an art gallery is offering me Forty Licks (paper) for around $4,300 - 4,500 USD. including a new frame, shipping which would run about 150, etc, all included in the price.

I see it on the net for 7,500 - 8,500, one gallery quoted me 6,500.

The obvious thing "duh, buy it."

Why might a gallery sell it for so low? Would you have any concerns?

Yes, a friend of my brother's used to work for them and she called them, asking for their "drop dead price." But still.

And I assume the price will only go up, 290 prints made of this paper edition.

Buy it and make sure you get a certicate of authenticity. That is a great price for that piece.

The mark-up is large but I am surprised it is that low. WHere is the gallery?

Maybe that particular gallary has been sitting on it too long and just want to move it?

The minimum prices for first sales are supposed to be controlled by Ronnie's manager so that galleries do not undercut each other. If you are buying on EBAY through an individual that's a different matter. I don't recall the exact pricing, but it seems over the initial official asking price for paper, and about the original canvas price. Perhaps the market for resales has gone up do to limit supply on the market.

I wouldn't be as blunt as Kartoffelsalat, but I don't think that Woody is a great artist.

It probably doesn't have much value as a piece of art.

I disagree, I really like his stuff. I have Conversation Piece and Flat Bed and they are great.

The suggested retail on forty Licks is currnetly $8500 US.

Woody has the same acquired skill as most any first year illustration student painting from (other people's) photographs. Art it is NOT.

What do you mean? And it is from a reputable gallery. The brother of the owner had two of them in his home and for whatever reason decided to sell one. He brought it in from his home after the inquiry went out from my brother's friend/former employee of the gallery.


Well, I admit I like it because the subject is the Stones and it is BY one of the Stones. I know zip about art. And it is signed by Ronnie.

But the quality of his work as art is not really what I am asking.

And my guess is that it will continue to go up in value, even after they are no longer playing.

I also like it because I love that "end of the show, veni,vidi, vici (prob misspelled the Latin), I came, I saw, I conquered, triumphant tone, and I love it every show where I see them do this on stage.

I think that if you can afford it, and it means something to you, well, buy it.

I am quite sure you will never sell it anyway, unless, of course, and I hope not, you NEED to sell it - but in that case, no matter what the market quotation is, you will never get back your money.

I do not agree with who thinks that Ronnie's pictures are no art. For sure they wouldn't have the quotations they have if the painter wasn't ron-wood-from-the-rollingstones, but the guy has depth, and he was able to translate it also on the canvass. Technique by itself - as in music - means nothing.

I mean that the difference bewteen what the gallery buys it for from Ronnie's distributor and what the suggested retail price is leaves a fair bit of room for profit. But, in this case, the price is much lower than the suggested retail price of $8500. I believe this one is sold out so it could be, as you say, that it was bought early in the release when the price was lower and the dealer is still making a profit but could make much more. The price rises as more units of the release sells.

What state is the dealer in?

Ronnie's art is like his guitar playing...derivative, lacking in imagination and ideas and ultimately soulless. Only is drawing/paintings have more technique than his playing. If it wasn't Ron Wood (of the Rolling Stones) doing a painting of Eric Clapton (or whomever), few would be interested.
