The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars by David Bowie. A timepiece that flows from beginning to end. Pure genius.

Crowded House - Woodface, probably the best collection of pop music ever written.

Some good albums in there ,but I think the multiple choice was covered on the thread Essential albums a couple of weeks back,I was more interested in finding out if people had am album that they played more than any other, usually without even realizing .
I must admit it was a tough choice to leave out some albums like
Ryan Adams Gold
Black Crows Shake Your Moneymaker
Faces A Nods As Good As A Wink

But Blonde on Blonde is by far the album that gets most played and never dissapoints
I love Blood on the Tracks , Highway 61 ,Desire and Modern times a lot too.
I was once stuck in traffic for 3 hours ,and while everybody was getting irritable I had Blonde on Blonbe in my car and I just let it play over and over while we waited, bliss.
Unfortunately the car I have now has an energy saving program so it switches off the cd player after 20 minutes ,so I have to turn the engine back on for a few more minutes .
Now that would be a real test of an album if I ever got stuck again

It's nice to see a lot of classic albums mentioned in this thread. Most people are mentioning albums that have been around awhile, and they're all gems. It was a pleasure to see someone mention Elvis Costello --now there's an artist whose body of work knocks me out.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Stevie Wonder yet. His stretch of albums from Music of My Mind ('71, I think) to Songs in the Key of Life ('76) blows me away. And the fresh tracks he tacked on to the Original Musiquarium compilation make for a convenient package to enjoy some of Stevie's best.

Not many people are mentioning younger bands. There are a lot of great musicians out there cranking out albums and delivering killer performances.

To that list, I would mention Wilco, Arcade Fire, White Stripes (although I still have not seen White Stripes live). A little further off the beaten path, you find bands like the Dears and Of Montreal. One band that had a lot of potential but then imploded was Beta Band (their Three EPs collection is brilliant).

And I don't know if anyone on this board has ever mentioned one of my current favorite bands: Belle and Sebastian. Their most recent album, The Life Pursuit, blew me away.

There's so much great music out there.

i know alot (ok, most) people can't get around anderson's high voice, but to me this is some of the most stunningly original music ever recorded and most of it puts the studio versions to shame. siberian khatru, close to the edge, heart of the sunrise, etc. Howe is on fire; classical guitar, lap steel, acoustic, 12-string, electric semi-hollowbody, slide, coral sitar guitar....all while singing harmonies and playing odd-meter stuff that's all over the map. though there's none of the crunchy RAWK guitar i love (zep, stones, who, ac/dc, cooper...), this has to be regarded as one of the pinnacles of live guitar playing ever recorded. i recently got the remastered version on 2 cds, well worth the $ if you've never heard it or want to re-acquaint with it.
