Townshend: The Who are unlike The Beatles & Rolling Stones
Pete Townshend says that his and Roger Daltrey's differing views on the Who help keep the band alive. Townshend explained the difference between the two to voa.com, saying that, "(Roger) carries his view of the Who as a brand name with him, and he is more of a fan than I am. I act as an insider, and see the band as being almost like an art installation, not like the Beatles, not like the Rolling Stones, not like Genesis, not like (the) Police, not like Bruce Springsteen. I see the Who as having a function, which is entirely expressed through its audience."

During his recent keynote address at this year's South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Townshend spoke about the artistic responsibilities he feels that rock music needs to undertake: "A great rock song, and the way I define it, must speak for those who listen to it -- not for those who play it. If you hear a great rock song... If I hear a great early, early, early Elvis (Presley) song, like 'That's All Right Mama,' it's what I feel that counts. Not what he intended, not what Arthur Crudup intended when he wrote the song."

The Who are currently on a break before kicking off their final European leg on May 16th in Lisbon, Portugal. Although the band was contemplating another swing through the States in the fall, Townshend has said that he and Daltrey have chosen to end the tour after wrapping up the overseas dates.

SO sick of Townsend...

Isn't he the guy who inducted the Rolling Stones into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and told them..."Don't Grow Old Gracefully..it wouldn't suit you"...then in the last couple of years...every chance he gets he slags the Stones for being on the road...saying they should hang it up...then proceeds to go out with Roger Daltry calling themselves the WHO when they only have two original guys and a major part of the WHO was the contributions of the monster talents of Keith Moon and John Entwhistle.

Could you imagine Mick hitting the road without either Richards or Watts and calling it The Rolling Stones...paleezeeee.

I can't figure this guy out.

I find the who and the beatles are excellent music, with words put in the make it a song (not all of their songs, but many). But, the stones songs tell a story and a belief, kinda like Bob Dylan. So, that is one of the reasons why they are my fav- rock and roll with lyrics I can relate to or enjoy.

Just the opposite of what Pete is talking about. By the way, I do love the Who, I have seen them 6 or 7 times. (But I have seen the Stones 3 or 4 times that amount)

Will see the Who on June 9 (for the first time in my life), just four days before I 'll see the Stones (for the 62nd time).

I think Pete thinks a bit too much about music. He feels like he has to try and explain his thoughts... I dunno... Rock 'n' Roll is a very basic simple form of art, yet he seems to try and dress it up or elevate it to some other status...?

What's that line from Goodfellas? "Shutup you're always talking..."

If you want to meet The Who for free:

Meet The Who in Helsinki (for free)
Today The Who, in conjunction with fan management company UltraStar, launched the "Who Are You?" flyaway contest. Over the next two months (contest ends June 15), fans of The Who are encouraged to upload one photo, photo collage or personally created piece of art onto the contest site to theme of "Who Are You?" After reviewing all the entries that are uploaded to TheWhoTour.com, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will personally pick the grand prize winner. Any fan of The Who can enter this contest, membership to the fan club is not necessary.

The grand prize winner (and a guest) will get front row tickets to The Who's concert in Helsinki, Finland on July 9th, and a personal meeting with Roger and Pete. The grand prize also includes round-trip airfare to Helsinki, and three nights hotel stay.

The winning submission will be showcased on TheWhoTour.com, and a slideshow of all the entries will also be shown on the site.

There should be a rule in rock n roll: If you go out on a "farewell" tour, break up the band, then later get back together and do a "reunion" tour, then you are officially a fvckass, and forfeit the right to criticize a band like the Stones who have never milked the "breakup" card and managed to keep it together all these years. Yes, Pete, this includes you and Sting and all the other lightweights who aren't worthy of wiping up Keith's sputum.

The predictable quota of well-informed, balanced, thoughtful and intelligent responses to something bearing Townshend/The Who's name never ceases to amaze me.

The Police never did a farewell tour. And they never officially broke up.

Well, then, Sting SHOULD be allowed to wipe up Keith's sputum!

He may be a genius, but that doesn't mean he's not a twit.
