Keith - So overrated!
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()
Date: June 18, 2007 16:28

Let's look at the evidence:

JJF - Wyman's riff

Brown Sugar - All Jagger

Last Time - Stolen from the Staple Singers

Satisfaction - 3 note riff, made great only by Stu gettting a fuzzbox, Charlie's drumming, and Mick's lyrics.

Honky Tonk Women - stolen from Ry Cooder

Start Me Up - re-tread of the same old open-G I-IV chord change.

Most all the rest - stolen Muddy, Cropper, and Berry licks

I'll give the man credit, he steals from the best. Without Jagger, he'd be on the dole playing in London bars.

Don't forget all the credits for a bunch of songs that Mick Taylor and Brian Jones deserved, but never got. LOL!!!

You forgot It's Only Rock N' Roll. It's all Chuck Berry!

I'm taking this is a joke but still, there is Street Fighting Man, Gimme Shelter, Tumbling Dice, Bitch, All Down The Line, You Got Me Rocking, Rocks Off, Happy, SFTD (on bass, but still his riff), Paint It Black, Shattered among many others of course.

And what about Wild Horses stolen from Gram!

Here's the truth: Keith wrote about five-six songs in the whole Rolling Stones history: Infamy, Winning Ugly, Where the boys go, back to zero and maybe Hearts for sale.

LOL!

Yep, Gram should get credit for all the country flavored ones. No cowboys and hillbillies in Kent.

Truth? I heard that Keith stole Infamy from The Cure, Winning Ugly from Joe Cocker, Where The Boys Go from Some Girls, Back To Zero from Duran Duran and Hearts For Sale from my band. However, all is forgiven because he's a nice chap!

Honky Tonk Woman stolen from the great Hank Williams. Ry Cooder is just another theft , a skilled one like the great Keith Richards.Personally I disagree with you,he is rated as he should as a great and dedicated musician who created The Rolling Stones. I don't want to imagine what would have been the Stones without Keith! Another Rod Stewart act! It is strange to me that people are questionning Keith Richards status as a great musician. He is not a flashy musician but he wrote so many good songs by himself or with Mick or Ron or others. He came up with great riffs and on stage he invented lots of the poses and moves that still nowaday rockers are using. Isn't that enough to be considered a great musician? To me, it is.

That means he's a great model. Maybe they can play "Vogue" when they come onstage.

My friends, i'm delighted to read this thread. It really means that nobody is serious around which is a great thing. You know... It's only rock'n'roll...

A few years ago, Steve Vai played in Bucharest in front of a crowd which included a lot of rock musicians; I said then that in the audience there where ten guitarists better than Steve Vai.

.... but I like It...

...but out of all those "stolen riffs & licks" he created a SOUND!!
from all guitar players you can hear HIS guitar sound.
and this sound is stolen by...
soundtrack of our lives, oasis, ac/dc, black crows among others...

I've heard from a very realiable source close to the Stones that he really can't play the guitar, it's all a mimic!

Oh no this was actually Ron Wood. It was even recording in a Ron Wood version before the Stones version.

and his bass line and guitar solo from Sympathy for the Devil are very overrated. Brian Jones contributed much more!

Didn't Brian Jones contribute to Rough Justice?

Re: Keith - So overrated!

Everyone needs influences. Indeed Mr. Elmo Lewis, did Brian Jones not manipulate that name from a slide-guitarist of the blues variety? Many people on this board would interpret THAT as a shocking theft!

Keith may have stolen Muddy licks, but you don't think Muddy came up with all that himself, do you? Surely SOME of Waters' work came from guys like SOn House and Charley Patton. I'm pretty sure they 'stole' things too.

And that same old 'open-G I-IV chord change' you refer to. What about the 'same old' 12-bar used by Berry and Muddy; is that immune from your statement?

Okay, it was just a joke. Several on here (those with a sense of humor, not just a sense of superiority) figured that out. Indeed, I love the riff-meister as much as anyone. Hell, he's the reason we're all here. Just showing in my own way that some of the criticism of Keith is a little too harsh.

I went to see John Lee Hooker shortly before his death. He rarely played and had two other guitarists taking up the slack. No one complained. We all knew we were in the presence of greatness and should enjoy it while we could. I did.

KR himself says there is only one song, everything else is a variation - back to the cave men. Every musician steals/borrows/is influenced by someone.

Brian made up the name Elmo Lewis because he thought it sounded like the name of an authentic Delta bluesman.

Keith's touch, timing, and the unique way that he made Open-G all his own will never be equalled. Please enjoy the man while ya can. The day is coming (very rapidly, it seems) when you won't be able to go see The Rolling Stoes.

I see and apologise. I could not be arsed to read the responses of others.
