Totally OT: More People Hate Their Jobs Than Ever Before..

At least in the USA -- as a matter of fact, the guy who conducted the poll hated doing it.

(ba-bump)

Sorry, couldn't resist -- this kind of absurdity helps keep me going.

One more -- I heard about a support group meeting for folks who fear being in crowds, but I was too afraid to go.

me too...and my wife does too. I'm a UCSB grad...she's a Duke grad. I was BSd into believing a good education would do much more than put me in debt. Here in San Diego, you need to make $157,000/year to buy the avg. home...and by average they mean a LONG commute & live in a crappy part of town.

Well, folks, I'm a tax auditor in a state that is financially strapped and has a relatively low educational level. So, what does our legislature do? They further complicate the tax laws and the out-of-state consulting firm the state hires to "modernize" our collection system decides to make the paper forms more complicated.

Bureaucracy gone wild at is finest. Yeah, my job sucks, and I get paid $25K a year to do it.

I used to work as a headhunter. Horrible job, horrible people. So I quit. I've never looked back.

Have had more jobs than Donald Duck...
So... ? At the moment I am a Special Adviser
for a huge case in the Court of Appeal for Northernmost Sweden.
I also work with a research project within my field,
History that is. Thats also local, but inland
whereas the other covers the coast.

I hate the uncertainty of my job situation.
But I swear I'd hate to be stuck as well.

Last year I got to help a state inquiry committee,
which was one of my career goals.

I use to L O V E my job... computer programmer on Wall St...Now with offshore programming in India for 5.00 an hour and SOX compliance ( because of the Enron scam ) it's just not fun anymore.

I may go into semi-retirement( new career ) next year. What a drag because I use to love my job.

The only difference with nowadays is that people have inflated opinions of themselves leading to much higher expectations. When I'm interviewing graduates for jobs, I see them thinking that they are going to go straight in to a job right at the top rather than having to put in the hard work and get there. Also, people working in "service" jobs start to think that the job is below them. This ends up (at least in the UK) where every other person has the word manager in their job title to make them feel important enough to actually do their job. Nowadays you've got to go to a minimum of director level before you can speak to anyone with any common sense.

Just my rant - sorry.

I work at a day camp over the summers and do enjoy it. However, they can't call us "camp couselors" anymore for whatever reason. Instead I'm a "recreation assistant." I guess it sounds more important but really it's the exact same job.

minus,. chatotic stressful job environment, long hours at times

have been there 13 monhts after 20 years of working alone, the change was difficult , but certainly worth it, regardless of how long i will last there. i needed the break.

I'm a CPA...i'd have to be crazy to actually "like" what i do. I have a job that doesn't do anything for anyone other than create expenses for companies. Almost nobody actually needs what I do...but the law requires it (for good reason though)...so I have a job. I do financials mid-sized companies mostly. These financials are so they can get a loan, LOC, rent an office, get a bond...etc. My firm will charge $10-40k for this...and everyone will look at 1 or 2 lines of what I prepare...all they really want to know is "are these people going to make enough money to pay me back?". Further...most accountants live up to their reputations...unfortunately.

The topic here is interesting - yes I think it is like bassplayer suggested
and some reasons are many of the working people are afraid of real dangers :
to loose their jobs in one day, get paid too low , get in debt, to loose control of their lifes - to be one of the millions of so called loosers.
we all know that real life isn' t that simple: "winner vs looser"
but society shifted to this narrow minded look to life.

The world is at war. But that sentence is wrong. The world is brought to war. Without any declaration.

cynicaly spoken: let it bleed.

Well, I use to hate my job. I was an engineer for corporate america. Threats and layoffs if you did not do exactly like they said. I only looked forward to the days off and spending all of the money I made. Though, enjoyed the friends.

Then, one day, I helped my sister at her school. She was pregnant and needed some help. I saw how the children love seeing me, and they were kind and real (atleast most of the time).

I went back and got my teaching credential 15 years ago, and have LOVED what I do every since. Having 5,6 and 7 year olds walking into the classroom warms my heart and gives me something important to do. I never thought I would love my job.

Yeah, I may not make as much money as I did. (Atleast I bought a house with my old job). I eat hamburger instead of steak. But, I love what I do. And, still make it to a few Stones concerts every go around.

I think Americans hate their jobs AND our system of limited vacation time! In Europe, they have the right idea! MANY WEEKS VACATION not a few crumby weeks! When I do get to leave my job for a vacation break, no one takes over and I come back to a mess. I am an Advertising Director and they only sales person for a visitors bureau so I do it all. I get to make my own hours, no clock to punch and I can come and go as I please, that's the ONLY good thing! It is stressful and my life revolves around deadlines so I an only take one week at a time. I tell my boss I'm a scratch ticket away from a PERMANENT VACATION( as Stevie Tyler says).

@ 6853

to answer your question, 6853: I use to think about my profession as a philospher
as well as an artist. I play guitar a bit and if it gets good, the music plays me...ahaha

@ all: in my first post in this thread here I want to add:

because there is no declaration of war, most people don' t know who the enemy is.
That leads directly to confusion.

And I love my profession, but it is not paid enough :-(

the media machines and their masters don't like to be critized -
but everybody can only serve the truth, that he or she see' s.
that is for me, too.

Most people I know from my younger years on said they don' t like
what they do but do it because of the money they need for a living.
This is a 30 year old experience.

playing in the dirt is what most of the academic philosophers should do
to get a taste of what "dirty work" means.

He, thor, i'm also a daytrader, except i work for a company. It's funny to see someone else has the same "unusual" job :-)

Just out of curiousity, and please correct me if i'm to straightforward and personal, how big do you trade and what kind of strategy do you use? If it's to personal for the iorr board i would love to discuss our job a little bit over email.

Cheers,
Wuudy
