OT: The Police Reunion

OK, so with only a few songs actually played in front of an audience, the reunited Police are selling out shows and adding new dates.

I can see Andy and Stewart getting giddy about it all. After 25 years of relative obscurity on their own, all of a sudden it's 1982 again.

In a weird way, the reaction is almost like a Beatles or Led Zeppelin reunion.

Now, having seen that band in their 80s heyday and knowing how good they were, I'm very happy for them. IMHO, a reunion was long overdue.

However, is this a reflection of the lack of interest in live music, and an indication that the recording companies really need to get behind promoting new artists by forming more package tours, a la the 50s?

The package tours thing sounds like something...

I find it quite tasteless with the sudden 'Police-wave',
once when they were almost like undergroud and all the elder
people just shook their heads... And now the very same same
old farts will stand like FOS & watch the ageing Polices..
Like they never did anything else...
Anyway: I'm sure it'll sound allright. smiling smiley

But its a rich man's thing.
Just like Stones are nowadays.

The Police was never "underground" in their heydays, they were concidered elder people even then.

They came with something new. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Hey; some dudes in my gymnastics class even painted "The Police"
with mark pens on their tees... Not underground??

What´s underground with that? I´m sure they brushed their teeth when they got to bed with their teddybears...

We're not talkin'Exploited here.
That was not my point.

"once when they were almost like undergroud ",
I typed (& spelled wrong)...

But they put in some new elements in popular/Hit music.
This was before even I turned into reggae.

I dont know what sophisticated or mundane circles you hanged around with, Svartmer.. maybe the punk rockers shooked their heads back then, donnow,
didnt like the punkers at first: me, a semi-hillbilly from horse-race
outback utter Suburbia.. With my small perspective it was fresh.
But here's my point: it was young urban intellectualls who listened,
people born around 1962-63-64, not the old geezers... But now they do.

But I watched the same phenomenon at the Quo gig last summer...
Old people all over... Where were they in the 70s??
Quo was a kid thing back then!

I´m not sure what you mean... "Old people all over". It´s the same people I suppose. Only with grey hair.

Svartmer I reckon ya skip some lines:
"Quo was a kid thing back then!"
kids in the 70s = in their 40s now. Some grey.
grown-ups in the 70s = in their 60s. All grey.
Simple as that.

Gettin' tired. not sure if I know whaddamean meself....
Actually this is, thou, an interesting discussion..
Well worth an own thread...

But fans of a group tend to be 5-10 years younger,
the hard core, thats my theory... First wave...
then whats happen?

But ok, I was around 23 while discovering Zepp'lin..
Perhaps that was because I was so deeply involved with
my first heavy rock love affair & worship object: Deep Purple.
Plus the glam came in-between.

..................But this was what I meant before
(tryin' type a f t e r I have done some thinkin'):
why didnt all those people born in ab 1945-50-55 like Police back in 1980?

Let us not argue about that. However...I still don´t see what´s tasteless with the sudden Police-wave. Let the people listen to what they want, despite their age.

Let me interject by asking if either of you ever saw the Police live? I did, and I was thoroughly impressed. The sound was immaculate -- the existing boots really don't do it justice. To this day, I believe it was the best-mixed show I ever attended.

This being said, I think that the sound will be extraordinary in the reunion tour. Sting once described the Police songs as "muscular", and that IS how it comes across.

To put it another way, the sound of Sting's bass and Stewart's drumming make these two a rhythm section as good as any I've ever heard. That's no exaggeration.

Their peak occured a little to early for me;
no, didnt see'em.
Guess they're up there with Bill&Charlie and
Sly&Robbie, respectively.

Baboon Bro, have you not checked out some of the boots Munichhilton posted? The best, IMHO, is the incomplete show from Houston 1982. Great sound, tape at correct speed. Check it out.

The Police appeared with all the Punk bands. Just like Tom Petty and some of the Stiff acts they were lumped in with Punks for a long time just for that reason. The Police were not stupid. They knew whast was going on; they all dyed their hair blond and just kind of whooshed through the door with all the punks like that. At first "Roxanne" could be taken either way: as a very commercial punksong, or a popsong that the punks could also dig.
Then they became that popband with the "zipety doo doo". Another mega factor in Police success was that they were also in the right place @ right time for the MTV beginning. Their looks and fun videos were great vehicles.
Top it off they had credibility with the musician snobs too, becasue Stewart instantly became the new guru with the reggae stylings, Andy was in line with the Edge for the 80's f/x guitar sound and Sting has always been a topnotch Bassist.

A second Paris concert is scheduled on September, 30. Tough for The Stones.

I do not understand that a band, who has no new album or new song in more than 20 years perfrom in the biggest stadiums and arenas around the world.

The Police is for me mainly Sting and Sting performs also in his solo concerts (in concert arenas from 3000 to 10000), the biggest Police Hits. The big success of The Police reunion tour is for me hard to believe.

What's the matter, I'll go also to a concert of The Police in September, because I've bought a ticket for less than the half price on ebay.
