellini, Kurosawa) reached similar heights sometimes but none so frequently as Ingmar Bergman.

(And now Antonioni is gone as well.)

Very sad news. A great filmmaker he was. He died just a Week after the famous cinamatographer Laszlo Kovacs, who was responsible for the famous last shot in Easy Rider, passed away at age 67.

Sad to loose 2 such contributors to the art of cinema within a Week.
