It is a real disgrace.
I was yesterday enjoying the concert. Never could imagine this can happen.

The 2nd part is that according some news the works have been stopped by safety reasons and by the judge in charge.

Jun 29, 1:02 PM EST

The Associated Press

MADRID, Spain -- Two workers dismantling a Rolling Stones' stage at a stadium in Madrid fell to their deaths from a metal scaffold on Friday, officials said.

Two other Spanish workers were injured in the accident at the Vicente Calderon stadium, one critically. Police said three of the workers fell about 30 feet from the scaffold, and landed on the fourth worker.

The Rolling Stones, currently on the European leg of their A Bigger Band world tour, performed in the Vicente Calderon soccer stadium in the Spanish capital Thursday night. They are due to play in the southern town of El Eijido this weekend.

The dead workers were identified as Benno Goldewijk, 44, of the Netherlands, and Alfredo Pecina Matias, 38, of Spain, said Javier Ayuso, a spokesman for Madrid's emergency rescue service said.

Stones' sadness at workers deaths

The Rolling Stones sent out a message of condolence today after two workers died while dismantling their stage in Madrid.

The pair were killed after a large metal structure, 33ft high, is thought to have collapsed on them.

Two local stage hands were also injured in the accident and are in hospital.
The band performed in the Vicente Calderon football stadium in the Spanish capital last night.

The two who died are an employee of the Belgian-based construction company Stage Co and a local stage hand.

The Rolling Stones issued a statement saying: "The fatal accident occurred during the dismantling of The Rolling Stones stage, following a concert given by the group the evening before.

"The Rolling Stones, who were informed of the tragedy this afternoon, were deeply saddened by the news.

"Their heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery go out to the injured and their profound sympathies to the families of the deceased."

Has it been determined what the exact cause of the accident was?

I watched disc 2 of Biggest Bang last night for the first time. They showed the construction of the Rio stage and there was a platform that broke under the weight that was put on it. It looked like they just patched it up and re-used it with the same weight on it.

Given the Stones' history of thousands of shows over the years with relatively few people getting hurt, I would say they have a good record in that regard. But after watching the DVD last night, it makes me wonder a bit.

It was not a structure failure but a human error.

I read the judge had stopped the works until conclude the legal investigation.

Yes, bad news indeed. I'm sorry for the families.

In 1994, didn't a big "jumbo tron" (or something?) collapse in Washington DC? Luckily, no one was under it. I think it was in DC, 1994.

Although the stage people are professionals and know what they are doing, I often look at the Stones stages and wonder if everything is secured alright.

To my knowledge, prior to this incident, no one has ever beem seriously injured or killed while assembling/disassembling a Stones stage.

Lets hope & pray this doesn't happen agian.
