Chuck Levell....what a surprise
Posted by: MarcJ ()
Date: July 17, 2007 14:37

While i was ripping some old LPs into digital files I suddenly noticed that Chuck Levell was in the 70' part of the bands like "Sea Level", "Allman Brothers Band", "Gregg Allman"...I must admit that i have always loved those bands bringing some good music extending my music horizon...

I do now understand why the Stones have hired him since a while to support musically the live performances.

Actually, Pay, there's all quite good, especially the Allman Brothers Band.

Chuck was hired as they didn't want to bring in another guitar player - unfair comparisons to Duane, etc.

Yes, I never understood why people would want to make music like The Allman Brothers Band. Why did theybother? Doesn't seem to be any point.

Huh? Inspired jazz-flavored rock-blues played by some fine musicians with a great, soulful vocalist. What's not to like?

Are they perfect? No, but pretty damn good. The current line-up features two of the planet's best guitar players - and Gregg is still sounding good. Wish Betts would get his act together though.

I don't like southern rock because of all the confederate flags on stage and in the crowd. That flag is a symbol of something I truly hate, and even if the bands themselves didn't mean anything by it, I can't support it. Thats coming from a white dude born in Georgia by the way.

I hate Chuck Leavell because he represents Chuck Leavell.

Well, some people makes music, some posts worthwhile opinions...

I'm not talking about flags, etc (BTW, that was Skynyrd, not AB band) I'm talking about the music. The ABB were a racially-mixed band from the start.

That's coming from a white dude born in Georgia by the way.

Good point there, pay, all of us down here aren't inbred, toothless, bozos - yeah, there are some of those around (and I'm just talking about the women)! winking smiley

Really, I see very little old-style racism any more.

I get all those bands mixed up. Why did alot of these bands have so many members? Whats the point of 3 guitarists and more importantly, 2 drummers? I know the Stones have 3 guitarists alot, when Mick or blondie plays, but those southern bands were different. They had all these guys playing on every song and were regular members of the band.

None of those guys could outplay one Charlie.

The Allman Brothers are in the top ten American bands ever in my opinion.
Their blues, jazz and southern rock style is unique. Duane Allman was admired by Eric Clapton so much he Duane played the lead on Layla.

I love the music of the ABB. What's not to like about 'Blue Sky','One way Out', 'Southband' and so many more??

There were/are a lot of good players among the southern rock boys.

Toy Caldwell
Rick Medlocke
Duane/Betts/Gregg/Butch/Jaimoe/Derek Trucks/Haynes
Collins/Rossington/King/Gaines/Powell/Wilkerson - Skynyrd
Elvin Bishop

..... the lsit is endless (like some of the songs) ....

To me, Taz from Charlie Daniels Band or Billy Powell from Skynyrd would have been a better fit for the Stones - it didn't work out that way.

Didn't one southern rock band knock up another southern rock band and the result was the Hold On Loosely guys?

In over 35 years, I never actually heard anyone say the Allman Brothers suck. That's astounding.

Should I feel special then? I just don't like the style of playing. Maybe if I listened closer......or at all......I might feel different about it. Who knows?

I do hate the Ramblin Man band.....whoever that was.

Seems like all those bands had some dudes whistle the changes....that or they were calling their dogs.

38 Special had a brother of the lead singer from Lynyrd Skynyrd, but they're nowhere in close to being in the same league as the Allmans, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, or Charlie Daniels.

I agree with texas fan, I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that about the ABB either. Just wish Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts could somehow agree to play together again. Derek Trucks is an outstanding slide guitarist. Saw him with Eric Clapton a while back, he is truly amazing, closest to Duane we're gonna get.

BTW, I've seen the ABB many times and never remember a Confederate Flag on stage.

Wanna hear something good?

Sorry folks - just doesn't grab me. Didn't mean to offend/astound etc. I can see they're popular with many of you. Perhaps many here would be negative about Budgie, for example, though I love them. Maybe I should have another listen. Perhaps I'm even mixing them up with the Average White Band - now they are bad!

Ok, went to youtube, tried my best, but lost all interest when I spotted a cowboy hat. I'm like Superman on kryptonite about cowboy hats.Don't do cowboy hats. ZERO TOLERANCE for cowboy hats. Ten gallon hat covering a two oz. brain. I hate cowboy hats. Despise cowboy hats. Cowboy hats really piss me off.I'm hugely offended by cowboy hats. Cowboy hats are the worst kind of hats. Cowboy hats give other hats a bad name. Other hats should shun cowboy hats, like the Amish. My two Stones hats should gang up on cowboy hats. Everytime I see a cowboy hat, I think of Festus. I don't like thinking about Festus.

Who the Hell is Melissa? Does she wear a cowboy hat?

Allmans are a truely great blues band, maybe the best white American blues band. Funny that fans of the Stones can hate a music that is based on the same style of music.

Yes, I really must be thinking of the Average White Band. Do they look alike?

Do you hate Dylan as well, he wears them. I really don't care what they look like, just care about the sound of the music.

I prefer cowboy hats to baseball caps, though they both send out mixed messages about the wearer. I prefer a sunhat - no cultural/ideological connections - and more practical.

Bob Dylan, are you kidding? He's great if you like a guy who sounds like his nuts are being squeezed while a frog is caught in his throat.
