I don't much about reggae, but I enjoy Keith Richards' reggae-style songs.
I also like Peter Tosh's Rolling Stones Records label LP. I actually prefer that to Bob Marley's style, for what that opinion's worth.

Well odean73 ya got a fair trip ahead of ...
The Upsetters were basically what ever band
Perry had in the studio at the time of recording....

Named after Perry's early Jamican hit The Upsetter and was
also a nod to the band Little Richard used when performing live...

It's almost a bottomless pit that's gets weirder as
decend but for starters here's three of the best to kick ya off......Good Luck

The Upsetter Collection - Trojan CDTRL 195

Yes, I always have a bottle of Appleton at the house!

I start sweating when i am down to my last 3 or 4 bottles of rum.

Re: OT: Reggae appreciation thread

My brother used to refer to my house as "the house of rum" since I always had 4,5, 6 bottles up on the cabinet.

Times have changed though, haven't been to Jamaica in 7 years since having a kid...but I'll make it back (now he wants to go though after watching all the Pirates movies!).

Yeah you're right about that.

I have the 'In Dub Confrontation' [www.allmusic.com] , and I think it's pretty amazing as well.

Sorry, I don't wanna spoil anybody's fun, but according to Eternal Thunder this is a bogus compilation! [www.upsetter.net]. The music is probably fine but the dubs are not by Lee Perry. Sadly, there are many compilations like this on the marked.

BTW, One of my favorite Lee Perry/Upsetters collections is this: [www.allmusic.com]

Tougher Than Tough is a really nice box-set which gives a overview of (nearly) all of reggaes subgengres and most important artists. A good place to start for newcomers! This was the first reggae album i bought (in 1994) which was not by Bob Marley. Sadly I think it is deleted now?

Tougher than Tough is a great sampler. I've got a couple other "anthologies" from Island records. There's some great links from the above posts, thanks. I'm in reggae heaven. Anyone planning a trip to Jamaica- I highly recommend the local Egg-nog with spiced rum.

All the rum, I want to drink it, all the whiskey too.

I think originally it was a limited edition set of a few hundred thousand. Probably hard to find now as the label it came out on is no longer in business. That other collection though on HIP-O is a close 2nd for a good overview.

And now: The great Stalag riddim. Winston Riley's Techniques cut the original, called "Stalag 17" in 1973 [www.allmusic.com]. Since than many great reggae songs has been cut on this rythm.

One of the most famous is Tenor Saw - Ring The Alarm:

Among the many other DJs who have toasted on this great rythm track are Big Youth (All Nations Bow [www.amazon.co.uk]) and Prince Far I (The Vison [www.allmusic.com]).

Check It Out!
