I am going to Frankfurt, Paris and London. I don't know how Little Queenie finds Europe shows cheaper than seeing them in the US -- she must be a magician.

Hotels in Paris on that weekend of June 16 are very expensive; looks like I won't be staying at the Four Seasons at 730 Euro/night! And the rooms in Europe are too small to accommodate a family of 4, so when I take my family, I need 2 rooms.

LOL - well, if i had more time, i'd line up the expenses to see 4 consecutive shows on each continent, including hotels and transport.

one thing is that in the US - i usually travel back and forth between chicago and one or two stones shows - so that's not as efficient as in europe.

however, the general admission shows are much cheaper, especially in the central and eastern european countries. although airfare from the US to europe is expensive, the concert ticket price difference evens it out.

hotels can vary both in both continents, of course. my hotel outside of louisville was $50 but my hotel in LA was $90 (still cheap, relatively). so far in europe, the range i'm spending is about the same.

and drbryant, i know you like having good seats and both frankfurt and london are seated right? that's the US format taking over, unfortunately. it looks like i'll face it in rome, unfortunately...

too bad i won't see you this summer!

Ah thanks Rockman! Sorry I've been MIA lately, I've been a little out of commission. Right now I have no plans for Europe this year, although I'm willing to let Erik entice me with his best work. ;-)

In a word -- persistence. Last year, in February it "only" took 2 two-hour phone calls with Delta to get my flight for July 19.

This year, I was dealing with a much shorter time frame on both ends due to going in June (first trip) and Sir Mick's announcing the tour in late March.

In the last week and a half or so, I think I have spent 10-15 hours over the course of 5 or 6 calls to Delta reps. I did pretty well my first call about a day or two after the tour announcement, but the fine tuning and changes that I made about my schedule (after being majorly corrupted by Beast into seeing several more shows) made it really drag out.

They always say they can't do this route or that day does not work. I incrementally got a change here and a change there that I wanted, thereby extending the 48 hour hold period before I had to book. This happpened several times and I just kept calling back and was able to get more changes.

Finally, yesterday, I said this is enough and I really did need to book as it expired last eve. So, after 3 hours and 20 minutes of continuous talking and (more) waiting, I booked. I did have to use a half Skysaver option, so it's 125,000 miles for 2 flights (had to buy 2K miles). They were going to have me on full Skysaver for one of the flights, I said no, made them go back and keep looking til they did come up with something that worked.

Anyway, I'm not even telling you all the hassle, enough. But again, persistence. I stil am going to call back and try to make two more changes and pay $50 for it, but so what.

Keep after it, and you should pretty much get what you want. Or at least, get what you need (NML - not many laughs, but it is true).

Oh, and, did that answer your question?

Rubbish. US tickets are quite a bit more expensive than European, having been to both on this tour and now again to Europe.

And my family of four managed to fit in one room most of the time on a 5 week European trip last summer.

And, you can find cheap places. And there are always hostels unless that bothers you. Consult the Rick Steves books and DVDs. The man is god, next to Gazza of course.

We've booked 7 people near (2km) the SDF, and near the subwaystation to the city centre, 2 nights for a TOTAL amount of 300 euro's (E43 each), breakfast excluded, but we'll find a nice terrace for that. They've got clean beds and showers: what else do you need? Last year we stayed at campanile paris nord saint denis, along the Seine: same story but only 4 people so no family-advatages. pp/n costs are around 30 if you search a little bit. And that's regular big chain-hotels/motels, so no shabby places. Just sober.

If your in Paris you can actually do a guided day trip to the Normandy beaches. Point Du Hoc and at least 1 beach. I have done this before. A van has picked me up around 6:30 AM and you return to Paris around 8:00 AM.

I hope to do a Stones london show or two in August.

Drbryant, with all due respect you're TOTALLY off on this one. You can get a GREAT clean, quiet, Paris hotel room for under 100 Euro's a night - check out [www.ruecler.com] for one great hotel in one of the best ARRONDISSEMENTS (DISTRICTS) in Paris the 7th - the most expensive real estate in the city. Another FANTASTIC hotel is HOTEL DU CHAMP DE MARS on 5,Rue du Champ de Mars. Double rooms in this super clean, quiet, charming hotel go for about 90 Euro's a night. Check them out on [www.tripadvisor.com] or their own website ( [www.hotelduchampdemars.com] ). Across the street is Cafe Du Marche with great French food at a very good price. The neighborhood is super clean and charming with a close by metro station and the Eiffel Tower is a 10 minute walk.Rue Cler is a totally charming daily market street full of locals shopping and no cars. Get Rick Steves travel books on Paris/France/Europe to see how cheap but very nice, clean, comfortable travel is done - Lonely Planet for people that want better than Lonely Planet. Steves finds ALL THE GREAT DEALS - Hotels and other wise.... [www.ricksteves.com] Best advice of the year, I sh*t you not......BTW, LUNA AND SIMONE HOTEL get a great rating for London and is only about $135 per room, per night. That's a GREAT price for a 2 or 3 star in London - check out trip advisor.

I stayed in a very nice Best Western last time in Paris for $80 a night. If you go non-centra Paris, but right on the Metro line (underground), it is easy transport anywhere.

Yes, but I have an intense interest in D Day, so I am hiring out a private American historian who lives half the year in Normandy. We are going out for 3 days, all-day tours. He has been doing this since 83 or 84. Not cheap, but he is not merely a guide, but an historian/historical interpreter who has a great command of the history and its details. This will be in August just before the o2 shows.

Re: Are any Americans going to see the Stones in Europe this summer?

Yeah man, I'll fly from New York to London, a very popular route. Still waiting to book a flight because I'm in for the 21st and 23rd, but I'm waiting to see if the STONES add a third London show. So I'll wait a little while longer. I've heard the 2 London shows are already sold out, which isn't hard to believe, so if they are going to add a 3rd show, they should be doing that soon. Direct flights are over $900 now so at that price I'm not in a hurry to book the flight yet anyway.

No, she can just COUNT, that's all. £150 is approx $290-300 at the current exchange rate. $300 is less than $450, which as we invariably recall was the cost of the top price category tickets at a great many of the U.S. shows ?

Hello again Tim!

I was in Normandy a year ago today. You made a great choice for a side trip while in France. Pointe du Hoc is incredible. Don't fall in a bomb crater while you are there! Some of the Mulberry harbor is still there as well. You'll need all three days to take everything in. I did a three day tour last year and wished we had more time. Have fun!

Oh great you will love it! The landscape in that area of France is simply beautiful IMO. The area seems to be devoid of strip malls and the such.

Also a very nice WW II Memorial/Museum in the city of Caen.

Provided I make it to the London shows I will probably head to France for a few days myself.

The last 2 years I have been in London for the Cream 05 shows and Clapton 06 shows and both years headed over to Paris for a short vacation and also taken in the beaches of Normandy.

What was extra special for me last year and quite serendipitous (sp?):

I went into a hotel in Bayeaux to find a computer to check e mail and I stumbled onto a gathering of several British D Day veterans. I got to talking to a number of them and was there for 3 hours, listening to each of their D Day stories. 2 of them were in the first wave on Gold Beach. I plan on going down to Portsmouth and visiting them in August.

I felt really blessed and special and humbled to have been with these men who had seen "things no man should ever see", in the words of the late great Denis Hopson, a British WWII veteran who I worked with and was friends with. He saw a little action himself, having been on a ship that was bombed and sunk (not at Normandy) and having been at El Alamein.

You might want to check Greenwich, a beautiful town, 15 minutes from London by train. It is within walking distance or an underground stop from O2

Just to clarify for others, stonesrules perhaps meant to say 15 minutes from central London. Greenwich is one of the London boroughs.
