Chuck Berry in Holland
Posted by: bart-man ()

Chuck Berry will visit Holland for a concert on Noverber 13, in 013 Tilburg. I've seen him a few years ago when he was touring with Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.

Athough he is a living legend, I don't know I should go.

Anyone seem him recenty performing?

I've never seen him live. I get your point if it would be wise to go but he, a legend like Berry you should have seen at least once in your live espescially if you are a stones fan. So maybe i'll be diddapointed if his perfomance will be a bit weak but at least i've seen him once. Thanks for the info!

Cheers,
Wuudy

I saw him several times over the last 10 years. Was OK until about 5 yrs ago but now he is really embarrassing. Sad. I would not go.

Saw Chuck a couple of times in the 1980s. A businesslike performance but, as has been said, definitely worth seeing – particularly if you’re a Stones fan. But he’s 80/81 now so I wouldn’t expect too much. A short set I think. His band is usually a pretty straightforward affair.

The thing with Chuck Berry shows is: you just get as drunk as he is, and you\'ll have a blast. If he\'s sober, you only have a couple of beers. If everything\'s out of tune and he can\'t remember the words, just start pouring the Bacardi, and you\'ll leave completely satisfied.

I saw him in 2004 at the Royal festival hall in london and he was brilliant. Does anyone know if he has a website or if there is one that features his up to date tour dates?

Chuck Berry doesn't drink. He hates alcohol and drunk people.

I dunno either. Once in a while, he ventures out to California or Florida and random cities across the country but nothing guaranteed like his monthly st. louie gigs.

One thing for sure...perhaps he appreciates the respect and response from overseas audiences than here in the US? I mean, the guy can still sell out arenas and large theaters over there. That and probably promoters aren't aware how important and relevant Chuck is...simply grouping him as an oldies act like Chubby Checker or something.

His management should do a better job in promoting him and having him tour...Willie Nelson is still kicking and constantly tours...they're almost the same age. But the difference...Willie can guarantee a pretty good show without any flubs....Chuck can't...

Almost the same age? ;-)

Willie Nelson was 74 this April (I believe?) and Chuck will be 81 later this year. I do believe that 7 years mean a lot at that age - it's not like the difference between 31 and 38 ;-)

I last saw Chuck Berry in 1998 and he was faultless. Not so on his current/recent European tour - as far as I've heard?? Still - if he was playing I'd make an effort to go see him ;-)

But - we all see how Jagger defies age at almost 64......but how much will he be able to do in 7 years?? (He'll probably still be running around like one of those battery bunnies *lol*)

Ok! Very different opinions here. Idont just want to se a legend,is he able to play and perform in an average way at least? Rockman have you seen him live or on video lately? Hes in Sweden right now,and a Swedish rocker Nisse Hellberg is joining him, might be worth it for him hes good.

It´s like a roller-coaster to see him. Sometimes playing the right chords and singing the right song, sometimes completely out of it. Take it for what it is, an old legend still on the road, but don´t expect too much.

Is it easy to get something signed? I saw Bo Diddley a couple of years ago and he was very friendly and patient. He signed a lot and you where manage to take some pics.

He played in Sweden a couple of days ago as a part of a package tour with Status Quo and a Swedish act. According to the reviews I`ve read he was a total disaster.

I'm curious if Chuck, passing 80 these days, is still up to his old antics; When he use to play gigs, he would use local talent for a back up band and for every mistake he heard, he would deduct it from their pay. He would also change the key of the songs he played at the last minute to try and stump the band on purpose. Thus a bigger payday for Chuck.

okay, here is my chuck contribution -
i saw chuck about 2 years ago at a seated theater in Rome. The show started out kind of slow, in the sense that, every once in a while a few people near the front would jump out of their seats and start to dance at the stage, and some older ladies dressed in theater uniforms would rush over and scold them and make them sit down. then after a few songs, chuck played a really huge hit, and suddenly there was this big spontaneous crowd at the stage to dance ! nuthin violent or pushy, just right smiling smiley if i remember correctly, Chuck's whole band was pretty young, including his son on guitar and his daughter singing backup.

As for Chuck himself, I was at the stage too and could look up and see his face very well - for a few moments I thought I could notice his "far-away eyes", but really, he was full of energy and he played great and really effortlessly. And once in a while he'd just throw in some bs tuneless riff somewhere, but he had this sort of happy devil who-gives-a-sh-t grin on his face as if to say, “hey - I did that on purpose, and it sounds great don’t it!”. But it DID sound great smiling smiley Then of course for the last song they/he picked out all the cutie 20-year-old girls they saw and invited them all up on stage to shake it (gee, I wasn’t invited, oh well ;-)

So anyway, this was a couple years ago when he was 79 – I hope he hasn’t gone so downhill from then…I don’t know if I’d go see him again at this point, but I think if you’ve never seen him you might want to go for it, ‘cause you’ll probably feel sorry when it’s too late...!

Chuck will not go out of his way to sign. Depends on his mood.
