Well here at IORR for instance it would be a
topic/discussion that is not generally associated with the Rolling Stones..

I was thinking the same thing as I was perusing this thread. I don't think the charts have ever been indicative of what quality music is out there.

I'm starting to wonder if Louis XIV is going to be a flash in the pan. I think they are hilarious. In a brilliant way.
I would add The Feeling, Kooks, Razorlight. And the Stereophonics. I know they are not new, but seems they are unknown in USA which is a shame.
And one of the best bands, period, in last 10 years Supergrass.

The problem for me with modern Rock and Roll is that the guitar solo is gone from all of the "THE" bands as I like to refer to them: The Hives, The Strokes, The The The The The - it goes on and on. Mind you I rather like the Hives out of this bunch of THE bands, but overall, there is no more guitar solo in the Rock played on the radio. I think the last great, classic-rock trained band is Velvet Revolver and that is because Slash is steeped in the likes of Keef, Jimmy, and Eddie Van Halen. I don't know who today's guitarists look up to or listened to as a kid, but if it's not the guitar greats from the past, they can't possibly be expected to stick around for awhile. The guitar solo in a rock song is as important as a cup of coffee with the morning newspaper. And aside from the lack of the solo, you have a bunch of guys that are just hashing it out on what sounds like guitars that were all purchased from the same music shop. There is no differentiation anymore in the guitar 'sound' like in the past. Again, I would say Slash is the last one that exhibits this. You used to always be able to tell who was playing on a song by the 'sound' of the guitar. I can still do this with Slash. His 'sound' is the same in VR as it was in GnR, and I can only attribute it to his guitar itself. For me, I don't get that anymore out of today's music.

CrasyDadda, you are right about Black Stone Cherry. I forgot about them. They seem to be really good too. In fact you mention a lot of the newer bands I think are fairly talented. I'd love to hear some of those others, and now I have a new mission: to seek out the future of Rock!

The end of the guitar solo IMO is a good thing. It ties in with what I was saying earlier about new music not being steeped in R&B.It is music you don't really want a guitar solo over. The guitar is either notably absent now, or being used in a different manner. That I think is a healthy develop[ment.

Have to disagree with you there, ChelseaDrugstore...to me the guitar solo is what makes RnR what it is. If you think about all of the great, great songs over the years that have been written, they all have a break in the middle for a solo, and most of them stick out in one's mind for that memorable lick in the middle. But, how many of today's songs stand out like that with a memorable solo in the middle, and that memorable sound? I don't have any that come to mind.

LOL - Ryanpow - I am hearing the "That was awesome" @ end of your post in the tone of Chris Farley when he used to do the interview with McCartney. No disrespect...smiling smiley
Voodoo I was more thinking aBOut the endless guitarnoodling. The short guitarburst that is part of the 3 minute rocker is indispensable. The first one that pops to mind is "Communication Breakdown" for somereason.

MTV, the 80's, rap, and downloadable singles for 99 cents (emphasizing one-off hits rather than albums) have effectively killed rock & roll as we know it.

Seeing a good live band performance and selling a huge amount of albums now seem mutually exclusive. There will always be someone carrying the torch...but I don't see them ever getting huge, that now seems left to the popsters.

If you have the chance to see the Arctic Monkeys: go take a look.
They reminded me of the young stones in some way plus the music is pretty good too.

I saw the Raconteurs, White Stripes and The Black Keys live. The Raconteurs were the opening act for Bob Dylan and were very intense. The guitar work and the solos were much better than the White Stripes. Would highly recommend the Black keys also, they know their history of the blues.
I agree that Rock n Roll today is missing the guitar solo. I think that is what made the music of the 60's and 70's so ever present today. I couldn't agree more with the comment about no soul in music today. The corporations are too involved now and they artists aren't that creative. The Stones and Zeppelin explored other countries cultures, took music from their experiences and incorporated them into there music. Wolfmother seems to be pretty good. Anyone see them live? Can't get into the Artic Monkeys though. I don't think anyone can eclipse the music of the past. Name a band since 1980 that is in the league of the Beatles,Stones,Zeppelin,The Doors,The Who,Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. I can think of a couple, Guns and Roses and the Black Crowes, saw them live many times but I think they understood what music mean't back then. Were talking twenty seven years and I can come up with two. Maybe I missed a few. Add some if you like.

Marc Ford and Rich Robinson are two amazing guitarists that really show who their inspirations were/are....unfortunately Marc Ford has left the Crowes again, too many tempting substances for him on the road. :-(

not only are the guitar solos gone as well as musical passages but the annoying nonstop singing (whining). if you print the lyrics to a song on paper they say not much but would fill three notebook pages, gimme shelter has about three sentances and four choruses and says a helluva lot with great passages and solos

It's called Brianstorm - and that is not a misprint.

CrazyD - I checked out the Cobras "She's busting bricks now..." I like it a lot. I want to try to get a disc if they got one out.
I love that kind of voice. (It's a guy right?) except for Jagger and Gregg Allman, I don't like gruff voices. Always dug Lennon, Jeff Buckley and Todd Rundgren (just as a singer).
Worst guy is the guy from Foo Fighters who screams like a monkey.
