OT:Funeral Song

Ok, not to be morbid here. But I know this a topic that's been kicked around before. But I haven't seen any threads on it in a while. We are all pretty much musical people I would imagine and who hasn't thought of what song (or songs) they would want played as you are sent to that big Rock & Roll (Stairway to) Heaven...............Me personally I want to hear (yes I will hear it) No Expectations on the way in to the church. Perfect,"I've got No Expectations to pass through here again"...........As they're carrying me out I want them to play Thunder Road. So my last words to everybody will be "It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

A couple others............Elton John:Funeral Friend, just the instrumental dirge part. Not the whole Love Lies Bleeding part. I've also got a friend who wants to hear Led Zeppelin - In My Time Of Dying.........I told him that's a good choice, but I'm not gonna stand around for 10 mins and listen to it.LOL.

Crazy Fingers

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Your rain falls like crazy fingers
Peals of fragile thunder
Keeping time
Recall the days that still are to come
Some sing blue

Hang your heart on laughing willow
Stray down to the water
Deep sea of love
Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea
Swift undertow

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know
See how it feels in the end
May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you
Soft, strong, sweet and true

Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow
Tapping at the window
Touch your hair
So swift and bright, strange figures of light
Float in air

Who can stop what must arrive now?
Something new is waiting
To be born
Dark as the night you're still by my side
Shine inside
Gone are the days we stopped to decide
Where we should go, we just ride
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams
Gone, both dream and lie

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know
Feels like it might be alright
While Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you
Love still rings true

Midnight on a carousel ride
Reaching for the gold ring
Down inside
Never could reach it, just slips away
But I try

For all the wrong reasons.sad smiley............Seriously CYHMK would'nt be bad as a funeral song, all things considered.

I think maybe Dixie Toot from Rod Stwarts Smiler album. A song about how to approach life and death and ends with the final verse:

I took my luck,I didn't give a @#$%&, I had a good time
Tell all my friends only my best to have a good time
Goodbye

Shine A Light!!! Also Saint of Me.......cause they'll NEVER make a saint of me! And then I hope Exile would be played in its entirety. Dig it.

"And I'm growin' funny flowers in my little window sill"

Will return with an answer;
but they played Changes with Sabbath for my friend who passed away
on Dec 30, 2005. And the Swedish Kråkbegravningen, which he always
sang, at Roskilde & everywhere (by Jojje Wadenius, ex-Blood, Sweat & Tears)
Also Waterboys.
Pickin' one song would be tough.
There is a Hungarian heavy rock ballad Tepd El Az Idöt,
translated Stop The Time, I could imagine for my funeral.
It's on DINAMIT's second and last album.

Funerals have evolved over the years.

A few years ago a very good friend of ours died at the age of 47 after a bout with cancer that lasted several years. She was a wonderful lady, and the large chapel at the cemetary was packed with family and friends. Presiding over the service was a priest who was a friend of hers, a tall, pleasant Irish man in his 50's with lilting voice and a full head of white hair who reminded me of the priests you see in movies from the '30's and 40's.

Anyway, she had wanted her favorite song played at the service. So after a very traditional opening, with a scripture reading and a prayer, the priest says, "And now we will hear, the... hymn.., "Imagine" (!!). And of course, it starts with "Imagine there's no heaven..." Which is probably the last thing you want to hear when you're hoping that your loved one is now resting in a better place. The poor padre was really trying to make the best of it. It was a truly weird, awkward moment that we still shake our heads and chuckle about.

I think a better Lennon song would have been "Love," (but it wasn't my funeral)

Two years ago I put together a slide show shown at a funeral for another good friend (His name was Dan, also cancer--an unbelievable, heroic, nine year struggle) and behind the photos of him and his family we played an instrumental version (solo guitar) of "Danny Boy." It was very, very powerful--just tore your heart out.

For years I always said that for my funeral I'd like the song "Just For A Moment" (that Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane did for the "Mahoney's Last Stand" movie soundtrack) played.

But my wife and I have been together over 25 years, and we've raised two great sons, so now I'd have to say that "Moment" wouldn't capture the essence of what has been a fortunate, wonderful life.

Now I'd pick the (actual) hymn, "Shall We Gather At The River" which I like to hear in church...and John Ford movies.

though the prankster in me would love to try everyone's patience with Pink Floyd's Echoes or Shine On You Crazy Diamond or Stones at Brussels (the whole show, haha) or an Alan Watts lecture on early chinese taoism or some inspirational politically progressive call to arms, i'ld probably settle with Floyd's Pigs On The Wing, pts 1 and 2.

This is actually a good topic, though I don't plan on shedding my mortal coils anytime soon. The one I've picked is "Appalachia Waltz" (Mark O'Connor/Edgar Meyer/Yo-Yo Ma).

I'm sentimental, yes, so this one would also be for friends & family who had previously traveled to the great beyond.

Damn, I think I'm gonna cry now -- thanks a LOT! (Just kidding)

I'd choose something with Elvis - not quite sure which one.
To me - Black Limousine from Memphis 69 is about death....the black limousine is death itself that picks us up.....first the girl, and then Elvis "and I'd be with you in that long limousine" It also has those churchbells in the beginning

I've let it be known that at the church, they are to play " Wild Horses" before, during and after the ceremony. Not an instrumental versioon, although that may be nice for the before portion. " Danny Boy" must have been nice, and certainly gut-wrenching.
