Wyman found Roman coin in Suffolk...

The Times get ever so many letters from their readers...:

March 02, 2007

A Rolling Stone gathers a very early silver denarius
Sir, Since leaving the Rolling Stones I have developed a keen interest in archaeology and metal detecting, and have been fortunate enough to have built up a large and diverse collection of ancient coins, jewellery and artefacts, many of which are featured in my book, Bill Wyman’s Treasure Islands.

Your article “Coin arrived before Romans” (Feb 26) featured a photo of a Roman silver denarius. Fourteen years ago I found a very similar Roman coin which was recorded and identified at my local museum in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It almost exactly matches the date of the one featured in the article.

Beats the thrill of playing to a million people in Rio and shagging countless groupies every time, I'm sure.

Quite so Gazza, the most interesting part is that he still has a pad in Chelsea. Maybe he searches for coins along the Kings Road in the early hours....

Thanks. It really IS interesting with a roman coin in Britain that old. That there obviously are several coins (thanks Bill) from the same era is even more interesting. Who cares for groupies when you can dig up remainings after 2000 year old dead people in your own backyard?

What do you mean?

Well, the Romans were in Britain about 2000 years ago. So of course the coins are old, you won't find a Roman coin that is only 50 years old.

Britain was not even near to be included in the Roman empire by 146 BC my friend...

The Romans invaded Britain ca 50 years BC. Which is *about* 2000 years ago.

Whoops! Wrong, my friend.
Coins are found all over, even past nation borders.
As I recall it, the Roman Empire went on a little while longer.

Interestingly, some guitarists use an old coin as a guitar pick to get a very full on attack (Brian May for one I think). This could be an indication that Bill is preparing to rejoin his old pals.

Gazza - I think I caught you having a little fun. There can't exist any authentic coins dated BC.

How can you date a coin ## BC if you don't know when Christ is to be born?

The point here is that the coin is about 100 years older than the roman invasion. We are in other words talking about a pre-roman roman coin in Britain, which is a bit interesting.

The coin can be from the time BC, but it can't be dated as such.
