Some time ago there was a rumour that Claude Nobs had negotiated with the Stones about an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This place would have been a great setting for an intimate concert with rather obscure material (including a live recording)! And of course they could also have asked some special guests to sit in with them. This would have been something special!

Do you think they did not want to take the trouble to rehearse? Or where do you see the reasons?

A very good idea. It'll be actual in the year 2012.

The venue is fanstastic,but its way too small,the stage is very narrow, doesnt suit the size of the Stones entourage. Howver if they stripped it down it would be great. Its the best place to make live recordings, there are lot of amazing filmed concerts there. REM springs instantly to mind.

As I know Claude Nobs, he is interested in having them, but for several reason they are so so about it:
- stage to small
- Mick always said this is a jazz festival and they are not playing jazz... :-(!
- they are still too young to play in Montreux! :-)!
- imagine how crazyy will be Montreux for "THE" Day!!! just a mess in this pretty small town!!!
- the only way they could come is: during the special guest night... surprise surprise! they almost did it in 2003..., but don't worry not this year... they are already playing in Lausanne for the Migros Concert!

_ just wait 3-4 years, when Mick will be more quiet on stage!

Even Alice Cooper played a fantastic show at the Montreux Jazz Festival though I find it a bit odd that he's playing there.

I think The Charlie Watts Quintet would make more sense. The Stones would ruin the festival.

Hardly. Van Morrison was playing Montreux while still in his 20's!

Is it called the Montreaux Jazz & Blues Festival? If it is, I guess they could fit into the "blues" category.

Alice Cooper is neither Jazz nor Blues.

The festival doesn't necessarily have to do with Jazz and old geezers.
I saw the Specials and other ska & punk bands there......in the 80ies, that was....

The Stones £1,000,000 fee might have something to do with it...

Last weekend BBC4 showed a good multi-part documentary "They All Came Out To Montreux" about the life of Claude Nobs and the Montreux Jazz Festival. There were some short testimonials from Keith referring to his stay in Montreux (?) in the 70s and his friendship with Claude Nobs to whom he paid homage. There was some footage with Muddy Waters and ZZ Top and various other greats. It is amazing that most of the Montreux Jazz Festival concerts have been filmed, recorded, digitised and archived.

Unfortunately Claude Nobs will not be able to book them anymore because he died a few years ago.

Nowadays it would not make sense anymore but it could have been a great idea back in 1995 when they did the club shows. But perhaps they were just not into rehearsing new material...
