Sounds kinda messy; Paul's singing it's always great, but I doubt this tune will stand the test of time... definitely a step backwards, if compared to the excellent output of "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard". Who likes early '80es Paul will dig it, though.

I like it somewhat, it sounds like a song from Mccartney II

Exactly, good ol' lazy sobber! Young Boy, Hope Of Deliverance(!), Press, Say say say, Ebony and Ivory, With A Little Luck, Silly Love Songs, Listen to What The Man Said, Uncle Albert. Pity that those are the songs people are most likely to here. And that's why it's a bore to listen to Macca's greatest hits things. I'd rather do Sometimes, Wine Dark Open Sea, That Day Is Done, Not Such A Bad Ass, No Values, The Pound Is Sinking, Too You, London Town, Beware My Love, San Ferry Ann, Call Me BAck Again, Get On The Right Thing, Too Many People etc .Than those sometimes hopeless singles, man, I tell ya. Still, From A Lover To A Friend, The World Tonight, No More Lonely Nights, Coming Up and Band On The Run are good though, it must be said. All the best ,Anderson.

That's what I meant. His new stuff is so bad that it makes you long for average stuff like "Off The Ground". I didn't mean Off The Ground was good I meant it was good by comparison.

One of his best solo? Please! I could have written "Fine Line". The melody is so simple it belongs on a seseme street episode with Cookie Monster doing lead vocals.

OK, Fine Line, anyone who knows two chords could write that song. Nearly. What, I suppose he/she means is that, the rest of that album is not a bad album at all, quite reasonable actually. With reference to the mails about lousy first singles, mate.

I listened to the whole album (Chaos..). Is there any song on it that is even as good as "Pipes Of Peace" or his other early eightees stuff? There is nothing that even has a twinge of greatness.

If you like it feel free to enjoy it but imo he has really gone downhill as a songwriter.

Not as poppy, but Friens to Go and Riding to Vanity Fair is as good as pipes of peace if you're not looking for a hit. Besides, the 50% of his 1997 album is way better than the pipes of peace album as a whole. Pity he's lost his voice though, I agree with that, if that'd issue'd ever come up...

I wasn't impressed. Melody wise it sounds like a bad Billy Joel outtake. Of course, I thought he had lost "it" completely after the dreadful "Freedom" song and the equally mediocre "Driving Rain" record (one of his worst). and then he surprised me w/"Chaos and Creation" - his best record since the 1970's. Maybe one of his 3 best solo records ever.

That album owed much thanks to his using the brilliant Nigel Goodrich as producer. Looks like this time he has enlisted David Kahne (sp?) again, who I believe produced "Driving Rain" and just doesn't seem to have a clue sonically as to what to do with Paul. Nigel was able to (for the first time since Flowers in the Dirt) give him a respectably 'modern' sound but still leave plenty of room for the more classic sounding Beatles/Wings/Ram-solo-era McCartney that those of us who do actually like him love so much.

If this song is any indication of what his new record will sound like, I am thoroughly unimpressed. He should have ended his recording career on a high note with the last one and spent the rest of his days touring and releasing live or greatest hits records.

Pipes was awful, his worst. Chaos does have some fluff, but overall it isn't bad, and definately not as bad as Pipes of Peace.

Why is this an issue? Do you honestly believe a song has to be rhythmically complex in order to be good?

Some great Stones' songs have simple melodies (Connection, Satisfaction, Dance Little Sister), yet I don't see you dismissing them as "simple".

And what about Chuck Berry? His songs were pretty simplistic, but they are some of the best rock songs.

A least Macca hasn't wrote something as bad as "Emotional Rescue" or "War Baby".

By the way, please listen to his albums in FULL before judging him, thanks. I have a strong suspicion that people are juding without hearing those records...

The fact that Macca is a nonstop topic here shows how important he is rated by people here. All those knocking him down - well, this can be explained psychologically - are of the jealous kind: They secretly admire his output and that he really made it big as a solo artist, something (if we are honest) Mick or Keith could have never achieved. Goddess In The Doorway, well.

Amen!
I just stopped commenting on the outlandish statements here...McCartney has a fantastic collection of work...his last four disc have been outstanding, some of his best work since The Beatles...
And regarding Chaos...yes several of the tunes are definitely up to his classic standards...Riding to Vanity Fair is one of his best songs period, haunting and caustic with a beautiful melody. He is clearly pissed at someone???

Slightly OT, but here is a great video on youtube from the '04 summer tour:

One of my favourite ever Beatles songs done live.

Also, there is some footage around on youtube of backstage stuff at macca's video shoot for the new single, plus what seems like rehearsal / test footage for a website for the new album.

Wow, some touchy touchy Macca fans here. Why is it that people can criticize ABB on a Stones site but to criticize Macca's recent ouput is heresy? One poster mentioned Jealousy as the motive for the criticism? Did you ever think that maybe his newer stuff just isn't that good.

Another poster mentioned Fine Line in the same context as Satisfaction and Chuck Berry songs. Get a grip. Chuck Berry could fart a better song in his sleep. If you want to listen to his stuff fine, but songs like Fine Line and Freedom are far inferior to his earlier works.

I'm not a Macca hater. I just hate his new stuff because it is so beneath him. I wish the guy would finally release something worthy of his reputation.

As far as his recent ouput goes he also hasn't written anything half as interesting as Saint Of Me, Biggest Mistake, Too Tight etc.

And I'll take ER any day of the week over Say Say Say.

Frank,
That's your opinion...
For me most of Flamming Pie was fantastic. Driving Rain had some great tunes...check out Back in the Sunshine Again, a fantastic track. And most of Chaos as well. Riding in Vanity Fair is a fantastic personal cut.
I am not saying who is better, but just saying your opinions on his recent output are based on your tastes....
And oh yeah, Run Devil Run is freaking amazing! All covers and all of them rock!

I wouldn't! Maybe Say Say Say is very 80's-like, but it has a great groove and it doesn't sound like someone who had his balls cut off.

And I guess you haven't heard his latest records. Biggest Mistake and Too Tight stinks. Saint Of Me are top-Stones and it is as good as the late Macca -no question.

1.- Chaos And Creation In The Backyard isn't as good as A Bigger Bang. That's for sure.

2.- Too Tight doesn't stink. It rocks.

3.- Emotional Rescue might be a bad song, but I'd take that one over frickin' Coming Up any day of the week....

I heard enough of his latest records to know they are total bores. ABB demolishes Chaos and so does VL and BTB for that matter.

Neither The Stones nor Macca are as good as they were in their heydey but the difference is The Stones still show flashes of brilliance where Macca does not. Freedom? Sounds like a Britney Spears type melody.

Chaos... way better than Bridges... Period!

Freedom, Britney Spears. Well what do you call Keys To Your Love then? All Saints-cover?

Chaos is a total bore and way beneath Macca's talent level. Not even close to BTB.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Keys... was a bad song but was one of four songs that were created with the sole purpose of adding some new stuff to forty licks. Freedom on the other hand is Macca's highest profile song over the last ten years.
