You can play any minor chord with two fingers in open G, 5 string guitar. Ring finger barred over string 5,4,3, and middle finger on string 2, and mute string 1 with this grip. I wouldn't be surprised if Keith did this in the past.
Of course there are beautiful inversions.

I've never thought about it that way. I just figured it out. Then applied it to whatever. It's essentially playing an A minor barred. It's challenging but not difficult. Keith laid a number on it for the SNL performance with some janks!

Or play the Eminor like he did in Before They Make Me Run: full bar on the Emajor, add the G note with your pinky, G-string, 12th fret.
