My favorite song is Sympathy for the devil... Please Mick, don't forget it!

I posit that winking smiley

anyway, ONE quintessential S.T.O.N.E.S. for me is midnight rambler, you can see that in 40 years of live versions

but Tumbling dice is another stones trademark as JJF BS and SMU are the "riffmasters"

and Paint it black is the definitive "ringStone"

Brown Sugar.
This song has everything.
The band sounds dangerous - bluesy rock riffs, drugs and girls lyrics.
Jagger swagger and perfect Keith background vocals.

I don't listen to many live versions of it anymore but the studio version never, ever bores me.

Brown Sugar. It's always been my favourite.

Jumpin' Jack Flash is not only my quintessential Stones song - it's my quintessential song, period.

Gimme Shelter

I'm really quite surprised that Gimme Shelter is showing up so often in this thread. I love the tune as well, but I have to wonder now why GS doesn't show up more often in the setlists.

Tumbling Dice: No riffing necessary. Just pure Stones magic.

Have grown with JJF and will die with it.

"Gimme Shelter" is probably the masterpiece, but it seems so unique as not to be really "quintessential."

"Jumpin' Jack Flash" is probably the greatest out-and-out rocker an certainly sums up the tough, defiant attitiude...

but "Honky Tonk Women" has the sex and the humor. And it has that gloriously slow, lazy, Stonesy feel. No one else can rock that hard at anything like that tempo.

My vote says "Honky Tonk Women" is the quintessential Stones track.

I`d give my vote to Street Fighting Man. Always loved the original studio version, The Stripped version is not bad either.

I remember Keef in an interwiew (can`t recall when this happened) compairing their songs as their "babies", but if he had to decide the best one, he`d say it`s SFM

Brown Sugar. The ultimate song with raw, bluesy riffs, perfect sax solo and controversial lyrics. It's all about sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Oh Yeah!!!

This one is easy for me: the studio version of "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man"......I'm a big fan of it....I could listen to it for hours!

That's why they still play all of them: Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different songs. Warhorses at least.
