I guess maybe it's the semi,faux,disco-type of style of the song where Mick sounds like a parody of himself, that bugs me. The version on Love You live isn't much better.

I can understand why people don't like Fingerprint File, the same way I can understand why people dislike Too Much Blood,
even though I love em both, you have to like listening to an arrogant/ego/drunk Jagger to dig those songs....which I do.

That really hits the nail on the head---those are songs people are either going to love or hate w/o much middle ground in between. For me, I love them both, but can easily see where others would not care for them.

Really it just seems on Black And Blue that Fingerprint File,Hey Negrita, and Melody are very simialar. Thatr's why I don't like FF altough out of those three, I like Hey Negrita the best.

That's cool--except Fingerprint File is on It's Only Rock n Roll.

I love all 3 of those songs--but, like yourself, rank Hey Negrita, the highest.

that's a cool perspective Erik...i was really able to finally 'hear' and enjoy several '75 boots after you posted about listening to the gruff growl and slop mick was presenting, and enjoying it...for it's own sake, in it's own unique way...take it as it's own thing unrelated to the rest of my expectations and their catalog etc...and ended up really getting off on it.
tho i think sweetcharmed nailed it for me; with the faux-disco thing...that's probably what did it in for me...frankly, it took me years to stand 'miss you' (except for the bass line) something i should never say on this forum...
but when i listen to it next; i'm gonna imagine jags some character at a bar goin' off angry and a little pissed about alla this.

That's great to hear, I really love those shows, too.

how interesting: for me Fingerprint File's always been the highlight of IORR.
it never sounded like "faux disco" to me - it sounds like bona fide Stones funk,
and Mick's twitchy persona in it fits the sound and subject just right.

Sure, recently two Swedish terrorists (Islamists) were captured thanks to wiretapping and other methods probably. We have a huge problem with terrorists in Sweden, not my opinion, it's a fact. Sweden is not their prime target but I feel it's our responsibility to stop them if we can, and not leave the dirty job to the police in Madrid, New York, Haifa or Afghanistan. It has nothing to do with smoke or mirrors, it's a real threat.

In the lyrics for FF:

"..some little jerk in the FBI

Keepin' papers on me

Six feel high.."

I'm waiting for the big payoff line and it's:

"It gets me down."

That's it? It gets you down? I know the political activist 60's were over, but it seems pretty passive to just moan about how "down" the whole situation gets you.

In general I like FF. Got great musical textures. Nice sort of paranoid feel. However, when it was released, Nixon had already resigned a couple of months earlier and the national mood wasn't quite as dark by the time IORR came out.

But the "It gets me down" line is the weak link. It's lame.

What I first liked about Fingerprint file is that it sounded like something from a movie sountrack, which is aslo what I like about Do Do Do Do Heartbreaker. I realize my earlier posts about this song were serious, Actually more than anything, its kind of a fun song to me. Thats what I get most out of it. I didn't consider a serious side of it until later.

Never thought of the "soundtrack" analogy, but now that you say it, I can totally see that.

..........I can't beleive some of the comments.....complete bull.........FF is without a doubt one of their most undervalued/appreciated songs ever.............the dirtiest guitars...........the bass............the rapping(one of the earliest raps ever!!!!)........funk + r & b = masterpiece...........what is criminal is that they did not offer to play it during the ABB tour.........

yeah, to me its along the lines of "Shaft" or "Superfly". Its got that funkyness to it!

The studio version could be boring after a while, but the LIVE versions (USA 1975 on boots) are fantastic.I could listen to it for half an hour. Jagger is great, the bass, Charlie, the dirty guitars. The rhytm!!! This is a very good example how should integrate new styles (here funk) into their music. Classic Rolling Stones!
Later efforts with funk was not always succesful e.g. Undercover.IMO

The live versions were pretty good. When Ollie and Billy were right on. And Ron Wood on Bass.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

BTW, anyone called it the "Out Of Control" of the 70ies, without explanation.
Does anyone of you know, what he meant?

Love this song. The studio version. Crisp crunchy guitar. Funky Bass. And Mick is in fine improv form. I can't play it loud enough and it never gets boring.

Just listened to it and don't understand how anyone can dislike it. Funky as hell, raunchy guitar, that wah-wah, bass at the end, and Mick's improv.

Words that maybe more to the point nowadays than then. I dig it and I'm not backing down!

Looks like I'm going down swinging on this one. Honestly,I put FF right there in the SMU dept.of stones songs I loathe. Although I will concede the Love You Live version ain't half bad.

They don't. It's a blatant Mick song, so many Mick-Boy-Crush-Deniers (who bellow "Keeeeef... Keeeeeeeef" at shows) are going to slam anything blatantly Mick to shut out the tingle which brings so much painful shame to them.
