I actually think that Rob Tyner in the days of MC5 did the same once.

some warm up acts I've seen booed include Toots and The Maytalls, and The B-52's......as for main act The Marshall Tucker Band (because they wimped out and left the stage after a little rain.......it was outdoors)

Who boos the B-52s, for cryin' out loud!?!?

They don't pretend to be anything they're not. Just a party band, and a great one at that.

that wasnt the one where the place was full of Stones fans as rumours had got around that it was going to be one of their secret 'commando raid' gigs prior to the '82 tour, was it?

Correct - and contrary to myth, a lot of the booing at Newport was actually because a) the band were so bloody loud and b) the show was so short (about 5-6 songs)

Eric Burdon in Hannover/Germany 1988.

He presented his new album (can't even remember the name),played some new songs which nobody wanted to hear and after a while the band started a few chords of "House of the Rising Sun".

They suddenly stopped playing (the audience left with goose-pimples) and Burdon announced: "I can't stand this old shit anymore".

The crowd went wild and threw everything on the stage which wasn't nailed to the floor (actually nobody waste a thought on booeing).

Yep, and also because the audience couldn't hear Bob's vocals, as the bass and guitars were way too loud. In the recordings one can hear the instruments sounding like big ships crashing into oneanother.
I think the "booing" started when people were shouting "TURN UP THE VOCALS", and people further in the back thought they too should join the something.
Maybe the whole 65/66 concert booing wouldn't have happened to such an extent, unless the papers wrote about "the booing when Dylan went electric"
Just like the Sex Pistols audience...they've read that they were expected to spit at Pistols, and showed up just to do so....at least when they played in Norway 1977

Hmm, well, I went to one of the Dylan gigs in '81 during his Jesus period, and although I don't remember booing, I can recall it being really dull. Only my second Dylan gig - the first one was Blackbushe. First gig absolutely brilliant, second pretty crap. I've seen Bob about a dozen times over the years and the gigs tend to be one or the other! Can anyone suggest a boot that shows how great the 81 tour was, cos I don't remember it that way.

I also went to one of the PF Wall gigs at Earl's Court - June 17th 1981. Don't remember a reaction to the uniforms, but that was almost certainly another night.

1981 can't compeat with 1978-1980, IMO
Some shows 81 were brilliant, but some were a bit dull, I suppose you can say. I was just listening to the Birmingham 81 shows, and also Basel 1981, and there's not much energy there. My favourite from 81 is also the first one I got "A Bird's Nest In Your Hair" from London June 29th. The soundboard recording "Avignon" is also worth checking out.

The Scandinavian shows from that summer were particularly good. Theres lots of good European shows available from that summer.

Can understand the shows being seen as a bit of anti-climax at the time after the highs of summer 1978 (which IMO rank with the best shows he ever played) but on the evidence of the recordings those shows were pretty good.

The San Francisco shows from November 1980 are the highlights of that gospel era though IMO

Yes! Strange you mentioned it, as I've been listening to those shows again and again the last week.

Hi Erik! It was the Earls Court bootleg that I particularly had in mind, and although at the time of the gigs themselves, I'd have sworn blind that they were of no comparison to any of those that I'd witnessed three years earlier, I am very much minded these days, to think differently.

It's all down to personal opinions of course, but IMHO the band itself is leaner, tighter and more focused, with Dylan's vocals never more passionate or committed, as he delivers what I would aver to be definitive versions of Mr Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Just Like A Woman, Simple Twist of Fate, Maggies Farm and Love Minus Zero. Try and take some time out this week to sit down and compare these with the 1978 versions, and I would bet that the experience will surprise you!

As for the religious material, I cannot help but be blown away by Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe in You, Man Gave Names to the Animals, Dead Man, Lenny Bruce and In The Summertime, while the contributions by the other band members such as Saved by the Grace and Walking Around in Heaven are absolutely incredible!

Present company excepted, I am still of the opinion that the great man had been pre-judged by many, on the basis of events leading up to the tour, placing Dylan on a sure hiding to nothing. If the increasingly overt religious content of his albums was already bad enough for many of his more casual fans, then the spectacular re-appearance of the Boss on UK shores had rendered him almost old hat. To many, he had become "the old Springsteen".

Listening to these shows outside of this context places them in a light that was never shone on them at the time.

Well worth a considered re-visit!

I saw Prince (who now is megaster headliner) get his ass booed off stage opening for the Stones in Los Angeles '81.

The only other nasty booing situation I've witnessed was at a Clash concert in '79.
Reggae star Mikey Dread was the opener. Angry punks in the crowd began booing until Joe Strummer and Mick Jones
came out onstage disguised in trenchcoats and sunglasses, and began dancing onstage to Mikey's music.

Logie, thanks for the suggestions, but I've spent a lot of time with the 1978 shows, and they are superior to just about anything else...even to the 1981 shows. Some 81 shows are still great thou' !... even if they seem pale compared to the first mentioned tour.

was at Wembley Stadium for U2's 'Zooropa' tour in 1993.
Bono was consistently booed and told to 'get on with it',
in no uncertain terms, during the show.
The booing and disenchantment reached a crescendo, when Bono brought on stage, Salman Rushdie, and introduced him to the audience.
....i left shortly afterwards.

The Polyphonic Spree

[en.wikipedia.org]

Although not the main act when I saw them with David Bowie a few years ago, there were dozens in the audience that got up and waited outside for Bowie to come on. According to someone sitting next to me who saw the show in Philadelphia, they were harassed so loudly in Philly that Bowie was compelled to come out during their set and berate the audience.

Never saw a main act booed, but I did see half of Madison Square Garden empty out after the "support act" finished.

Summer of '91, me and a bunch of friends wentr to see the Replacements open for Elvis Costello at MSG. Not only did the 'Mats (as an opening act) play an encore (they all switched instruments and played Hootenanny - amazing), but after they finished their set, there was a mass exodus from the Garden. By the time Costello came on, the place ws literally half empty.

One of the most unique concert experiences I've had.

The two I remember was: Dave Mason opened for: the Steve Miller Band

Dave blew Mr. Miller away and the crowd basically walked out on him, well more
than 50%.

Same thing with a show that opened with Golden Earring (Radar Love)
then these fools placed a new artist "Robin Trower" next, then the headliner:
Spooky Tooth - 80% of the crowd walked out on that one, after Trower..

I was in front of the stage when Dr. Hook opened for someone, Someone said:
play some music, the guitarist said: what do you think we just did. the response
from the guy in thr crowd was: @#$%& You... didn't hear much from the guitarist
anymore.

It happened to me twice.
First time was Jane's Addiction in 1990 in Milano.
Right before Three Days Perry Farrel gave a short speech to the crowd:
"Hello Milano, I love Italy. I love your clothes, love you wine, love your women and love your mafia".
As soon as he pronounced the word "mafia" the crowd started booing so loud he had to apologize.

Another time, 1991, The Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing Italy for the very first time to a sold out arena, on the heels of Blood Sugar Sex Magic's success.
The had Henry Rollins opening for them who gave the most intense performance I've ever seen. Nobody knew the guy and everybody cheered.
Then came on the Chilis and John Frusciante was so f**ked-up on heroin he played like s**t.
The crowd booed him off-stage and two weeks later he was out of the band.
