What Is With The Singalongs Now?

Do you guys like audience singalongs? There is a limit, I think. I can even do without the YCAGWYW singalong but I guess Jagger is a pro and he knows what he is doing. But now you got a "whoo whoo" in almost every song; if not Jagger finds a way to work one in.
Reason I ask this is because the "new" way of an audience to act at a show is to sing along. Now when I watch the girls in an audience, the way to see if a band is doing well, is to see if everyone knows the words.
There have been U2, Tom Petty shows where it is a mass choir practice.

I always sing along and I can't help it at all. I love it on YCAGWYW, but there's a limit yes. I just don't think it's reached yet.

JumpingKent, I have never been to a Stones show with you, but I was willing to bet that you sing along full throttle. smiling smiley

It's not like that really. I do it in a strange way. If you stood next to me you wouldn't even be able to hear it I think. It's more like moving my lips and singing it so low that I can hear my voice buzz in my head. When Jagger pumps up the audience to sing along, I give it full throttle though. Problem is that it sounds very bad, but with 50.000 other people singing too, my voice drowns thankfully.

I though the stuff I heard from them was very pedestrian, so no. Not really. Why do you ask?

I agree there is a limit, also it can be very annoying if the guy next to you belts out the lyrics very loudly when he actually cannot sing at all. Usually I'm that guy...

Sometimes I even scream like a girl - like when Mick came to sing Dance Pt1 with Ronnie in London...

I hate them if I'm honest.[The singalongs that is...I like the Kings of Leon]
But lots of folks obviously do find it fun...which is what counts at the end of the day, isn't it ?

ha; i have audience boots of 2000 steve earle 'transcendental blues' tour; on one of them there's this drunken fellow, singing off-key and very exuberantly loud...after awhile it becomes sorta charming in a way...so maybe i'll call off the private detective and the hit man...maybe.

it is kinda thrilling to hear everyone singing atgb at rcmh; quite charming and touching.

In my day the volume was so loud and the crowd so loaded half the time they didn't know what song was being played!

Do you think anyone
KNEW EVERY WORD
like "The sunshine bores the daylights out of me. "
in 1972?

Hate the singalongs. I think its' pretty lame. I remember reading in Stanley Booth's book about the '69 tour how Jagger was saying the Stones couldn't (wouldn't) do singalongs. And by '76 they were a regular part of the show.

I guess it's a good example of how the Stones show has changed over the years to something that's more about entertainment. At one time it was just the music and the excitement that it generated. Over the years they've added more and more of the ol' showbiz glitz and attitude ......"let's give them a good show and get them involved and make them have a good time"......

well ... indeed singalongs weren't always part of it, but
i think the Stones have always viewed themselves as entertainers -
we're the ones who have sometimes read all kinds of other layers into it.

i could live without the singalong parts, personally, but ... they know what they're doing.

Yeah that's true. But there was a time when the Stones were too cool or hip or whatever for singalongs. They've always been entertainers, even when they were young R&B crusaders. But I think the showbiz aspect of their performances became more apparent as the years went on. It was probably more apparent in '69 than it had been in '63 and more apparent in '76 than in '70.

I just really don't like the singalongs........it's one of the oldest tricks in the book. But that's what it is to me, a showbiz routine. A gimmick.

Actually, and I didn't think about this when I first read the thread, but Mick sorta tried to get a singalong going during "It's Only Rock and Roll" at some '75 shows. It never seemed to work too well though.

What about some new sing alongs and mass clapping indeed like Lady Jane
Sittin on a Fence
You gotta Move(that wos a good one)
Laugh i almost
Im a Kingbee
She s a Rainbow is great
the best singalong remains HTW but not in the fast way they play it nowadays...that superb slow ragged 78 summer version indeed...never get tired of it!

smile: maybe they started doing singalongs in hopes that the public
would be satisfied with that, rather than bellowing every word of every number.

even bigger smile: i often wondered what would happen if we all started singing along with the guitar
instead of the vocal - and then i saw a DVD where part of the crowd (was it in South America??)
was doin just that. LoFL! the band looked really confused - "what is THAT supposed to be?!"
beautiful

Picture this:

Let's hear just the girls only!
..."Come on, come on down Sweet Virginia"
...Come on, honey child, I beg of you...
Now the boys!
..."Come on, honey child you got it in you"
Everybody!
..."Got to scrape the shit right off your shoes!"
Alright!

It's like some sort of nightmare.

Never been to a McCartney concert mate? When he does Hey Jude it's exactly like that.
