I don't think they'd do JJF as the second song. It's too big.

"Come On" would be perfect or "Route'66".
It's a pity that they didn"t rehearse pre 1968 material!

That's exactly right! During earlier tours they were very creative with their openings:

- 1975 Steel drums/Honky tonk women
- 1978 Now the lofty trumpet sounds (Haendel)/Let it Rock [Anaheim]
- 1981/82 Take the A-train/Under my thumb
- 1989/90 Continental drift/Start me up

Thoese were events, really! I don't know why they have become so careless about the openings nowadays.

Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Jumping Jack Flash, Paint it Black, It's Only Rock'n'Roll and You Got Me Rocking have all been used as the opening song on the ABB tour. If Rolling Stones are predictable now, what were they in 1969,70,71,72,73,75,76,78,80,81,89,90?

Hope its not Start Me Up again. The last 10 or so times I saw them this was the opener, and its way too obvoius and cheesy to be the opener. In the 70s they were very good and careful about how they opened shows each tour and varied it up. Actually I should include 82 and 94 cause they really surprised me with UMT and Not Fade Away.

Should have been more clear, what I meant was going to shows these days you can almost guarentee what songs will appear where in the set each tour. Besides the few numbers in the say 4 to 7 slots in the set.
Remember how surprised everyone was in London when they did YCAGWYW in the middle of the set rather than as an encore.

It was first with Licks tour they really started to change the set list from concert to concert. The opening song had been standard and regular for about all shows on a tour before Licks.

it's the whole 'Bigger Bang' theory - with musical creativity waning, they figure a series of explosions is just as good.

it isn't.

Since Paint It Black is often the best song in the set, opening with it just might make the rest of the show anti-climatic.

For the UK shows I think it should be Satifaction.

It wasn't the opener on the delayed BTB shows and I think the last time it was an opener was at Knebworth 31 years ago and before that probably 1965/6 !

A nice fat guitar sound like on VL with KR on a Les Paul would be awesome !

They did Satisfaction for B2B tour in Europe. And changed between SMU, SFM and BS on the Licks tour. In London 99 they opened with JJF.
