Hi Erik! It was the Earls Court bootleg that I particularly had in mind, and although at the time of the gigs themselves, I'd have sworn blind that they were of no comparison to any of those that I'd witnessed three years earlier, I am very much minded these days, to think differently.
It's all down to personal opinions of course, but IMHO the band itself is leaner, tighter and more focused, with Dylan's vocals never more passionate or committed, as he delivers what I would aver to be definitive versions of Mr Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like A Woman, Simple Twist of Fate, Maggies Farm and Love Minus Zero. Try and take some time out this week to sit down and compare these with the 1978 versions, and I would bet that the experience will surprise you!
As for the religious material, I cannot help but be blown away by Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe in You, Man Gave Names to the Animals, Dead Man, Lenny Bruce and In The Summertime, while the contributions by the other band members such as Saved by the Grace and Walking Around in Heaven are absolutely incredible!
Present company excepted, I am still of the opinion that the great man had been pre-judged by many, on the basis of events leading up to the tour, placing Dylan on a sure hiding to nothing. If the increasingly overt religious content of his albums was already bad enough for many of his more casual fans, then the spectacular re-appearance of the Boss on UK shores had rendered him almost old hat. To many, he had become "the old Springsteen".
Listening to these shows outside of this context places them in a light that was never shone on them at the time.
Well worth a considered re-visit!
