When does the bass player make a difference?
Posted by: theboys ()
Date: March 16, 2007 20:30

I was listening to Jumpin Jack Flash the other night and Bill's bass lines jumped out at me! - I was thinking just how important and what a difference the bass lines make - sometimes walkin around, sometimes just percussive and punchy, sometimes melodic in a subtle way, sometimes just leading into the next phrase - giving the song that critical drive. . . .????

What are some songs (stones or otherwise) where the bass lines make all the difference? You know, signature bass lines or styles????

How about 'Smoke On The Water' for starters?

I'm a bass player myself and for me the most important role is to "stick" the band together. To weave in between guitar and drums. At the same time the bass is a good instrument to lay the fundamental bottom. It's good to play melodic & basic, BUT without overplaying. Nothing is more disturbing than a frustrated bottom! Last but not least you can "control" the hole band with your dynamics and from time to time make a fill.

For me a great bassplayer is almost unnoticeable until you remove them from the mix.

Bill's work on the Undercover album is fresh and thoughtful (even his Yamaha keyboard tinkering).

Have you seen your mother... very good bass, both sound and playing.
When it comes to Darryl Jones I think his role in the Stones is to lay down a good solid bass, and not wander up the frets too much. The lazier the guitarists gets, the more important that some one keeps the steadiness when playing live.

The bass makes Start Me Up IMO.

I noted on my son's Playstaion guitar wizard a comment in the corner of a screen "a band needs a bar fridge before a bass player".

Just a joke, not an opinion, but I always note in our office garage band that the bass player always blames guitarist, the gutarist blames the bass player and they all blame the drummer (inside band humor).

at the last oakland show, I noticed the bass was way up in the mix. Even on SOL!

Two more great Beatles examples are 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds', and 'getting better'.

Oh yeah, and 'Penny Lane'. All three songs have fantastic melodic bass.

Holy christ, forgot 'Come Together'...! Damn the Beatles had a great bass player! What was his name again...? smiling smiley

Exactly Mr Jimmy...was it Pete Best? - lol

Another great one was BABY YOU'RE A RICH MAN. Macca did things with the Bass that no one else was doing, he really put it out front... a non Beatles song that has always stood out was THE REAL ME by the Who, total bass and drums song....

Good choices, Helter Skelter. Of course, I'm somewhat biased towards the bass, for obvious reasons.

As far as Macca is concerned, on "Rain" the bass is practically the lead instrument. You might not like him, but his style definitely influenced my own.

Of course, thumping eighth-notes has its place, too (think AC/DC).

I remember at one the show at Wembley Arena in 2003, 09/15/03, Darryl suddenly had his bass overwhelmt the group sound . I think it was during " If you can't rock me". Everyone was stunned. Keith laughed heavily and , to much of Darryl's surprise, just added: " It's exactly how it has to be played". A great souvenir.

The bass player is the best dancer in the band and thus sets the tone for the whole live experience. Bill Wyman, please come back and bust a move for the fans.

2 good Stones examples are "Miss You" and the live "Imagination". On both "Start Me Up" and "Honky Tonk Women", Bill does a great job of laying out and coming in at the right time.

And, yeah, Entwhistle and McCartney are 2 masters.

A man was on an expedition with his native guide.
The first night out they heard the beat of war drums from a nearby warrior tribe.
The man told the guide he was afraid.
The guide said, "No need to fear as long as drums beat."
A while later the drums stopped, the guide screamed, "Now is time to fear!"
The man asked, "Why?"
The guide replied, "Bass Solo!!!"

What's the range of a five-string bass?

About 30 yards with a good arm.

Here are some standout bass lines that come to mind but not in any particular ranking order:

My Generation -The Who
Money -Pink Floyd
2000 light years -Stones
Rain -Beatles
My Sharona -The Knack
Fame -Bowie
Roadhouse Blues & L.A. Woman -Doors

Now let's have everyone rank them!
Hope these selections tickle your earbuds and create groovy sensations
