Great song...i wonder if people would hail it as a masterpiece if it came out today with all the NSA wiretapping going on, the lyrics are appropriate.

Good Call. its as apropriate now as it was then Nixon was in office when it was written. and today... uggggghh.

I really like the line "All secrecy and no privacy". Thats a really good obsevervation and an important distinction to make.

Nah, big difference in the terrorthreat today and the paranoid Nixon. Maybe it did some god then too I dunno but today terror is a real threat and "wiretapping" works.

Great song though.

Does anyone think there has been a President in the Post WWII era who has not taped. JFK and his brother tapped all of Martin Luther King's phones (w/o a warrant, of course). LBJ taped conversations he was having in the freakin bathroom. Nixon's taping expoloits are legandary and ultimately brought down his Presidency. Clinton circumvented the FISA courts by running his taping program out of England, which is a clever way of doing an end run around the law, though some might argue that it violates the "spirit" of the law--either way they taped the entire 8 yrs. Obviously, in this post 9/11 world and disposable cell phones things have gotten trickier, but I have no doubt Reagan taped, Carter taped. And on and on and on........

As for Fingerprint File, great tune and sort of ahead of it's time, talking about satellites etc. It's funny cause this was already out for yrs when I got into the Stones and at first, I did not really like, now it is one of my favorite tunes on the record.

Well, for starters they were taping the lovely, law abiding folks who were plotting to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge. Remember that? If you lived in NYC you might have cause it got alot of publicity. They also taped the poor fellow whose civil rights were denied during his plot to blow up Herald Square--you can visit these folks in jail because these tapes helped convict them.

I think Jagger is reall great in this song. The singing early on is tough and most excellnt. The whole endbit is totally cool IMO. Not campy or silly. I take him straight on. At the very very end he does this sniffing kind of thing, right after he does those crow kind of screams; I think twice, then he kind of grunts like ONLY Jagger grunts "allright", and the Bass gets real low down and mystefied. Right before he says "Goodnight" he sniffs; that is so cool!

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

I agree--Mick makes it cool w/o going over the top. And, as noted by Gazza earlier today, Mick Taylor plays great bass on this song.

I think the bigger question is, is this the kind of world we want to live in, where we have to spy on each other? Its messed up.

When there is a big hole in lower Manhattan and a couple of my friends are no longer here; I dunno, you tell me.........

its the fact that we HAVE to spy.

THere's not that much "sniffs" in Stones songs,
but....isn't there one in the Old Grey Whistle Test version of Dancing With Mr D?
Or was it just me who imagined it to be there?

Am I really going to be the first one to say, this song SUCKS. Really,it's awful. It sounds like a bunch of crap cut up and put together. Never really listened to the lyrics long enough to know what their about.

The lyrics are good--perhaps not enough to salvage the song for you, I don't know--you can check them out at Keno's site.

gosh i hate to admit it because i like that they were dealing with this theme lyrically very much...
but DO have to admit, something about this number...dunno what exactly...should listen again i guess...but something just turned me dead off...i didn't hugely dislike it nor reject it wholesale out of hand or anything...
it's just that it never grabbed me musically ,rhythmically...whatever...it just never seemed to grab me personally as a musical rock vehicle for some reason...
it just kinda laid right there (for me)...it didn't move and was nothing of consequence...just my own humble response or lack of same, to it...
but, again, i haven't given it a listen since it was newish...nor felt a desire to re-visit. tho i will now after all these varying discussions.
