Stu plays quite a lot of the keyboards on all the albums 'til Satanic. His style is quite distinctive from Nitzsche's - who is clearly the 'trained' musician, and who developed a very flexible style with Spector - compare Jack on 'Ride On Baby' (or 'Who's Been Sleeping...') to his playing on numerous Spector productions. Stu's impeccable sense of swing was rooted in Ammons, Pete Johnson, Amos Milburn, etc (i.e. Down The Road Apiece), so he's a perfect fit (or Stone) with CW/BW, but he adapted well to songs like 'My Obsession' & 'Complicated'...Nitzsche's got a more 'orchestral' sense, as befits the auteur of so many soundtracks, and is a master of mood (Sister Morphine comes to mind, but also Mothers Little Helper and countless others). Actually RT doesn't sound OBVIOUSLY like Jack, and I have no way of knowing who it is, but supposedly Nicky Hopkins was at some BTB sessions and if he's anywhere on that album that's the only cut that I can imagine might be his.

Photos of a session where Brian is seen playing recorder, also show Jack at a keyboard of some kind. From the released recordings that could mean either Ruby Tuesday or All Sold Out.

I don't think Nicky came in till after these November sessions, despite the rumours. I believe he came on the scene following the completion of Brian's soundtrack in early 1967.

The earliest photograph I have of Nicky with the stones is at a satanic majesties session.

Reading the excellent Mama Cass biog, ' Dream A Little Dream Of Me',
by Eddi Fiegel, and apparently, Jimmy Miller took her to Olympic Studios,
to sit in on the recording of 'Ruby Tuesday'.

Hmmm, doesn't make much sense considering Mick Jagger didn't contact Jimmy Miller till late 67 - early 68.

her London drugs bust was in Oct 67, and they met sometime later,
at a party to celebrate her aquittal, so it's feasible, no?

it happens, Adrian-L! so which bit is wrong - the date of her bust?
if it could have been october 66, not october 67, we can still make this work!

her London drugs bust was definitely Oct '67 - so clearly an error.
Maybe she was at the session, a year earlier,
as she was close to both Brian and Mick?

Or maybe it's the Jimmy Miller part that's wrong. Bill does mention in Stone Alone that the Late 66 Olympic Studio sessions were frequented by famous peeps.

Or(part III) ehehe, maybe it's totally true, but the boys have simply forgotten about such a meeting.

What about Brian on LIVE Ruby Tuesday? I assumed he played recorder. But right now there is a photo of Brian playing piano from the 67 tour. Only songs it could be is LSTNT or RT. Anyone know which one it is?

Yeah exactly. According to many fans he didnt. He just beat women up. About LLR. I know Dixon wrote it, Brian played it different.

it's called revisionism of history.
The band and ,many fans have been doing it for years.
- many seem hell-bent (for whatever reason)
on denying Jones his rightful place at the forefront of
60's music culture.
For many the band started in 72-73.. not 62-63.

Brian played Vox organ on LSTNT and recorder on Ruby Tuesday during the 67 tour. I don't think anyone is denying he played recorder on the studio version, don't be so over dramatic!

Show me one FIRM case of revinsionsim regarding what Brian has played as stated by members of the band, but then retracted at a later date or vice versa?

There is firm proof Brian played sitar on Paint it' Black as it's been said by about everyone who was present at the sessions.

>> "playing the recorder"? <<

a recorder is (sort of) flute-like instrument. Brian plays one on Ruby Tuesday.

Ok, thanks.
I wasn't aware of the name for THAT instrument.

there's a guy named John Moore who wrote a very interesting thread in alt rock-n-roll.stones named "who played what"

Here's an excerpt:
RUBY TUESDAY (Jagger, Richard)*
Rec: Nov. 9 - 26, 1966.
Rel: Jan. 13, 1967 (UK B-Side)
M. Jagger: Lead and Backing Vocals.
K. Richard: 12 String Acoustic Guitars, Harmony Vocals, "Double
Bass"**.
B. Jones: Piano*** and Recorder.
B. Wyman: Bass, Double Bass**.
C. Watts: Drums, Tambourine.****
Jack Nitszche: Piano*****.
*Actually written by Jones (music) and Richard (lyrics). The working
title of the track was "Title 8".
**Wyman fretted the double bass, Keith bowed the notes.
***Keith pretended to play this piano when the Stones mimed it on the
Ed Sullivan Show, Sunday Night at the London Palladium and Top Of The
Pops during January 1967. On Sullivan, Brian joined in with the live
chorus vocals, but is inaudible. The piano part was transposed to
electric guitar when the Stones performed this song live in Europe in
Spring '67.
****An instrumental version of this song exists on bootleg. A count in
is audible on the master tape just prior to the instrumental coda.
*****There seems, perhaps, maybe, possibly etc., to be a second, more
'honky-tonk' piano on the chorus. This is Nitzsche, as it's generally
held that Brian played the main verse piano, but Nitszche has a credit
for piano on the session too.

The same source as I used in Brian/Jagger harmonica thread says the following:

Let's Spend the Night Together (Brian on organ and Nitzsche on piano)
Ruby Tuesday (Brian on piano and flute)

who knows...really?

In a sense it is a revision of history, as it's needed. Since his death Brian is myhologized, and all things good are credited to his name. Over the years he has become "the genius of the Stones", who single handedly played all instruments and wrote all songs. I think this vision needs correction as it's factually wrong.

Well it is most definitely NOT a flute and is most definitely a recorder, that I do know.
