Another band called the Rolling Stones
Posted by: pgarof ()

When the Stones first formed I did read a story that there was another band called The Rolling Stones and they were bought off, does anyone else know anything about this?

Hope this doesn't sound too boring but it's something to pass the time whilst we are waiting for ......you know what.

Andy Anderson & The Rolling Stones

Andy was born in Clarksdale Mississippi in 1935
Formed a band around 1955 with Joe Tubb on gtr
Billy Covington bass & Bobby Lyon drums and called
them Andy Anderson and The Rolling Stones....

Auditioned for Delta Records in Jackson then cut
a couple of demo tracks for Sun records around 1956.
They were a popular live band around the South during the
fifties but by 1960 Anderson had moved on and formed The Dawnbreakers.......

Dang Rockman, you are all over this stuff. Anyway, that's one fine tie on Andy Anderson, no?

1 more thing: This wine is good, yes?

Yeah Andy is a rocking boy... his demo
for Sun Records called Tough Tough Tough is a fair effort...

I never cease to be amazed at the depth of your knowledge of musical history, Rockman.

I think it was on this board a couple of years ago, someone posted a pic of a band called "Rolling Stones" that looked like it could have been from the '20s-'30s. A rather funny pic by today's standards. It was six members, I believe, all in white tuxedos pointing at the drummer. Three vocalists in the center, standing in line with knees bent facing the drummer. I think the pic was autographed. The bass drum had the band name and a pic of a baby.

I saved this pic for quite a while, but seemed to have lost it. I think it is hilarious and would love to see it again.

What a precise description, Edith Grove.
I remember that pic, I might even have it on my hard drive - but I can't find it just like that.
I'm always amazed how the Rock comes up with the right pic at the right place.

I tip me hat, Rockman

I think it was Bill who found out about this other band after they had named themselves, I can't remember what they did about the legal side of it to keep their name?

Bill mentions an english band having the same name in Stone Alone.

Besides Rockman's introduction of Andy Anderson & The Rolling Stones where were two more bands in Britain called The Rolling Stones before our boys formed their group with the same name.
First one was described as "The Rolling Stones - Bright Musical Act" in a music magazine named Syncopation and Dance Band News in 1932, reprinted in the Melody Maker of Oct. 10, 1970. The first name of that group was Broadway Melody Makers.
Second band was formed in Bristol in 1957. Their three members were brothers with the surname Stone. Even they regiserted the band name "Rolling Stones" in the Commercial Register. In 1965 the Bristol Stones threatened to sue our Rolling Stones, if the latter did not change their name or pay a large sum of damages.
You can find pictures of both bands in this book: [www.abebooks.co.uk]

That's the pic I was looking for! Thank you very much!

Do you have any additional info on this band? Where they are from, etc.?

I think the Story I was referring to at the beginning of this thread was the one where Bill quotes in his book about a group who's surname is stone were called the Rolling Stones and tried to sue them. But now we know there where other group of the same name.

Perhaps they did the musical score for Reefer Madness?

I don't know anything about that, but there was another IORR thread very recently, in the last month or so, on an art rock band from the 70s that was originally named The Rolling Stones. The name of the band was Mirkwood, and beginning in 1973, their drummer, for 18 months, was none other than Nicky "Topper" Headon, later of The Clash. Mirkwood guitarists Mick Morris and Jack Castle were originally from Dover, where they formed a skiffle and blues band they called The Rolling Stones, the name they kept until 1962.

If you check the UK Companies House register you find 2 registered companies:
ROLLING STONES LIMITED (based in Essex)
ROLLING STONES TRADING LTD (whose business is wholesale pharmaceutical products).

Mr Richards would approve, I'm sure.

There was (is) also a Robert Heinlein book that originally went by the name 'The Rolling Stones', first published in 1952. It went through a phase of being published under the name 'Space Family Stone' in the 1960s and 70s but is now out again under its original name.

There is an Exile era Stones cover band in Seattle that calls themselves "The Rolling Stones".
