I am listening to Hendrix and was thinking that this was one of the few times I remember reading where Jagger gave an unconditional thumbs up to someone. Said that he dug Hendrix from the second he saw him. Who else does Jagger like? Wasn't there something with Sade?
"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
I ones saw an interview with Mick Jagger where they show his favorite songs/clips only remember the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (can't recall the song though)

Double Trouble certainly supported The Stones on shows in North America 1981.
The Stones dug Hendrix from the Cafe Wha? days, when Linda Keith (K's gf) pretty much discovered him, and he & the Stones seemed to have considerable mutual respect...I was listening to the "First Rays/South Saturn Delta" stuff and he was as great - maturing as a songwriter, too - as he'd ever been, at least in the studio. I know he was tired of the tour grind. Mick always had great things to say about Don Covay too, whose See Saw/Mercy! 2-fer is classic - evidently features Hendrix on some trax btw, pre Exp.

I remember seeing a MTV show which had Mick showing his favourite artists, and that show contained a video of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and the song was Give it Away
re LK: Everyone has their blind spots. Otherwise, of course he gave a big boost to Living Colour, dug (Bernard, Adrian Sherwood, Wimbish, etc) Tackhead enough to appear on their "Strange Things" cd which must have sold at least 50 or 60 copies back in '90.
I know that Mick enjoys Tina Turner, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and Sade . I'd love to know if there are contemporary artists that his children have turned him on to! He's pretty open-minded and I bet he listens to all kinds of music so he can get ideas for his solo cd and for the Stones. I remember reading long ago that Hendrix really did knock his socks off, yes, during the Cafe Wha days! Seeing Hendrix made McCartney and Clapton and Townsend nearly quit the biz!!

wasn´t it on MTV?
"Give It Away", and he chose ZZ Top´s "Rough Boy", what I can´t really understand.
in terms of mick's opinions, there's a huge difference between artists around before the stones, and after. he's very generous with praise with those who came before him, fairly stingly with those after. he seems to like funky rock the best (little feat, mink deville, living colour), so the chili peppers aren't such a surprise, but they were huge by the time he noticed them.

It was and the song as you said yourself 'Give it Away'

He liked Mick Jagger, but I´ve read that there was a rivalry over a woman, Devon Wilson, that hampered their relation in the late sixties. Listen to Dolly Dagger and you get a hint.

fascinating stuff john, tnx. didn't know there were hendrix tracks with covay! also very surprised, and actually very satisfied to know that mick has mentioned Covay; I had always looked and hoped for a reference but could never find one or hear of one till now...this, mostly because imo mick took so very much his vocal style, and even signature sound, directly from Covay's influence imo... (as much so as keith with chuck, stylistic approach & inherent part of sound; sometimes directy copy or homage) gonna track down that covay thing with hendrix...listening to his 'beginning's vinyl jam thing, not sure when recorded but before his breakthru, a jam kinda thing...and it's just so satisfying..brilliant...you could hear the 'experience' coming...he was already there, just waiting to get all the pieces together at the same time and booom....
any other background on mick and don from anyone would be greatfully appreciated, ty. __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __
(also mick has talked quite a bit about buddy holly and elvis being favorites and seminal influences...especially goes on about essentially learning songwriting from his buddy holly records...)
