Emotional Rescue

I just re-discovered this album after many years and in particular the title track - I'd forgotten how good it is... love the saxaphone and the 'crying like a child' singing... I can't stop playing it in the car - somebody help!

Great record--one of the most underrated, imo, in the Stones canon.

Rooster, may be able to help you on this.

I like it too. We're in the minority.

It was a fun Stones party album in the day. Still brings back great memories of the summer of 1980 - swimming, drinking, smoking, chicks, etc.

The closing trio of ER, She's So Cold (often referred to as "She Was Hot" while drunk!), and All About You are lots of fun!

Sorry but She Was Hot is not on ER!
But yes, I too have a fond affection for this disc...it really brings back memories of the summer, summer romance! Love it!

Elmo---all true. However, the greatness of this record, is that it still stands up (and quite well) over 25 yrs later--pretty good music for that to be the case.

The songs ARE great--the Stones give you a little bit of everything on this one--huge part of the reason why it holds up so well--which is possibly as good a compliment as anyone can make about a record more than 25 yrs old.

A piece of crap. ER, Where the Boys Go, Summer Romance, SSC and DITH are decent, but overall their worst effort. What's worse?

Not my favourite, but i really like All About You, Emotionial Rescue, She's so Cold, Dance and Let Me Go.

Actully I have to put on Let Me Go just before I leave home every time I have an exam. Become kind of ritual to me

I love ER. I think it's a very worthy follow up to Some Girls. I have said this before. Think it's a better album than the usually more hyped Tattoo You.

What's worse?

Satanic, fer sure. Also, to me, Undercover (Dirty Work, too).

McCartney II, The Village People, Disco Duck, Convoy, etc.

I used to hate it for years, it's a personal favorite now. I play the album on regular base, at least twice a week. The whole period 1968-1986 is FANTASTIC.

I hear ya, george! I'm always surprised at how much "fans" bitch about minor stuff on here. I guess to show their "knowledge". I just really like almost all of the music of the Stones.

Yes, all those trashy so-called "fans" are bitching here about everything, they're so stupid...showing off their knowledge...hrmfff...

Not speaking of you, Erik. Your opinions always seem well-thought out and reasonable. Not true of everybody on here.

Maybe an early spring for Scandinavia!

Oh well, thanks Elmo, I just think there has been so much critisicm on IORR about other posters. I always feel like I'm the one who's being critisized...no-matter what is being discussed.
Appreciate your point of views too, Elmo.

I think with Sssoul was very right in her opinion, that Emotional Rescue is an album with no specific "direction", the songs there are not in a coherent order. It takes some time to get into Emotional Rescue. It started to make sense to me in 1995....must have been the cigarettes.

Uh, wrong. Very cool record with a distinctive vibe. I'll take it over the lately praised "Goat's Head" any single day.

Way, way better than the phony, retro grab bag of "Voodoo Lounge" or the (mostly underrated, actually) "Dirty Work."

There's a lot of pastiche all over the album. It's all our piss-taking, in other words. Pastiche is just a big word for it.

- Mick Jagger, 1980

I think people are misinterpreting Emotional Rescue. It's just a lot of fun. A humorous, tongue-in-cheek record. It's not supposed to be taken seriously.

- Mick Jagger, 1980

Hehe, I wouldn't put it like that under the oath!
I just meant that it takes several listenings before Emotional Rescue feels good, that's why there's so many negative reviews of it in music-magazines and stuff like that, while us patient fans dig it.

even i had enough sense to realize that not loving ER was pretty fruitless

Jagger says that ER is not to be taken seriously. In one way or another he has stated this about many of their albums and songs. I wonder which album by the Stones Jagger would stand fully behind; something indeed to be taken seriously.

A real gem is hidden on this album.
I am referring to the reggea ditty Send it to me. I hated it first, Especially when later they made Neighbors, which I regarded as a better version of the same song.

But lately I rediscovered Send it to me, whilst listening to it with headphones on. Now, there is some brilliant form of weaving to enjoy! Ronnie and Keith are absolutely on fire on this song. A brilliant highlight on this album.

I've just listened to it: you're absolutely right, no doubt this is a real gem. It sounds light and tiny, that's probably why it takes some time to be 'found'.

6/10 at least to me. Contains a few decent songs but also contains a crappy songs too!
