Almost Hear You Sigh - Steel Wheels

How much did Steve Jordan contribute to Almost Hear You Sigh - was it more of a Keith lyric or Mick .

I'd say its more of a Keith lyric. The erarly outtake is a little different to the final version, but the fact that it appears to be very much a Keith tune at that stage would suggest to me that he was more involved then Jagger.

there are a couple of very early demos of Almost Hear You Sigh from the 1987 Winos sessions -
they include vocals but more sounds than lyrics, so i guess Steve Jordan's contribution was to the music.
the lyric Keith's singing on that early Steel Wheels demo is a totally different concept
than the released version - it's an "i've got to make you mine" song, not a "you're gone" song,
so maybe Mick revamped Keith's original idea? or maybe Keith revamped it himself.

two of keith's greatest vocal performances on cant be seen and slipping away.
in fact besides continental drift the best three songs on the record are keith's
songs almost hear you sigh, cant be seen, and slipping away IMO.

Oe of my top 5 all-time favorite Stones songs. Keith called it "Cousin Of Beast Of Burden".

"No Anchovies, Please"

with sssoul,

thanks - do you think keith has trouble some times coming up with more lyrics in his songs or is it his style to leave the lyric hanging without that great bridge to his songs, sometimes i wonder if he gets stuck and cant finish the lyric.

what do *i* think?
i think anyone who writes songs sometimes has trouble completing lyrics, and sometimes they write themselves,
and sometimes the great joy of having a collaborator is that they come up with something fine
right at the moment you're stuck. i'm sure both the Glimmer Twins do that for each other,
both musically and lyrically, and that we really know less than we sometimes imagine about how their songwriting works.

yes its nice to have jagger around but how much input do you think jagger has in keith's lyrics.

>> how much input do you think Jagger has in Keith's lyrics <<

in which of Keith's lyrics?
from what they've said themselves, he sometimes has no input at all, sometimes contributes a bit,
and sometimes rewrites them extensively. the same is probably true of Keith's input on Jagger's lyrics.

Very beautiful song indeed. I love it. Out of the latter day ballads I prefer the VL ballads though.

Jagger certainly adds a lot of emotion to the song. Heared it live once in 1990 in Basel Sitzerland.

Sevral times have I heard this, where Keith has started his lyric on a song in progress; and then Jagger kind of finishes it up. Pol;ishes it up and maybe makes "more sense" of the lyrics to form a little story or so. Jagger might need this. Just like in that picture of Nellcote where you see the twins at the table: Keith playing guitar and obviously singing, and Jagger in a cardigan with a notebook on the table.
Even in practically finished songs like Gimme Shelter, Love is Strong do I hear a huge difference when Keith sings it. Or maybe it is the interpretation of the same words. At times it is just the timbre of the voice. When I hear Keith and Jagger sing the identical words it will ring very differently with me. I will get a whole other image out of it. Keith did "Love is Strong". And yes, the mix was a little different, the Bass bopped more, but immediately I was listening to another song.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Almost Hear You Sigh is my favorite from SW, much better than Mixed Emotions, which was included to 40 licks

The only album I don"t like is Steel Wheels. Except Slippin' Away. They don't sound as the Rolling Stones!

Excuse and thanks: haven`t heard of that "singingfool.com" before. Keef looks like a classic guitarist with his playing position within AHYS, don`t you think it`s pretty cool..! LOL

i imagine you're talking about songs Keith writes for Mick to sing? that's pretty easy to picture, yeah -
although there are also songs (like Ruby Tuesday) where Mick disavows having anything to do with the lyrics.

i wonder which songs Mick wrote the music for and Keith wrote the words.
i wonder if the bits you see Keith singing along with (not into the mic - just to himself) are parts he wrote.
i wonder why this fascinates us so when it truly seems like they don't see any point at all in sorting out who wrote what.

After hearing the SW Monitor Mixes - thank GOD Mick wrote new words and sung it.

SW isn't my fave, but I do like Terrifying and AHYS.

I was surprised to learn that Beast of Burden was pretty much all Keith. (not as surprised that Brown Sugar was ALL Mick, mind you).

Mick tidied up some of the lyrics on this one. Think I read that the "feel your tongue on mine/silky smooth like wine" bit was his, but generally the bulk of the lyrics are Keith's

One of the Stones' greatest ever ballads, and one which is unjustly underrated. Had they written it two decades earlier, it would have been as lauded as "Wild Horses" is.

In hindsight I think Steel Wheels on a whole stands up well against anything the Stones have done in the Studio over the last 20 or 25 years.

Almost Hear You Sigh" is a great song IMHO.

Love hearing Keith's version on the SW outtakes.

Very true 1cdog. Steel Wheels does hold up well. In hindsight. On Sw it has never been the songwriting that was the weak point. It was production, delivery, mastering. Take all, those songs ( except Blinded by Love winking smiley) and give them the "rough" treatment. Guitars, piano and sax. Less tracks...and that's a good Stones album.
