Pirate's & Gypsy's....what a band smiling smiley

"LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Ronnie Wood has been given a Romany gypsy caravan for his 60th birthday.

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie woke up to find the £40,000 traditional painted caravan parked in his drive, left there as a surprise from his wife Jo.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Ronnie rolled out of the house in the morning and burst out laughing when he saw it. He's delighted with the caravan.

"He has Romany gypsy roots and always said he wanted one."

The ageing rocker joked he might even take the caravan on tour this summer.

The source added: "The Stones are playing the Isle of Wight Festival in the summer so he'll have a perfect chance to give it a good road test."

Ronnie, who turns 60 on June 1, was born to Romany gypsy parents and spent some of his childhood living on tugboats.

Former model Jo married Ronnie in 1985. The couple have two children together - Leah and Tyrone - and both have one child from previous relationships.

He?? Wood a Romany Gipsy? A first for me. Wasn't he from a typical English working class background? His father's name "Arthur Wood" doesn't sound Romany to me...

Talk about too much money and not knowing what to do with it unless Ronnie takes it on the road. Didn't Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance have a lifestyle like that

It crossed my mind that there might be some ulterior motive in that gift.
Jo might occasioanally suggest that he sleep in it ;^)

"Ronnie Wood, of the Rolling Stones, was born in 1947 in Middlesex, England, a descendent from a long line of Romany Boat people, into a musical and artistic family, His brothers, Art and Ted and later Ron too, would pass the time by drawing, thought by their dad, Arthur, Art, now a successful commercial artist comments, “Dad didn’t have any training but he had a natural fair for drawing." By the time Ron arrived drawing and painting were already a firmly established par of our family and our growing up.”

In the South Bank TV show from 2004, Ronnie talks about his family all being "water gypsies".

coming from gypsy background myself and being born in a wagon here in denmark in 1969
I love that story about ronnie I never nown that Ronnie also has a gypsy background

maybe thats why I always liked him so much- LOL

and there is nothing like gypsy guitarplaying

while other family´s maybe watch tv or are playing family games in the evening
my family allways played music and sang there hearts out

music is a BIG part of the gypsy´s its running in there veins

It comes complete with a Cher imitator who sings "Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves" three times daily.

The "water gypsies" were the families who worked and lived on the narrowboats on English canals in the 19th and early 20th century, making their living from carrying bulk goods (often coal or pottery). A working narrowboat looked like this:

The family lived in the tiny cabin at the stern of the boat - about the size of the gypsy caravan and usually brightly painted with traditional folk art, and a working narrowboat was always on the move up and down the huge network of British canals.

My mother, who was brought up in Brentford in the 1920's, remembered huge numbers of canal boats on the Grand Union Canal there - the canal people had the same sort of rough reputation as gypsies: they were always on the move and their children didn't get to school very often. Working canal boats were gradually killed off by road transport and most narrowboats are floating holiday homes these days - so I suppose lots of the former canal families would have settled down in areas near the canal (which is where Ronnie's childhood home of Hillingdon is).

Some of the "water gypsies" (but not all by any means) were also real Gypsies of Romani descent, and Ronnie certainly looks the part!

the Brits call a lot of people gypsies for their lifestyle. Nothing to do with ethnic background. I don't think Ron looks much like a gypsy, really, black hair alone doesn't do that. His other features aren't very gypsy-like, at least when I compare them with the Romany people I've seen in Finland, Sweden and Hungary. But then again, I don't claim any knowledge of the wood's genealogy, I just wouldn't crown Ronnie a Romany King yet winking smiley

"[These] are my parents," [Ronnie] says, indicating a work depicting barges in Paddington Basin. "Because I come from the canal barges." Suddenly it all fits into place: this wiry man with his deep-brown gypsy eyes, wild dark hair and charming smile, this archetypal rock'n'roll outlaw, is descended from a long line of Romany boat people.

"I was one of the first to be born on dry land," Wood elaborates three days later, when the restless Stone can be pinned down for a proper interview at his house in Kingston upon Thames. "All of my family, right back to the 1700s — as far as I've traced them so far — have been on the barges, as navigators or helmsmen or whatever." His father, Arthur, was born on a barge called the Antelope; his mother, Elizabeth, on the Orient. They worked for a contractor called Sabey & Co, hauling timber and other products up and down the canals between London, Manchester and Stratford-upon-Avon. "During the war my dad never had to go through his national service, because he was transporting the raw materials to build the tanks and artillery." Though the Wood family had settled on terra firma by the time Ronnie was born (on June 1, 1947, in Hillingdon, Middlesex), his father stayed in touch with the barge people. "When I was very young, he'd take me fishing on the canals and we'd go and see his pals on the boats. I remember lunches down in the cabin, with condensed milk. I remember the beautiful, murky smell down there, and the engines going, just travelling along the canals."
