I miss Gimme Shelter on the setlist
Date: July 7, 2007 00:53

anybody else ??

Please put it on the list - I need to hear it at least once on my remaining shows.

I do not need a cover song, although I know it works quite well at the shows. But hey, gimme shelter should be a must.

Couldn't agree more. Please bring it back!

I don't consider this song as a warhorse, when it comes to live performances, because they really have never played it to death like all the warhorses that come in the last 1/3 of the concerts. The thing is, of all the most famous Stones songs that they play live, this is the one I never tire of hearing. I feel they could easily drop any one of the songs they play at every show and repalce it with Gimme Shelter and the casual fan audience members wouldn't be in any way upset and the show as a whole would improve.

I know not many agree but in my Stones concert virgin ears
it sounds like it lost its edge thruout the lame 80s.
Give it back the egde & I'm gonna miss it more.

It's sounded really weak most of the last few tours.

True - Gimme shelter is not really a warhorse. But all people I know who like music know and favour this song, even if they are not especially fond of the Stones.

This could really be a bond between a warhorse for the masses and still a song to please the fans.

It sounded great on VL and BTB tours. On Licks it was bad. Hopefully they'll bring it back but only if Keith actually plays the intro properly on guitar instead of relying on piano and backing singers.

Pull out Lisa for another tune & make Mich stand still
& play his harmonica, no strut whatsoever.

Yes - the intro has to be improved, like it used to be. This could be a killer intro. Keith should do it like he did on his solo tour.

I could live with him singin'; but then again I might be the only one here?
(Well, one or two more?)... B-stage? And Jagger w/ focus on harmonica.

Gimme Shelter is one of my very favourite Stones songs... and an official Song That Cannot Be Played Too Loud. Dread hearing it on the radio while I'm driving - should have been killed years ago!

My curious side wants to hear it live. My purist side wants to remember it from Let it Bleed, the perfect recording of the song. My curious side usually wins, tho... not always a good thing! winking smiley

Second on the list would be Let it Bleed. And Around and Around, which they didn't rehearse for this leg, so guess I am beat there.

Only thing for it is to see as many shows as possible, up the odds of hearing your picks. This gets expensive. Forget Gimme Shelter - gimme a tax shelter!!!

It wasn't all it could have been on Licks, I agree, but for me even a weak Gimme Shelter is worth having in the setlist. It's that great.

SomeTorontoGirl : don't worry about seeing it live - judging by how the stones are playing this tour, you won't be disapointed if you do see it live. It was always one of the highlights for me on previous tours. I just think that Licks tour was generally very poor due to a combination of the sound men mixing the guitars down too much and Ron (and to a lesser extent, Keith's) playing being poor (Euro leg).

When they play it with guts and energy it is just great. Have a listen to the Stripped version - nothing wrong with that!

I disagree - Licks was so disappointing for this song. It was used as the first song back from the B stage which meant they did a weird piano intro whilst the slowly posed their way back to the main stage, Keith coming last and not playing a note until they hit the first verse. That is not Gimme Shelter to me - it is another song if it doesn't have the intro.

Is that the Stripped version of Let it Bleed? Or is there a stripped version of Gimme Shelter? It's not on my Stripped disc? Either way, you've convinced me! (See - the curiosity always wins!)

I don´t miss it, since Keith don´t play anything close to the original, wich is at least played by 6-8 guitars.

I think they do a good job on it still, the low point was steel wheels tour. But on all the recent tours its still has a heavy gituar sound. the stripped companion is really good. No security and Live licks are not to shabby.

Oh... Thanks! Never heard it. How do I track that down?

I think the BTB version is the best since 1973.

Its on a compilation called "stripped companion". I dont know who has it... you could inquire on "Hot Stuff". I found the single used at a music store.

The last time they wowed me with GS was from the Live At The 10 Spot from '97. The track eventually went on the No Security album.

actually the version from shanghai on The Biggest Bang is excellent, i did not like the licks version i agree, B2B was good too, nowadays keith does the intro like he should, no extended piano and oooOOOooooOOO's from Lisa, now its a short sweet, and totally rockin version, very powerful

IMO a lot of great versions of Gimme Shelter exists, but I think by far the best version is the one from Let it Bleed.
