Goldman could have written about Morrisson, Brian Jones or Keith without death threats because they are not saints in the same way as Lennon or Elvis. Brian Jones has crazy fans and so does Morrisson but the drugs and the dirt has always been there. Elvis was untouchable for a long time. Lennon was after he died. And he was murdered which made it impossible to suggest he wasnt just a bread baking housewife during 1975-1980.

That housewife myth is also something that mrs Ono has been very eager to maintain, along with everything else she claimes is the "real" truth about Lennon. If Goldman is the dirtdigger then Ono is surely the saintkeeper.

May PangĀ“s "Loving John" I think is an interesting book about Lennnon behind the myth.

"If it hadn't been for Jagger the Stones would have turned into a hipper version of Status Quo round about 1976 and probably fizzled out amid public indifference in the early eighties"

Very funny Nikolai & quite possibly true. Interesting info on Kent btw. I knew about the Vicious bicycle chain incident but not the rest. Did you see him on the NME doc last year? Seems he now lives in Paris & likes ridiculous hats.

Yes, I did. He also looks like a molten candle. That's the thing about ex-junkies - they always get very fat.

Indeed - there have been enough myth-breaking books about his last five years, beginning with May Pang's expose and culminating in books based on Lennon's personal diaries.

Lennon was no saint, far from it. He was a wife-beating thug. He came close to belting Linda during an argument in 1969. And - frankly - all this "man of peace" is based on what - exactly? That his most famous ant-war protest consisted of him getting into bed with Yoko Ono for a week, and Imagine - a song sung by a multi-millionaire about living without possessions. Right.

Has Keith ever talked about Nick Kent in interviews or such? Would be interesting to hear what he think or thought about Kent and the stories he wrote.

Not that I know of. Kent was ostracised from the Stones' inner circle because of the piece he wrote in 1986.

I read this book knowing nothing about Kent's past, present, or future. I must say, it was an easy and a fun read. I didn't take any of it as a history lesson, just a good way to pass the time with a cup of tea.

Indeed. You've got to admire Kent's gonzo journalism though.

Yeah but I'm a fan, I think he was great, genius really. And he didnt pretend he was a saint. He was very sincere but the fans never listened. Had he been a painter noone would have been shocked by Goldmans book.
